Overview

Jira is a work-management platform for teams that need to coordinate projects across planning, delivery and reporting. It is strongest for organizations that want configurable workflows, multiple ways to view work and room to scale; smaller teams should weigh its quotas and plan tiers against simpler alternatives.

Teams can prioritize work, divide it into assigned tasks and track progress through backlogs, boards, lists, timelines, calendars and summaries. Forms, dependencies, goals and built-in reports add coordination tools beyond task assignment, while customizable fields, workflows, permissions and APIs allow deeper configuration. That breadth is useful when work crosses teams, but it also makes Jira a more involved choice than a narrow bug tracker.

Jira Cloud is Atlassian-managed SaaS, with security, compliance, setup and SLAs built in. Data Center is self-managed for organizations with stricter regulatory or security requirements, but it is on a defined sunset path: new license sales end March 30, 2026, and the product ends March 28, 2029.

Key features

Planning and progress

Multiple views let teams choose how to inspect the same work: backlogs for prioritization, boards and lists for task tracking, and timelines or calendars for schedule visibility. Dependency management, goals, partner-request forms and reports help connect incoming requests to delivery. This flexibility suits mixed software, product, marketing and operations work; teams seeking only a lightweight issue list may not need so much configurability.

Automation and connections

Automation rules can keep statuses current, create custom routines and surface risks or trends through Rovo AI. Rovo Search, Chat and Agents are included on Standard, Premium and Enterprise, but not Free. The Free tier's 150 automation steps per subscription each month is a modest allowance for teams with frequent workflows; paid quotas scale by user. More than 3,000 Marketplace apps and integrations, including GitHub, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Figma and Miro, make Jira a strong fit where existing tools need to connect.

Security and collaboration

Jira supports customizable permissions, privacy and data-residency controls, TLS 1.2+ in transit and AES-256 encryption at rest. Premium adds IP allowlisting; SAML SSO and SCIM are available through Atlassian Guard. Standard adds user roles and permissions, plus anonymous access for people outside an organization to Jira spaces. Premium and Enterprise publish uptime SLAs of 99.9% and 99.95%, respectively; Enterprise also adds advanced encryption, Shadow IT controls, identity providers, SCIM and enforced SSO.

Pricing

Jira is freemium, with paid plans starting at $7.91/user/mo. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free forever for up to 10 users, with 2 GB storage and 150 automation steps per subscription each month. Community Support is the trade-off, and Rovo is excluded. It is a credible starting point for a small team, but the user cap and fixed automation pool can become limiting as usage grows.

Standard costs 7.91 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes a 7-day free trial. It raises storage to 250 GB, provides 400 automation steps per user per month and supports up to 100,000 users per site. Rovo is included, along with user roles and permissions and external anonymous access. This is the practical upgrade for teams needing more capacity and administration without unlimited storage.

Premium costs 14.54 USD per month, billed monthly, also with a 7-day trial. It offers unlimited storage, 750 automation steps per user monthly, Rovo and a 99.9% uptime SLA, making it the better fit when capacity and service assurance matter more than the Standard price.

Enterprise has custom pricing, annual subscriptions only, up to 150 sites and 1,000 automation steps per user each month. Its 99.95% SLA, 24/7 support and advanced security controls target larger organizations with stronger governance needs. Data Center also has custom pricing on an annual subscription; its self-managed deployment includes active/active clustering, SAML 2.0 and OpenID Connect, disaster recovery, and project and issue archiving. It serves organizations that need self-management, though its sales and end dates make it a time-bounded choice.

Standard and Premium trials require no payment information and can be canceled at any time. Monthly plans accept credit cards or PayPal; annual plans also accept bank transfer or check. Refunds are available within the first paid month for monthly plans and within 30 days of payment for annual plans.

Platforms

Jira is available on web, iOS, Android, Windows and Linux, as well as through APIs and self-hosted deployment. Its mobile app supports updates, comments, boards, backlogs, approvals, forms and project status, so mobile access covers ongoing coordination rather than just notifications.

Who it's for

Jira fits software and product teams, as well as marketing, operations and other groups managing interdependent projects. Its broad view set, integrations and configurable permissions make it especially compelling when several teams share processes or tooling. A small group with modest tracking needs may find the Free tier sufficient, but should keep its 10-user cap and monthly automation allowance in view.

Pros and cons

Pros: Six task views, dependencies, forms and reports support more than one style of project coordination.
Pros: More than 3,000 integrations and APIs make Jira adaptable to established toolchains.
Pros: Free supports 10 users, while paid tiers raise automation quotas and add Rovo and stronger service commitments.
Cons: Free is capped at 10 users, 2 GB of storage and 150 automation steps per subscription monthly.
Cons: Rovo is absent from Free, and premium service guarantees and advanced security controls require higher plans.
Cons: Data Center is self-managed but has a published end date, limiting its appeal for new long-term deployments.

Alternatives

Game Bug Tracking Software, Game Project Management Software, Project Management Software, Agile Project Management Software, IT Project Management Software and Product Management Software are category lists for comparing options in those fields.

YouTrack is worth comparing for teams that want a free plan for up to 10 users with 30 GB storage, or a lower stated Cloud price of 5.40 USD per month.

Buildtable suits a small game team that can work within its free limits of one game and two team members, with bug tracking and tasks included.

Bugzilla is a free, open-source option for teams that want a self-hosted bug tracker.

Backlog offers a free plan for up to 10 users, but limits it to one project and 100 MB of storage; that can suit a team prioritizing a small, bounded workspace.

Linear is a free alternative for teams that value unlimited members but can work within two teams and 250 issues.

Shortcut offers a free plan for up to 10 users with one workspace and 5 GB storage, an option for teams whose needs fit those boundaries.

Gemini is a paid game bug-tracking alternative with a stated Cloud price of 10.00 USD per month per user and unlimited projects and content.

Trac is a free, open-source self-hosted project software option.

Verdict

Choose Jira if your team needs configurable project planning across several work styles, broad integrations and room to grow into stronger administration and service levels. Its chief advantage is the breadth of coordination and controls in one platform; its chief reason to look elsewhere is that quotas, Rovo access and reliability commitments depend on the plan, while Data Center has a fixed end date.
