Overview

Inngest combines retry, state, and recovery handling with traces that follow work from trigger to completion. That makes it a strong fit when a job cannot simply disappear after a transient failure, or when teams need to see how an event-driven task progressed. Its flow controls also address concurrency and fairness when users compete for resources.

The trade-off is that the Free plan has a hard execution quota: once reached, execution pauses until the account upgrades. Teams with workloads that can exceed that ceiling should budget for a paid tier rather than treating the free allowance as an unlimited safety net.

Key features

Durable execution: Steps handle retries, state, and recovery automatically. This reduces the need to build those safeguards around every asynchronous task, especially for workflows where failures must not strand work.
Tracing: Traces cover background jobs, agents, and events from trigger through completion. Trace history is capped by plan, so teams diagnosing older executions should compare the retention window with their operational needs.
Flow control: Concurrency and fairness controls help manage contention among users. Pro starts at 100+ concurrent steps and Business at 500, making Business the clearer fit for larger workloads that need the higher stated ceiling.
Sandboxing and evaluation: Inngest describes isolated sandboxes for testing changes, plus tools to score and compare variants on production traffic. This is useful for teams evaluating changes to agent behavior or workflow variants.
SDKs and integrations: Open-source SDKs for TypeScript, Python, and Go sit alongside a REST API. Documented integrations include deployment syncs for Vercel and Netlify, Neon database events, and Datadog and Prometheus monitoring.
Deployment flexibility: Functions can run wherever an application is hosted, with guides for Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare Pages, Render, and DigitalOcean. This suits teams that want workflow orchestration without moving their app to a single hosting platform.

Pricing

Inngest is freemium, with no free trial. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 5 seats, 50k executions, 500k events ingested, and 24 hour trace history. It is a useful starting point for small workloads, but execution pauses at the quota until the account upgrades.

Pro is 99.00 USD per month, billed Starting at. It includes 15 seats, 1M executions + add-on, 100+ concurrent steps, 5M+ events ingested, and 7 day trace history. It is the first paid step for teams that need more capacity and a longer window for investigating runs; the starting price and add-on execution model mean costs can rise with demand.

Business is 499.00 USD per month, billed Starting at, and includes 30 seats, 10M executions + add-on, 500 concurrent steps, 50M+ events ingested, and 14 day trace history. Its higher concurrency and quotas suit larger teams, while its starting price makes it a substantial jump from Pro.

Enterprise has custom pricing and custom executions and limits, plus SAML, RBAC, audit trails, HIPAA included, a dedicated Slack channel, and dedicated account management. It is the fit for organizations needing those controls and support rather than a fixed published allowance. The Free plan is the only tier with a stated fixed free execution quota; paid tiers describe executions with add-ons.

Platforms

Inngest is available through an API and for Linux, self-hosted, and web environments. Its runtime languages are TypeScript, Python, and Go, and preview deployments are supported.

Who it's for

Choose Inngest if your team builds event-driven services, background jobs, or agents and values durable recovery, traceability, and controls over competing work. Its multiple SDKs and deployment guides suit teams working across common hosting platforms. It is less compelling for a tiny workload that will outgrow the Free execution cap, or for teams that do not need orchestration and its associated plan limits.

Pros and cons

Pro: Automatic retries, state, and failure recovery make durable behavior part of the workflow model rather than an extra layer teams must assemble themselves.
Pro: Tracing and flow controls pair operational visibility with ways to manage contention, while retention and concurrency scale across paid plans.
Pro: TypeScript, Python, and Go SDKs, a REST API, and multiple hosting guides give teams options for integrating and deploying functions.
Con: Free execution stops at 50k until upgrade, so an unexpected increase in activity can halt work on the free tier.
Con: Pro and Business prices are starting prices, and execution allowances include add-ons, so the base monthly price is not a guaranteed ceiling for heavier usage.
Con: Trace history ranges from 24 hours on Free to 14 days on Business, which may constrain investigations that need older records.

Alternatives

For a broader directory of Task Queue Software, Process Orchestration Software, or Workflow Orchestration Software, compare the category lists.

Trigger.dev is another freemium API, self-hosted, and web option; its Free plan includes $5 / month free credits, 20 concurrent runs, unlimited tasks, five team members, Dev and Prod environments, and preview branches.
pg-boss is a free, MIT-licensed option that runs in your own database with no per-job charges, a fit when owning the database-backed queue matters more than Inngest's stated workflow controls.
Celery is a free open-source distributed task queue installable via PyPI or from source.
Taskiq is a free option for Linux, macOS, self-hosted, and Windows environments.
Sidekiq offers a free open-source OSS plan and a paid Enterprise plan starting at 269.00 USD per month.
Faktory has a free AGPL OSS plan without dedicated support, plus paid enterprise packs.
River offers a free open-source plan with reliable background jobs and an intuitive web UI, but no workflows, concurrency limits, or support.
Hangfire offers a free Open plan for commercial use with Hangfire Core under LGPL 3.0 and SQL Server 2008 R2+ and In-Memory storage.

Verdict

Inngest is a strong choice for teams running asynchronous workloads that need durable recovery, trace visibility, and managed concurrency without tying functions to one hosting platform. Its main reason to look elsewhere is cost and capacity certainty: the free tier stops at its execution cap, while paid execution can require add-ons and Enterprise uses custom pricing.
