Overview

WavePad is an audio recorder and editor for working with music, voice and other recordings. It is best suited to people who need to clean up, shape or convert audio files rather than build a multitrack production. Its broad format support and batch tools make it a practical utility, but commercial users and anyone who relies on VST plugins need to choose an edition carefully.

Key features

WavePad covers routine edits such as cutting, copying, pasting and trimming, alongside compression and pitch shifting. Echo, amplification and equalization provide ways to alter the sound, while noise reduction and click-and-pop removal address common recording defects. That toolkit makes sense for podcast and radio edits, voiceovers and restoration; it is less suited to projects whose central task is arranging multiple tracks. For that, NCH's MixPad is the more relevant companion.

Support for more than 50 formats—including MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, AAC and M4A—helps when recordings come from different sources. Batch processing can apply effects or convert thousands of files in one operation, saving time on repetitive library work. Sample rates range from 6 to 192 kHz, with mono or stereo audio at 8, 16, 24 or 32 bits.

WavePad supports DirectX and VST plugins, but the Standard Edition excludes VST support and the SFX Library. That is a consequential restriction for users who depend on third-party VST tools or want the bundled sound-effects library. NCH also offers video tutorials, a help manual, FAQ, forum and technical support contact.

Pricing

The free version costs 0.00 USD per free, does not expire and includes many Master's Edition features, but is limited to non-commercial use. After installation, it enables additional Master's Edition features for a 14-day trial. It is a sensible way to keep personal projects cost-free, not a suitable license for paid work.

The Standard Edition Annual Plan costs 60.00 USD per year, billed billed annually. It includes Master's Edition features but excludes VST plugin support and the SFX Library, so it fits buyers who want ongoing professional-version features without those extras.

The Master's Edition Annual Plan costs 99.00 USD per year, billed billed annually, and includes the SFX Library and full VST support. The Master's Edition Quarterly Plan costs 16.50 USD per month, billed Billed $16.50 quarterly; it provides unlimited ongoing use of professional-version features and all upgrades. The quarterly option suits users who prefer a shorter billing commitment, while the annual plan is the lower stated yearly cost for those ready to commit. No seat limits are given for these plans.

Platforms

WavePad is available for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, with downloads also listed for iPhone, iPad and Kindle. The stated desktop requirements are Windows 7 to 11 and macOS 10.5 or above, making it an option for users who want to work across desktop and mobile devices.

Who it's for

Choose WavePad for focused recording edits, spoken-word cleanup, audio restoration or batch conversion, especially when you work with varied file formats. Its non-expiring personal-use edition lowers the barrier to trying it, and the paid editions make the commercial-use boundary clear. Look elsewhere if your workflow depends on VST plugins but the Standard Edition is your budget limit, or if multitrack arrangement is the main job.

Pros and cons

Pros: Batch processing handles effects or conversion across thousands of files, which is useful for repetitive audio-library tasks.
Pros: More than 50 supported formats and sample rates from 6 to 192 kHz cover a broad range of source material and output needs.
Pros: A free version that does not expire provides many Master's Edition features for non-commercial use.
Cons: Commercial use requires a paid edition, so the free version is not an option for business work.
Cons: Standard Edition omits both VST support and the SFX Library, limiting its appeal to users who need either.
Cons: Its recording-editing focus is not a substitute for a multitrack production workflow.

Alternatives

Audacity is worth considering if you want a free, open-source desktop audio editor without a subscription; it also lists Android and iOS among its platforms.

Pro Tools has an Intro option with up to eight audio tracks, eight instrument tracks and eight MIDI tracks, making it a candidate when those track-based limits match your needs.

PhotoDirector is another freemium option, though its stated platforms are macOS and Windows.

Ocenaudio offers a free downloadable desktop audio editor for Linux, macOS and Windows.

GoldWave may suit buyers who prefer a paid license model; its One Year GoldWave License costs 19.00 USD per year and expires one year after purchase.

Ardour is a freemium alternative for Linux, macOS and Windows users.

MixPad is the more natural choice when a project needs multitrack mixing; WavePad integrates with NCH's Multi-Track Audio Mixer.

Tenacity is a free alternative for Linux, macOS and Windows.

Verdict

WavePad is a strong fit for people who need a flexible editor for individual recordings, restoration and high-volume file conversion across desktop and mobile. Its format breadth and batch processing are the clearest reasons to choose it; the main reasons to look elsewhere are a need for multitrack production or a requirement for VST support on the less expensive Standard Edition.
