Overview

H&R Block Online is a tax-preparation service available through a browser and mobile devices. It is best suited to people who want a free option for a simple return or a higher tier for deductions, investments, rental income, or self-employment.

Its main trade-off is straightforward: free filing is tightly limited, and state filing costs extra. The paid tiers broaden the kinds of returns it can handle and include expert help, but their prices are custom pricing.

Key features

Filing scope and imports

The service supports self-employment, investment income, and rental income, but those capabilities do not extend to Free Online. That tier covers Form 1040 and a limited set of schedules, with interest and dividend income capped at $1,500. It excludes itemized deductions, self-employment, rental income, capital gains, business income, and foreign income. About 52% of filers qualify for Free Edition, so eligibility depends on the return, not simply on wanting to file without charge.

Premium can import investment-income information from participating institutions and transaction data from third-party crypto tax software. Users can also import a prior-year return from TurboTax or another tax-preparation service. Those imports can reduce re-entry for returning filers and investors, though state filing remains a separate per-state charge.

Help and safeguards

Deluxe, Premium, and Self-Employed include unlimited expert help. Paid DIY products also include 24/7 generative AI chat and live tax-pro help, and Tax Pro Review can be added to any DIY option during filing. These are useful escalation paths for filers who need more than self-guided preparation, although Tax Pro Review is an add-on rather than a feature included across every plan.

H&R Block says it reimburses penalties and interest resulting from qualifying errors. A qualifying larger refund or smaller tax liability can trigger a preparation-fee refund and an amended return. The company also says it provides the price upfront and updates customers if it changes; that does not remove the need to account for the extra state charge.

Pricing

H&R Block Online uses a freemium model, with state filing billed separately for each state filed.

Free Online: 0.00 USD per free. It covers simple situations using Form 1040 and limited schedules. It is a sensible starting point for eligible filers without the excluded income or deductions, but not a fallback for a return that needs itemizing, investment gains, or business reporting.
Deluxe: custom pricing. It is aimed at parents, homeowners, caretakers, and contract workers, with itemized deductions, homeowner matters, childcare expenses, and Health Savings Accounts. It fits filers whose needs exceed the free tier but do not call for the investment or business focus of higher plans.
Premium: custom pricing. It covers rental income and deductions, stock and bond investments, cryptocurrency sales, and investment reporting. Investors and rental-property filers should consider it; the free tier excludes both rental income and capital gains.
Self-Employed: custom pricing. It adds business income reporting and deductions, small-business expenses, Schedule C support, and income and expense reporting. It is the relevant tier for business income, which Free Online excludes.

State filing is an additional per-state charge on every plan, including Free Online. Expert help is included with the three paid plans; AI chat and live tax-pro help are included with paid DIY products.

Platforms

The service runs on the web, iOS, and Android. Its Tax Prep app supports filing on any device and document uploads. Online returns are stored online; downloadable software stores returns on a computer for offline work, a distinction that matters to filers who prefer local access.

Who it's for

Choose H&R Block Online if you have a simple return that qualifies for Free Online, or if you need a defined step up for deductions, investment or rental activity, or self-employment. It is less compelling when state filing charges undermine the appeal of a free return, or when a filer needs a plan price before deciding among tiers.

Pros and cons

Pro: A free Form 1040 option is available to eligible filers, with no charge for the plan itself.
Pro: Separate paid tiers address deductions, investments and rentals, and self-employment, rather than forcing those filers into the free tier's narrow scope.
Pro: Paid plans include expert help, while paid DIY products add 24/7 AI chat and live tax-pro help.
Con: Free Online excludes several common complex situations, including itemized deductions, capital gains, and business income.
Con: State filing is charged per state even on the free plan.
Con: Deluxe, Premium, and Self-Employed use custom pricing, making their cost harder to compare upfront than a published fixed price.

Alternatives

For eligible standard returns where a clear federal price matters, TaxAct offers free federal filing with state filing additional, while H&R Block also charges per state. TurboTax is another free option for simple Form 1040 returns, with $0 federal and state filing for eligible users.

Consider CloudTax if you want a mobile-focused option on Android or iOS with a free plan supporting two returns. TaxDown offers a free calculation and result preview, but submitting requires a plan. WISO Steuer lets users test all functions and pay only when submitting a return.

Keeper, ClearTax, and TurboTax Canada are alternative tax software options.

Browse Personal Tax Software for more individual filing choices, or Small Business Tax Software for business-focused tools. The broader Tax Preparation Software and AI Tax Software lists offer additional comparisons.

Verdict

H&R Block Online is a strong fit for eligible simple-return filers who want a no-cost preparation tier, and for people whose deductions, investments, rentals, or business income map cleanly to its paid plans. Its broad income coverage and expert-help options are meaningful strengths. Look elsewhere if state charges are decisive or you need published paid-plan prices before choosing.
