Overview

SWC is a free, open-source Rust toolchain for compiling and transforming JavaScript and TypeScript. It is best suited to developers building JavaScript tooling or integrating compilation into an existing workflow. Its speed and broad parsing support are compelling, but its own bundler is not a durable choice for projects planning to move to v2.

SWC compiles modern syntax into code intended for major browsers, and its core API parses ECMAScript, TypeScript, and Flow. The project names Next.js, Parcel, and Deno among tools that use it, and lists Vercel, ByteDance, Tencent, Shopify, and Trip.com among its users. Those examples show its reach, while the documentation’s description of @swc/core as mainly useful to build-tool authors signals that it is more naturally a foundation for tooling than a turnkey app-development experience.

SWC states that it is 20x faster than Babel on a single thread and 70x faster on four cores. Those figures make speed a central part of its case, though the practical result will depend on the workload and environment.

Key features

Compilation and targets: SWC aims to support ECMAScript features, stage 3 proposals, and preset-env transforms, including bugfix transforms. Browserslist-compatible queries or minimum versions let teams target browsers, iOS, Android, Node, or Electron rather than relying on a single output target.
Transformation toolkit: Minification, WebAssembly transforms, custom plugins, code splitting, tree shaking, and source maps make SWC useful across more of a build pipeline than syntax conversion alone.
Build and test integrations: Integrations include webpack, Rspack, and Jest. The @swc/jest package can replace Jest’s default JavaScript-based ts-jest runner with a Rust implementation, a practical option for teams seeking a different transform path in tests.
Browser execution: @swc/wasm-web can synchronously transform code in a browser using WebAssembly, useful when transformation needs to happen client-side rather than only in a build process.
Installation choices: Prebuilt binaries and source builds are available, with installation documented for npm, Yarn, pnpm, Bun, and Deno. That breadth accommodates varied toolchains, though selecting and maintaining the right integration still calls for developer expertise.
Bundling caveat: SWC’s bundling feature is slated to be dropped in v2, and the project recommends SWC-based bundlers such as Parcel 2, Turbopack, Rspack, and fe-farm. Teams choosing SWC should avoid tying a long-term build pipeline to its bundled functionality.
Polyfill trade-off: SWC warns that its polyfill usage mode is less efficient than Babel for certain dynamically computed property expressions. Babel may be the better fit when that particular behavior matters more than SWC’s stated speed advantage.

Pricing

SWC has one free plan: 0.00 USD per free, described as an open-source Rust-based developer toolchain. There is no free trial because the tool is free, and no paid tier or seat-based plan is part of this offer. For individual developers and teams able to manage their own integration, the absence of a subscription removes a software cost; the trade-off is that SWC is a developer toolchain, not a packaged service with a stated paid support tier.

Platforms

SWC is listed for Android, API, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. The package and build options span common JavaScript package managers, while the WebAssembly module enables browser-side transformation. That combination suits cross-platform development workflows, although the platform list does not change the need to configure SWC for each project’s targets.

Who it's for

SWC is a strong candidate for build-tool authors and development teams that want a Rust-based compiler integrated into compilation, minification, testing, or browser transformation workflows. Its parser breadth and target controls also suit projects that need to support multiple JavaScript environments. It is less appropriate for teams seeking a stable built-in bundler for the long term, or for workloads where SWC’s documented polyfill limitation is decisive.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad language and target coverage: ECMAScript, TypeScript, and Flow parsing, along with browser and runtime target controls, can serve varied JavaScript projects.
Useful workflow integrations: webpack, Rspack, and Jest integrations extend SWC beyond standalone compilation.
Free and open source: The toolchain has a 0.00 USD per free plan, with installation paths across several package managers.

Cons

Bundler transition: The planned v2 removal makes SWC’s own bundling feature a poor foundation for a long-lived pipeline.
Polyfill limitation: Some dynamically computed property expressions are handled less efficiently than with Babel’s polyfill usage mode.
Developer-oriented setup: The core APIs are mainly aimed at build-tool authors, so teams looking for a finished, low-configuration application workflow may prefer another approach.

Alternatives

Code Transpilers and JavaScript Build Tools provide broader category comparisons. Among individual options, choose Babel instead when its polyfill behavior for dynamically computed property expressions is important; like SWC, it is free and available for API, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows.

Transcrypt is another free, open-source option under Apache 2.0, with Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows platforms. Google Web Toolkit is also free and open source under Apache 2.0, and lists extension, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows support. ClojureScript is free open-source software under the Eclipse Public License 1.0, while Kotlin/JS is a free Kotlin compiler target for JavaScript configured with the Kotlin Multiplatform Gradle plugin. These alternatives are worth considering when their respective language or compiler approach better matches a project.

Cython is free under Apache 2.0 and supports Linux, macOS, and Windows; Vala is free, community-made, and supports those same desktop platforms. CoffeeScript is another free option, listed for API, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. Consider them when their respective language or platform fit is preferable.

Verdict

Choose SWC if you are a developer or build-tool author who wants a free Rust-based compiler with broad JavaScript-family parsing, target controls, and integrations across builds and tests. Its stated performance and workflow breadth make it attractive as a toolchain component. Look elsewhere if you need SWC itself to remain your bundler through v2, or if Babel’s handling of the documented polyfill edge case better suits your code.
