Overview

HammerAI is a character-chat and roleplay platform with tools for making stories, images, group chats, lorebooks, and personas. It is best suited to adults who want creative tools alongside character conversation, especially desktop users interested in running local models. Its mix of a generous daily cloud-message allowance and local-model support is appealing, though subscription credits expire monthly and the service has a strict age requirement.

Key features

Character chat is the center of HammerAI, but the writing, image-generation, group-chat, lorebook, and persona tools give users more ways to develop characters and fictional settings. Persistent memory is also a feature, though its operation is not explained. This breadth suits users who want one platform for roleplay and related creative work; it is less compelling for anyone seeking only a simple chat interface.

On desktop, HammerAI runs local models through Ollama and Llama.cpp. It supports more than 20 LLMs through Ollama and lets users bring an Ollama Modelfile, giving technically inclined users room to choose their own setup. Once models are downloaded, local-model use works offline. Cloud LLMs, image generation, and text-to-speech need an internet connection, so offline operation does not cover every tool.

Cloud AI providers can include services accessed through OpenRouter. HammerAI says it does not collect conversation information or use user content to train or fine-tune its models. Third-party AI providers may still process or retain messages sent to them, which matters to users choosing cloud chat. On iOS and Android, chats and characters are stored on-device by default.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 600 cloud messages per day, an 8,192-token context, two cloud LLMs, local LLMs, and an LLM API proxy. That daily allowance makes it a substantial way to try cloud chat, but the context and model selection are smaller than on paid plans.

Subscriptions add monthly credits for image generation and text-to-speech, unlimited cloud messages, longer context, and access to more cloud LLMs:

Starter — 9.00 USD per month: 1,500 credits per month, up to 150 images or 300 TTS, unlimited cloud messages, a 16,384-token context, and four cloud LLMs. It suits regular users who need more than the free daily message allowance but do not need the largest context or model selection.
Advanced — 18.00 USD per month: 3,500 credits per month, up to 350 images or 700 TTS, unlimited cloud messages, a 32,768-token context, and seven cloud LLMs. The larger allowance and context fit heavier creative use.
Ultimate — 35.00 USD per month: 9,000 credits per month, up to 900 images or 1,800 TTS, unlimited cloud messages, a 65,536-token context, and 14 cloud LLMs. It is aimed at users who will make meaningful use of the higher quotas and broader model access.

These image and TTS amounts are alternatives within each credit balance, not separate allowances. Unused subscription credits expire at the end of each billing period and do not roll over, so a subscription is a poor fit for sporadic use unless the monthly quota is reliably spent.

One-time credit packs do not expire: 1.99 USD once buys 200 credits (20 images or 40 TTS); 4.99 USD once buys 600 (60 images or 120 TTS); 9.99 USD once buys 1,300 (130 images or 260 TTS); 19.99 USD once buys 3,000 (300 images or 600 TTS); 49.99 USD once buys 8,500 (850 images or 1,700 TTS); and 99.99 USD once buys 20,000 (2,000 images or 4,000 TTS). Packs suit users who want image or voice credits without a recurring subscription, while the free plan remains the better starting point for chat-focused use.

Platforms

HammerAI offers apps for Android and iOS, plus desktop software for macOS Apple Silicon, Windows, and Linux packages for Debian, Flatpak, and RPM. A web version rounds out the platform range. Local-model and offline use are desktop advantages; mobile users get on-device storage for chats and characters by default.

Who it's for

HammerAI is for adults who want character roleplay combined with story and world-building tools, or desktop users who want to run local models. Its free cloud allowance is useful for casual conversation, while paid plans target users who need unlimited cloud messages or recurring image and TTS credits. It is not suitable for users below 18 or the local age of consent, whichever is greater. HammerAI filters content including self-harm encouragement, graphic violence, and hate speech, so it is also not the right choice for users seeking unrestricted content.

Pros and cons

Pro: Local models and offline desktop use provide an option for users who do not want every interaction to depend on cloud access.
Pro: The free plan includes 600 cloud messages a day as well as local LLMs and an API proxy, making it useful beyond a limited trial.
Pro: Story, image, group-chat, lorebook, and persona tools support more than one kind of creative work.
Con: Subscription credits expire monthly, making the paid quotas less suitable for occasional creators.
Con: Cloud providers may process or retain messages, despite HammerAI's own stated approach to conversation data.
Con: Image generation, text-to-speech, and cloud LLMs require internet access, limiting what works offline.

Alternatives

Browse the AI Roleplay Chatbots category to compare character-chat options. Consider Nastia if uncensored chat and basic companion customization are priorities; its free plan has daily token limits, and Unlimited costs 15.99 USD per month. Backyard AI is another free-plan option, with 300 messages per week, one included model, and 16k max memory in its free plan. Choose SillyTavern if free, open-source software is the deciding factor. Polybuzz offers a Basic plan at 9.90 USD per month with 20 extra avatar-generation attempts daily and a standard model. Rubii may suit users who want a 7.99 USD per month Plus plan with 800 Rubies, about 1,600 messages or 400 images, and a 200 Plus daily free quota. Plotto is worth considering for story-room AI chat with no message fee or limit on its free Basic plan, though other actions may cost coins or require payment. Xoul AI offers a Green plan at 7.00 USD per month with unlimited Jupiter model access and 400 energy per day. JuicyChat AI is another freemium alternative with Premium and Deluxe membership subscriptions.

Verdict

HammerAI is a strong fit for adult roleplayers and creative users who want character chat alongside story-building tools, with local-model support as a meaningful desktop advantage. Its free daily message allowance makes it easy to use without subscribing, and paid tiers add larger contexts and credit quotas. Look elsewhere if monthly credit expiry clashes with your usage, if you need unrestricted content, or if you are not comfortable with cloud providers potentially retaining messages.
