Overview

ProGet brings package feeds and Docker containers into a shared repository that can be self-hosted or deployed through cloud VMs or containers. It supports 22 formats, including NuGet, PyPI, npm, Maven, Conda, Ruby Gems, Chocolatey and Linux distribution packages. That breadth is useful for organizations with mixed development stacks, but may be more than a team needs if it only wants a place to store container images.

Teams can cache upstream packages locally, route them through approval workflows, detect licenses and block packages that fail policy checks. Vulnerability scanning and fine-grained feed access extend those controls to packages and container contents. ProGet can also create private Docker registries and help ensure that only approved images move to production.

Key features

Curation and security

ProGet combines package caching with approval workflows, license detection and vulnerability scanning. This gives teams a way to review dependencies before they reach developers or production, rather than treating the repository as passive storage. The Free Edition has limited security and compliance features, so organizations that need those controls should budget for a paid tier.

Inedo says its Security Labs maintains a vulnerability database and devotes 10% of its resources to cybersecurity research. That is a useful part of the product’s security approach, alongside the ability to scan packages and containers, but it does not remove the need to choose a plan with the protections an organization requires.

Delivery, identity and storage

ProGet integrates with nearly any CI/CD tool and provides a CLI and HTTP API for identifying components and publishing SBOMs. Connectors can aggregate feeds from ProGet, NuGet.org, Azure DevOps Packages and Artifactory. LDAP and SAML support, load balancing, high availability and feed replication give larger deployments options for identity management, resilience and disaster recovery.

Asset Directories can store or replicate assets across S3, Google Cloud, Azure and local storage. Windows installation is managed through Inedo Hub; Linux hosting is provided through Docker, and cloud VM or container deployment is also supported. The Linux installation guide recommends at least 2 vCPU and 2 GB of RAM for a container, while ProGet itself uses less than 1 GB of disk space.

Pricing

ProGet is freemium, but its paid editions are licensed annually per server. Every edition supports unlimited users and feeds, which avoids per-seat charges as teams grow; separate licenses are required for test or development installations. The Free Edition is commercially usable and includes unlimited feeds for private packages and Docker, but its limited security and compliance features make it a narrower fit for organizations with governance requirements.

ProGet Free Edition: 0.00 USD per free. Best for teams that need private package and Docker feeds without the full security and compliance feature set.
Basic: 2395.00 USD per year, billed $2,395/year. A fit for small teams with basic security needs; it is the lowest paid tier.
Cloud Edition: 4895.00 USD per year, billed Starting from $4,895/yr. It adds managed services and proactive monitoring, with 20TB bandwidth and 400GB storage, for teams that prefer a managed option.
Enterprise Essentials: 11995.00 USD per year, billed $11,995/year. Aimed at organizations needing enterprise-level security, protection and compliance features.
ISV Edition: 11995.00 USD per year, billed Starting from $11,995/yr. It is tailored to software vendors needing a customer download center for licensed products that their own team can maintain.
Enterprise Complete: 29995.00 USD per year, billed Starting From $29,995/year. It includes multiple licenses for production and sandbox use, plus dedicated support.
Edge Edition: 59995.00 USD per year, billed Starting at $59,995/yr. It targets deployments needing Enterprise features, edge nodes, dashboards and scalable pricing.

A free trial is available. Paid users can access private support tickets; Inedo also provides engineer-led forum support and professional services for training, maintenance and custom scripts or plug-ins.

Platforms

ProGet supports Windows and Linux installations, web access and an API. It can be self-hosted or deployed through cloud infrastructure. The mix gives teams room to keep repositories under their own control or use cloud deployment, but the annual per-server licensing model still applies to paid editions.

Who it's for

ProGet is strongest for small teams through enterprises that work across several package ecosystems and want a central point for curation, access control and container management. Its unlimited users and feeds suit growing organizations, while SAML, LDAP, high availability and replication address more demanding deployments. A team with only basic storage needs may find the Free Edition sufficient; one that needs robust security or compliance should compare the paid tiers against its deployment and support requirements.

Pros and cons

Pro: Broad support for package formats and Docker containers lets teams consolidate artifacts across different stacks.
Pro: Caching, approvals, license detection, vulnerability scanning and fine-grained access control provide meaningful checks before packages and images reach production.
Pro: Unlimited users and feeds across editions avoid per-seat and feed-count limits as usage grows.
Con: The Free Edition’s security and compliance limits may rule it out for teams with formal governance needs.
Con: Paid editions start at $2,395/year per server, and test or development installations need separate licenses.
Con: The highest listed tiers reach $59,995/year, making ProGet a substantial commitment for organizations that need edge or enterprise-scale capabilities.

Verdict

Choose ProGet if your organization needs one repository for packages and containers, plus curation and access controls that can scale from a small team to an enterprise. Its breadth and security workflow are the main reasons to choose it; look elsewhere if you need only a basic registry or cannot justify annual per-server licensing for the security and compliance features you require.
