Overview

ServiceM8 is field-service software built around coordinating jobs, staff and customer transactions. Its combination of offline access, mobile payments and team tools makes it a strong fit for contractors whose crews need to manage work away from the office. The free tier offers a way to start, but its monthly job cap makes plan choice important as workloads grow.

Key features

Managers can track staff locations and job progress, communicate through messaging, and review activity feeds and timesheets. Route optimization and recurring jobs add useful support for coordinating repeat visits and daily schedules, while offline mode helps field staff continue working without a connection. Together, these tools cover a practical job workflow; businesses with larger job volumes should weigh the monthly caps against their actual workload.

A customer portal sits alongside invoicing and card payments, which can be taken on site, online or through Tap to Pay on iPhone. Connections to Xero, QuickBooks Online and MYOB can link job operations with accounting. Mailchimp, Deputy, n8n, Zapier, add-ons and a REST API broaden its integration options. Two-step authentication and a 90-day account activity log provide account safeguards. Paid plans include 24/7 chat and email support; help videos and partners are also available.

Pricing

ServiceM8 is freemium, with a 14-day trial and paid plans from $29 per month. Prices are in AUD and include GST; the homepage says there are no hidden fees or contracts. All paid plans include unlimited users, so the main listed differences are monthly job and SMS allowances. The free plan is limited to one user, 30 jobs per month and 10c per SMS, making it best for a solo operator with a small workload.

Plan	Price	Included limits	Best suited to
Free	Free	1 user, 30 jobs per month, 10c per SMS	A solo contractor with modest monthly volume
Starter	$29 per month	Unlimited users, 50 jobs per month, 100+ SMS per month	A small operation starting to coordinate a team
Growing	$79 per month	Unlimited users, 150 jobs per month, 300+ SMS per month	A team with a regular but moderate job flow
Premium	$149 per month	Unlimited users, 500 jobs per month, 1000+ SMS per month	A busier business needing substantially more monthly capacity
Premium Plus	$349 per month	Unlimited users, 1500+ jobs per month, 3000+ SMS per month	High-volume operations approaching or exceeding 1,500 jobs

The step up from Free buys more than user capacity: paid plans remove the one-user ceiling and increase job and SMS allowances, with 24/7 chat and email support also included. Starter still caps work at 50 jobs monthly, so a growing team may need to move up quickly if it regularly exceeds that volume. The published plan details do not describe other feature differences between tiers.

Platforms

ServiceM8 supports Android, iOS and macOS, with mobile apps on both major mobile platforms. The separate ServiceM8 Desktop app is available for Mac or PC. Offline mode is useful for crews working in areas with unreliable connectivity.

Who it's for

ServiceM8 is a good match for contractors who need mobile job coordination, customer payments and accounting connections in one service workflow. Its unlimited-user paid plans suit teams that need to add staff without a per-seat ceiling, while the free plan can suit a solo business staying within 30 jobs a month. It is less compelling for a business whose volume pushes beyond the entry allowances unless the higher monthly capacity justifies the price.

Pros and cons

Pros: Offline support, route optimization, recurring jobs and staff-progress tools combine field coordination with day-to-day job management.
Pros: On-site, online and iPhone Tap to Pay options give businesses several ways to collect card payments.
Pros: Paid tiers allow unlimited users, avoiding a paid-plan seat cap as the team expands.
Cons: The free tier allows only one user and 30 jobs monthly, limiting its usefulness for a team or busy solo operator.
Cons: Starter's 50-job monthly cap may be too low for businesses with steady higher volume, making a more expensive tier necessary.

ServiceMax is a paid web-based alternative for readers who prefer a web platform. Acumatica Field Service is worth considering if you need Android, iOS, web and API platforms and prefer custom pricing based on usage and deployment needs. ReachOut Suite offers a free plan with 25 jobs and limited features, so it may suit a reader whose needs fit within that smaller allowance. Zuper and Zinier are paid options with web, iOS and Android support. BigChange has plans by request that include support, CRM, scheduling, a mobile app, tracking, quotes and invoices, business intelligence and collaboration tools. ServicePower has a free plan and a web platform. IFS Cloud Field Service Management is another paid alternative.

Verdict

Choose ServiceM8 if your contracting business needs field teams to coordinate jobs, take payments and stay connected to accounting tools, especially when offline access and unlimited paid-plan users matter. Its free option lowers the barrier to entry, but the one-user, 30-job cap is restrictive, and businesses should select a paid tier by matching its monthly job allowance to their workload. Look elsewhere if those caps or the paid-plan range do not fit your operating volume.
