Overview

Nagios XI compares monitored systems and services with configured thresholds, records results, and sends notifications. Its scope includes agentless and hybrid monitoring, server auto-discovery, process and container monitoring, and application and network-conversation visibility. That breadth makes it a practical option for teams overseeing varied infrastructure, though it is not a hosted monitoring service: the monitoring server runs on Linux that you own.

Deployment can use virtual machine images for VMware Workstation, Oracle VirtualBox, VMware ESXi and vSphere, or Microsoft Hyper-V. Offline installation is supported on Red Hat and CentOS Stream, with dependencies included in the installer. Nagios XI supports Linux, Windows, macOS, AIX, and Solaris systems, while its own deployment remains Linux-based.

Key features

Standard provides more than 90 Configuration Wizards, Auto-Discovery, dashboards, performance graphs, an open REST API, automation, configuration rollback, and snapshots. These tools support varied configuration and administration workflows, and discovery can help teams identify systems to monitor. They do not remove the need to operate the self-hosted Linux installation.

Enterprise adds SLA reports, Capacity Planning, scheduled reports and pages, Business Process Intelligence, bulk modification tools, and an Audit Log. These additions are most relevant to teams that need reporting, planning, and oversight beyond Standard's monitoring and configuration features; otherwise, Standard avoids paying for capabilities that may not be needed.

Authentication options include Active Directory or LDAP over SSL, Microsoft Entra ID single sign-on, and two-factor authentication through Duo. Administrators can restrict users to assigned Host and Service groups, which helps separate access by responsibility.

Pricing

The Free edition costs 0.00 USD per free and supports up to 7 Nodes or 100 Services, whichever comes first. It includes most Standard features but is self-supported, making it a way to start small rather than a substitute for paid capacity or included support.

Standard costs 2595.00 USD per once for the 100-Node license shown. It allows unlimited Services per licensed Node and includes the first year of Maintenance & Support. This is the lower-cost paid choice for teams that need the Standard feature set and fit within 100 Nodes.

Enterprise costs 4690.00 USD per once for 100 Nodes, with unlimited Services per licensed Node and Enterprise features. It is the better fit when SLA reporting, capacity planning, scheduled reports, or audit capabilities justify the higher initial price.

Sitewide has custom pricing and includes multiple installations, unlimited Nodes, Enterprise features, and a Nagios Fusion license. It is aimed at deployments that exceed a fixed node count or require multiple installations, but requires a sales conversation to establish cost.

Paid licenses are perpetual and priced by monitored Nodes, with no per-node Service limit. One license key permits three installations—production, test or lab, and disaster recovery—under the stated operating conditions. A paid license includes the first year of Maintenance & Support, version upgrades, up to ten support cases, Support Portal access, Premium features, and an assigned Customer Success Manager; the Free edition is self-supported. The 30-day trial offers unlimited monitoring, Enterprise features, and direct technical support, with no credit card required.

Platforms

Nagios XI is self-hosted on Linux and also offers virtual machine images for VMware Workstation, Oracle VirtualBox, VMware ESXi and vSphere, and Microsoft Hyper-V. Its support for offline installation on Red Hat and CentOS Stream is useful for restricted environments. Organizations seeking a vendor-hosted deployment should look elsewhere.

Who it's for

Nagios XI is best suited to infrastructure teams that can maintain a Linux server and want configurable monitoring across systems, services, and network devices. The perpetual node-based model can suit organizations that prefer an upfront license and need many services per node. Smaller environments can use the capped Free edition, while teams requiring more than 7 Nodes or 100 Services need to consider paid licensing.

It is less suitable for teams that want managed hosting or cannot commit to the paid license cost and Linux operations. Enterprise features are valuable when reporting and capacity planning are operational needs, not merely because the edition has a longer feature list.

Pros and cons

Pros: Unlimited Services per licensed Node makes the paid license less restrictive for dense monitoring setups.
Pros: Three installations per license key can cover production, test or lab, and disaster recovery under the stated conditions.
Pros: The 30-day trial includes unlimited monitoring and Enterprise features without requiring a credit card.
Cons: Paid entry is a substantial upfront purchase, with the Standard 100-Node license costing 2595.00 USD per once.
Cons: The monitoring server must be self-hosted on Linux, adding operational responsibility for the buyer.
Cons: Free monitoring stops at 7 Nodes or 100 Services, whichever limit is reached first, and is self-supported.

Alternatives

For network-flow analysis specifically, ntopng offers a free Community (Open Source) plan for home and network practitioners, with a suggested maximum of 256 live local hosts; choose it when that scale and audience fit better than Nagios XI's broader infrastructure monitoring.

ManageEngine NetFlow Analyzer may suit teams seeking a freemium network-flow product with editions priced by interface count, including a free edition capped at 2 interfaces.

FlowViewer is free software that requires a Unix server, making it an option for readers looking for a free, Unix-based flow tool.

Caligare Flow Inspector has a free edition limited to non-commercial use, 2 devices, 24-hour history, and 250 flows per second; choose it when those limits meet a small evaluation or deployment.

ElastiFlow offers a free Basic plan with up to 4,000 records per second and 25 SNMP devices, plus dashboards and ML detections, for readers prioritizing those stated flow-monitoring allowances.

Riverbed Aternity is an enterprise digital experience management offering with custom pricing.

nfdump is a free BSD-licensed option for readers seeking flow tools without a paid plan.

Akvorado is a free option developed by Free, a French ISP.

Readers comparing wider categories can browse Network Traffic Analysis Software, Cloud Monitoring, DNS Monitoring Software, Bandwidth Monitoring Software, Infrastructure Monitoring, and Metrics Monitoring Tools.

Verdict

Choose Nagios XI if your team can run Linux infrastructure and wants broad, configurable monitoring with perpetual node-based licensing and unlimited services per paid node. Its strongest case is control over deployment and service scale, backed by a substantial trial. Look elsewhere if you need hosted monitoring, a low-cost paid entry point, or a free edition beyond its small node and service caps.
