Overview

GCompris is a free educational software suite for children aged 2 to 10, with more than 100 activities across early learning and general discovery. It suits families and educators looking for a broad, offline activity library; its strongest case is breadth without a subscription, while platform gaps matter for some households.

Hosted and developed by the KDE community, the project has been around since 2000 and is released under the GNU Affero General Public License. Its activities are designed for training exercises both in and out of the classroom, rather than one narrowly defined subject.

Key features

Many subjects in one suite

Children can explore reading, arithmetic, science, geography, computer discovery, colors, shapes, Braille and telling time, as well as games. That range makes GCompris useful when a child’s interests or learning goals vary; it is less suited to a family seeking a tightly focused course in one skill.

Educator controls and results

Educators can choose activity levels to match each child’s skill. The companion GCompris-teachers supports custom datasets and receives pupils’ results for some activities. A teacher dashboard, progress tracking and standards alignment are also identified, though the results feature applies only to some activities.

Offline and privacy-conscious

GCompris does not require an Internet connection, making it practical in classrooms or homes where connectivity is limited. The project says it does not collect data, and the application privacy policy says it neither requests nor records user-provided information nor collects information automatically.

Download integrity

Downloads include SHA-256 hashes, and the source tarball and Linux installer are signed with a GPG key. Those checks are a useful assurance for users who want to verify downloaded files.

Pricing

GCompris costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is the educational suite with more than 100 activities, so families and schools can use its core breadth without a paid tier or trial decision. It is a particularly straightforward fit for budget-conscious use; there is no separate paid plan to weigh against it.

Platforms

GCompris is a desktop app, with downloads for Windows, Android, macOS, GNU/Linux and Raspberry Pi. The latest version is not yet available for macOS, so Mac users seeking the newest release should check before choosing it. GCompris is not available for iOS because the requirements for building and publishing iOS software conflict with the project’s licenses.

It does not require an Internet connection. The site provides support at support@gcompris.net.

Who it's for

GCompris is a strong choice for children aged 2 to 10 who benefit from variety, and for educators who want to adjust activity levels or use customized datasets and results for some exercises. Its free price, offline use and stated privacy approach are compelling for classrooms and families alike. Look elsewhere if you need an iPhone or iPad app, or if your priority is a single, structured learning program.

Pros and cons

Pro: More than 100 activities cover numerous subjects and skills, so one free suite can serve varied interests.
Pro: Offline operation and the project’s stated no-data-collection approach suit settings with limited connectivity or privacy concerns.
Pro: Educators can set skill-appropriate levels, with a teacher companion for custom datasets and results on some activities.
Con: There is no iOS version, ruling it out for families whose primary device is an iPhone or iPad.
Con: The latest version is not yet available for macOS, which may disappoint users who want the current release on a Mac.
Con: Teacher results support covers only some activities, so it is not a universal record of pupil work.
