Overview

Perplexity is an AI search and research service for people who want sourced answers rather than a list of links. It suits curious readers and researchers who need to move between web results, their own files, and connected apps; its chief trade-off is that free use is constrained and serious use quickly points toward a paid tier.

Each response carries inline citations, and searches can draw on more than 20 leading models, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Nemotron. That range makes Perplexity a flexible research front end, though model access within Max applies to the Perplexity web experience, not programmatic API use.

Key features

Citations and research reports

Citations accompany every answer and show the basis for its claims, giving readers a practical route to check or pursue a result. Deep Research goes further by running dozens of searches across hundreds of sources and producing a report. That is a useful step up for substantial questions, but the free tier is positioned for simple queries, not sustained research.

Search across work

Perplexity can search the open web, uploaded files, and connected apps in one place. Pro adds Computer, premium data sources, web search, files, apps, model council, and model selection. The comparison lists more than 400 app connectors, while the connector service states that it uses encryption, continuous security monitoring, point-in-time backups, and 30-day retention.

Computer and higher limits

Personal Computer runs inside the macOS app and requires macOS 15 or later. The comparison lists 10,000 Computer credits per month; Pro adds 4,000 additional credits and Max adds 35,000 additional credits alongside that monthly amount. Max also raises Deep Research, resource-generation, and file-upload limits and allows more monthly video creation. Its priority support, dedicated infrastructure, and faster response times are aimed at people who depend on the service for ongoing work.

Pricing

Perplexity is freemium. Free costs 0.00 USD per free and offers limited daily use for individuals; free usage is also described as limited weekly use suited to simple questions. That makes it a sensible way to try occasional queries, but not a dependable allowance for regular research.

Pro costs 20.00 USD per month (billed $20 /mes). It is the practical upgrade for individual serious work, with expanded access and higher limits, the Pro feature set, and 4,000 additional Computer credits. Education Pro has custom pricing and brings Pro features to verified students and educators, plus Learn Mode, file and image uploads, and premium models.

Max costs 200.00 USD per month (billed $200 /mes). It is for high-volume individual use: higher research, generation, and upload limits, more monthly video creation, maximum Computer use, and priority support. Its advanced model access does not extend to API calls, which require separate credits.

Enterprise plans charge per seat and are available on monthly or yearly subscriptions. Enterprise Pro costs 40.00 USD per seat per month, with 400 Pro Searches per week and 100 file uploads per week. Enterprise Max costs 325.00 USD per seat per month, with 4,000 Pro Searches per week, 800 Browser Agent queries per month, 1,000 file uploads per week, 10,000 personal files, and 5,000 files per project; it also supports 15 monthly video generations. Both Enterprise tiers exclude API usage, which requires separate credits.

Enterprise is built for managed teams rather than a solo buyer: admins can manage members, billing, and seat counts, and seats in one organization are consolidated onto one invoice. Enterprise Pro and Max do not offer self-serve trials. Enterprise privacy options include SSO, SCIM, audit logs, and retention controls; customer data is not used to train AI models. Major credit cards are accepted, with invoice and wire transfer options available in checkout. Accidental purchases can be addressed through support under the refund policy.

Platforms

Perplexity is available on Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, and the web, with API access listed separately. Its Comet browser is available for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. Security commitments include SOC 2 Type 2 certification, GDPR-aligned and HIPAA-aligned safeguards, and PCI compliance.

Who it's for

Perplexity is a strong fit for readers who value cited answers, researchers who need multi-source reports, and professionals who want web search alongside files and connected apps. Max is explicitly aimed at professionals, content creators and writers, business strategists, academic researchers, and power users. Casual users asking simple questions can stay with Free; people who need frequent, expanded access should weigh Pro before paying for Max.

Pros and cons

Pros: Inline citations make answers easier to verify and follow up.
Pros: One search experience reaches the web, files, and more than 400 connected apps.
Pros: Deep Research can turn extensive searching into a report, while model choice spans multiple leading systems.
Cons: Free use is limited and intended for simple questions, so regular work requires a paid plan.
Cons: Max's $200.00 USD per month price is a substantial commitment, and its model access does not cover API use.
Cons: Enterprise API access is also separate, adding a distinct credit requirement for teams that need programmatic usage.

Alternatives

Choose Genspark Design if its free allowance of 100 credits per day or its listed Linux platform matters more to you. Fabric is an alternative with a Plus plan at 8.00 USD per month billed yearly at $96/yr, including 50GB storage and light AI usage. Liner offers unlimited Advanced Search on Free, alongside image generation and Deep Research access. Kimi Deep Research has a free monthly allowance measured by token consumption rather than query count. Gab AI Research Assistant offers 250 starting credits on Free, with web search and file analysis. Consensus is oriented around papers, with unlimited paper searches and three Deep reviews per month on its free tier. Elicit offers unlimited search across more than 138 million papers on Basic, alongside limited research-agent and report use. SciSpace has a free Basic plan with 100 monthly credits.

Verdict

Choose Perplexity if you want a cited AI answer engine that can move from web research into your files and connected apps, with deeper reports and higher limits as work grows. Its main advantage is the breadth of that research workflow; its clearest reason to look elsewhere is the cost of sustained, high-volume use, especially Max or per-seat Enterprise plans.
