Overview

Intercom is a customer messaging and support platform for organizations serving customers through a website, app, or product. It suits teams that want live chat, shared support workflows, and AI-assisted answers in one system; its breadth is useful, but seat fees and per-outcome charges call for careful budgeting.

Founded in 2011 and based in San Francisco, Intercom supports web, Android, and iOS. Its Messenger can be tailored in tone, style, and design, while its 450 listed integrations and compatibility with helpdesks such as Salesforce, HubSpot, and Freshdesk give teams options for fitting it into existing service operations. Intercom says more than 30,000 businesses use its products.

Those needs span Customer Service CRM Software, AI Customer Service Agents, AI Customer Service Software, Conversational Marketing Software, Customer Self-Service Software, and Help desk software.

Key features

Customer messaging and team workflow

Intercom combines website chatbot and live-agent chat with visitor tracking and omnichannel messaging. A shared inbox, ticketing, SLA management, and a visual flow builder cover both day-to-day agent work and guided customer journeys. Advanced adds multiple team inboxes and round-robin assignment, which is more useful to teams dividing work across groups than to a small support operation with a single queue.

The public help center supports customer self-service, and pre-built reports give teams a starting point for reviewing support activity. Messenger works across web, iOS, and Android experiences, an advantage for businesses that need a consistent route to support across product surfaces.

Fin AI and human handoff

Fin answers free-form questions from approved knowledge and cites its sources in replies, giving customers a way to check the basis of an answer. When automation is not enough, it passes the conversation to an agent with the conversation and customer history attached, reducing the need to restart the exchange. Fin can also connect with existing helpdesks, so using its AI does not necessarily require replacing a current support system.

Fin is priced per outcome rather than being included as an unlimited agent service: standard Fin starts at $0.99 per outcome, and Fin Voice is $1.99 per voice outcome. A reopened conversation receives a refund for the Fin outcome, and Fin includes a 90-day money-back guarantee with spending limits and alerts. Those protections help manage risk, but teams still need to account for usage-based charges.

Pricing

Intercom has no free plan. Its trial lasts 14 days; payment starts only after a plan is chosen and payment details are added. The pricing note gives a starting figure of $29/user/mo (annual), while the plans below show additional price points and billing terms. Confirm the plan and billing basis that apply to the intended setup before committing.

Plan	Price	What it means
Essential	$19.00 USD per month, billed annually per seat/month	Includes Fin AI Agent, Messenger, shared inbox and ticketing, pre-built reports, and a public help center. It is the entry point for a team that wants core support tools, but it does not include the Advanced or Expert seat allowances and capabilities.
Advanced	$85.00 USD per month, billed annually per seat/month	Includes 20 free Lite seats, plus multiple team inboxes and round-robin assignment. The seat allowance and routing tools suit teams with distinct queues, though the per-seat price is a significant step up from Essential.
Expert	$132.00 USD per month, billed annually per seat/month	Includes 50 free Lite seats and adds SSO, identity management, and HIPAA support. It is the fit for organizations needing those controls, rather than teams that only need shared messaging.
Fin AI Agent	$0.99 USD per outcome, from $0.99	AI-powered answers, support across live chat, email, phone, and other channels, and context-rich human handoff. Outcome billing makes usage important to forecast.
Fin AI Agent with existing helpdesk	$0.99 USD per outcome; minimum monthly commitment applies	A route to Fin for teams keeping their current helpdesk, with a minimum commitment to factor into cost.
Fin Voice	$1.99 USD per voice outcome; available via sales	Voice outcomes have a higher per-outcome price and require a sales route.
Copilot	$29.00 USD per month, billed annually per teammate/month	A separate per-teammate monthly charge.
Copilot monthly	$35.00 USD per month, billed monthly per agent/month	Monthly billing avoids an annual term but costs more than the annual Copilot rate.
Proactive Support Plus	$99.00 USD per month	Includes 500 messages, so message volume matters when assessing fit.
Pro	$99.00 USD per month per workspace	Workspace-based pricing rather than per-seat pricing.

Advanced and Expert include free Lite seats, but those allowances should not be confused with the seat-based plan prices. Teams should compare the number of paid seats they need alongside Fin outcomes, add-on charges, and any minimum monthly commitment; otherwise a low per-outcome starting price can obscure total spend.

Platforms

Intercom is available on web, Android, and iOS. Messenger supports web, iOS, and Android customer experiences, covering the main surfaces for customers using a site or mobile app.

Who it's for

Intercom is best suited to businesses that handle customer conversations across digital channels and want self-service, live agents, and AI automation connected to team workflows. Its customization, knowledge-based Fin answers, and contextual handoff are particularly relevant when customers may need both quick automated help and a person who can pick up the thread.

It is a less natural fit for a small team seeking a free support product or a simple flat-price arrangement: there is no free plan, core plans are seat-priced, and Fin adds outcome-based fees. The 14-day trial provides a way to assess the setup before payment begins.

Pros and cons

Broad conversation coverage: Chat, visitor tracking, shared inbox, ticketing, help center, and omnichannel support bring customer-facing and agent work together.
Useful AI handoff: Fin cites approved knowledge and transfers customer history with conversations, helping automated support connect to human service.
Flexible deployment: Messenger's web and mobile support, 450 listed integrations, and existing-helpdesk compatibility allow varied service setups.
Costs need active management: Seat pricing combines with per-outcome charges, and one Fin option has a minimum monthly commitment.
Key controls sit higher up: SSO, identity management, and HIPAA support are included with Expert, so organizations needing them must consider the higher tier.
No free plan: The trial is limited to 14 days, after which continued use requires a paid plan.

Alternatives

Choose Kustomer if its Ultimate plan's stated scale limits—100M custom objects and tasks, a 2,000 RPM API rate limit, and support for 300 brands—better match a large, multi-brand operation; its pricing is custom.

Salesforce Service Cloud is worth considering if a $25.00 USD monthly Starter Suite with case management, built-in AI, and sales flows is a closer match; it has no free plan and its listed platform is API.

1CRM may suit a small organization prioritizing a free tier and broad desktop and mobile platform coverage; its Startup cloud subscription is $13.00 USD per user/month billed annually, capped at three users.

eGain Customer Engagement Hub is another paid customer-engagement option for web and mobile.

Dixa is an alternative for teams seeking a contact center with phone, email, forms, chat, social, knowledge base, and intelligent routing; its Growth plan is €89.00 EUR per month, billed monthly.

Vtiger CRM is worth a look for buyers who want a free CRM tier, with One Pilot capped at 10 users and 3,000 records.

Gladly is another paid option.

ServiceNow Customer Service Management AI Agents is another paid option, with a CSM Advanced plan.

Verdict

Intercom is a strong choice for customer-facing businesses that need messaging, structured support work, and AI answers with a clear path to an agent. Its contextual handoff and breadth across channels are the main reasons to choose it; the main reason to look elsewhere is the combined cost of paid seats and outcome-based AI, especially for teams that need only a basic helpdesk or a free plan.
