Overview

Imgflip Meme Generator is an online editor for making memes and other graphics from templates, uploads, or a blank canvas. It is best suited to people who want a large choice of formats and more editing controls than captioning alone. The free version is usable, but its watermark and link-based image access may rule it out for polished or sensitive work.

Key features

The searchable collection of more than 1 million user-uploaded templates gives meme-makers a broad range of starting points. Upload an image from a device or URL, or begin with a blank template when a ready-made format is not right. Editing includes text and image additions, stickers, drawing, spacing, filters, cropping, rotation, flipping, and vertically stacked meme chains. That flexibility also suits posters, banners, advertisements, and other custom graphics, though it is more capability than someone seeking only quick captions may need.

Device-installed fonts and more than 1,300 free fonts provide room to match a design's style. Animated templates appear in search; users can browse GIF templates or make their own with GIF Maker. AI creation tools and background removal are paid features. For collaboration in Slack, the Imgflip app creates and posts memes in channels through /imgflip text commands. API authentication uses Bearer tokens, and Imgflip says it stores only a hash of each API key; API-created images are public by URL, and the caption_image API has no private option.

Image privacy deserves attention: images are accessible to anyone with the link unless marked private, while private images cannot be shared by link. That tradeoff is inconvenient for controlled sharing and makes the API's public-by-URL behavior especially important to consider.

Pricing

Free: 0.00 USD per free. It includes access to more than 1 million meme templates, but exports carry an Imgflip watermark and the service displays ads. It is a reasonable starting point for casual creations where branding and advertising are acceptable.

Basic: 4.95 USD per month, billed yearly (save 17%). Basic is for meme makers who want AI creation tools, background removal, watermark removal, and disabled ads. It is limited to memes, so it is not the right upgrade for GIF or video work.

Pro: 11.95 USD per month, billed yearly (save 20%). It includes GIFs and memes, unlimited AI creation and background removal, watermark removal, and disabled ads. It also supports 1,600 GIF frames, 240-second video segments, and sound on GIFs, making it the fit for more involved animated projects. Both paid prices are tied to yearly billing; the monthly figures should not be mistaken for month-to-month terms.

Platforms

Imgflip supports web, Android, an API, and an extension. It has no mobile apps, so Android availability should not be confused with a dedicated app. The API is useful for integrations, but its public-image behavior limits its suitability for private outputs.

Who it's for

Choose Imgflip if you want a large template library, substantial control over static designs, or a route from memes into broader graphics. Pro is the stronger choice for GIF creation and longer video segments. Look elsewhere if you need a watermark-free free export, private link sharing, or a dedicated mobile app.

Pros and cons

Pro: More than 1 million searchable templates, plus uploads and blank canvases, cover both familiar meme formats and original designs.
Pro: Editing tools, extensive font options, GIF Maker, and Slack commands support more than basic captioning.
Pro: Pro combines sound on GIFs with substantial frame and segment limits for animated work.
Con: The free plan adds a watermark and ads, while watermark removal requires a paid plan.
Con: Images are public by link unless made private, and API-created images have no private option.
Con: Basic excludes GIFs, and neither paid plan is presented as a month-to-month subscription.

Verdict

Imgflip is a strong choice for meme-makers who value a huge template pool and detailed editing, especially those willing to pay for watermark-free exports or animated work. The free plan is useful for casual output, but choose another tool if you need unwatermarked free files or tighter control over link sharing.
