Overview

HAProxy combines reverse proxying, Layer 4 and Layer 7 routing, load balancing, and TLS termination. Its event-driven architecture and light multithreading on SMP machines are designed to handle substantial traffic without making the software a managed service. The project reports a benchmark of up to 2 million SSL requests per second and 100 Gbps of forwarded traffic on AWS Graviton2; that result describes a particular setup, not a guarantee for every deployment.

The project supports TCP and HTTP-based applications, and recent versions include QUIC and HTTP/3 features. HAProxy 3.4 adds dynamic backends, HTTP/2 flood protections, ACME improvements, experimental QMUX, and an OpenTelemetry filter. These additions extend its routing, security, certificate, and observability options, though QMUX is explicitly experimental.

Key features

Traffic management: Layer 4 and Layer 7 routing cover TCP and HTTP use cases, while TLS termination and load balancing address common front-door infrastructure needs.
Security defenses: Chroot, privilege drops, fork prevention, strict protocol validation, and checks for impossible states provide several layers of protection. They strengthen a self-managed deployment but do not remove the operator’s responsibility for configuration and maintenance.
Modern protocol and certificate work: Recent releases include QUIC and HTTP/3 features, and HAProxy 3.4 improves ACME support, including DNS-01 challenges.
Release choices: Even-numbered LTS branches receive five years of maintenance; odd-numbered stable branches receive 12 to 18 months. That gives operators a longer-lived option, while the shorter stable window suits teams prepared to upgrade more often. HAProxy 3.4 is in development, with 3.4.6 the latest release listed in that branch.

Pricing

The HAProxy Community Edition plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes a free load balancer with TCP and HTTP proxying. There is no free trial because the community edition is free, and there are no paid tiers or seat limits stated for this plan. The meaningful cost is operational: it is self-hosted rather than a managed service, so teams need to run and maintain it themselves.

For commercial support contracts and professional services, HAProxy Technologies is the route the project points users toward. HAProxy Enterprise has custom pricing for organizations that want a paid offering instead.

Platforms

HAProxy runs on Linux and is self-hosted. It ships with most mainstream Linux distributions and is often deployed by default in cloud platforms. The official site provides source repositories, release tarballs, snapshots, and versioned documentation, giving Linux operators several ways to obtain the software but leaving installation and infrastructure choices in their hands.

Who it's for

Choose Community Edition if you need TCP or HTTP proxying, load balancing, or TLS termination on Linux and have the skills and capacity to operate the service. Its long-maintained LTS branches are particularly useful for teams that want to plan around a five-year maintenance window. It is a weaker fit for buyers seeking a managed load balancer, turnkey vendor support, or a service hosted on their behalf.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free TCP and HTTP proxying, Layer 4 and Layer 7 routing, and TLS termination make it useful across several common load-balancing needs without a license charge.
Pro: Five-year maintenance for even-numbered LTS branches offers a longer support horizon than the 12-to-18-month window for odd-numbered stable branches.
Pro: Multiple protocol defenses and recent HTTP/2 flood protections address security concerns directly in the proxy.
Con: Self-hosting means the operator must handle deployment and ongoing maintenance; teams wanting a managed service should look elsewhere.
Con: The project’s high benchmark is specific to AWS Graviton2 and should not be treated as a performance promise for other hardware or workloads.
Con: The latest listed 3.4 release is in a branch marked in development, so operators who prioritize a mature branch should weigh the LTS and stable maintenance options.

Alternatives

For a broader set of load balancing software or reverse proxy software, compare the category listings. For managed or cloud-provider options, the alternatives differ in cost and deployment model:

AWS Elastic Load Balancing is worth considering for API and web use when its paid model and AWS Free Tier allowance—750 shared monthly hours for Classic and Application Load Balancers and 15 GB of Classic Load Balancer data processing for new AWS customers—fit your needs.
Google Cloud Load Balancing suits API and web deployments that can use a pay-as-you-go model; charges depend on forwarding rules, processed traffic, and other applicable services, and it has no free plan.
Alibaba Cloud Server Load Balancer is an option for web deployments seeking a paid cloud service; its ALB Basic reference price is 0.01 USD per month, billed hourly, with 200 backend servers per instance.
Progress Kemp LoadMaster may suit teams evaluating a freemium product with a time-limited option: its temporary trial license is free for 30 days and includes the VLM-MAX model and Enterprise Plus Support.
Cloudflare Load Balancing is a web-based paid alternative with a Basic plan at 5.00 USD per month, billed monthly, for the first 500K DNS queries.
HAProxy Enterprise is the paid HAProxy option to consider when custom pricing for specific needs is appropriate.
Citrix ADC (now NetScaler) is a paid alternative whose Citrix Platform License includes unlimited Gbps throughput, unlimited NetScaler software instances, premium application and API protection, and software support.
Radware Alteon is another paid alternative to consider.

Verdict

HAProxy Community Edition is a strong choice for Linux teams that want capable TCP and HTTP load balancing without a software fee and can take responsibility for self-hosting. Its protocol coverage, layered defenses, and five-year LTS maintenance path are compelling. Look elsewhere if you need a managed service or want the vendor’s paid support and services rather than operating the proxy yourself.
