Overview

Pro Tools is a digital audio workstation for recording, editing and mixing audio, built for music makers as well as audio-post professionals. It is a strong fit when a project needs detailed multitrack control or sound-to-picture work, but its higher track ceilings and video tools matter most on the paid tiers.

Key features

Recording supports loop takes, punch-ins and playlist comping, with up to 256 simultaneous audio inputs. That ceiling suits demanding sessions; for smaller projects, the more immediate constraint is the plan’s track allowance. Editing modes include Slip, Grid, Shuffle and Spot, alongside Elastic Audio, clip gain, pitch manipulation and audio-to-MIDI conversion. These tools give editors several ways to refine timing and performance without reducing the software to a basic recorder.

Music production combines MIDI sequencing with virtual instruments, samples and arrangement tools. Mixing brings automation, flexible routing, folder tracks and plugins, with spatial rendering for Dolby Atmos and Audio Vivid. Third-party plugins and ARA 2 integrations—including tools from Acon Digital, Celemony, iZotope, Steinberg, Synchro Arts, Sound Radix and Waves—extend the workflow. Cloud collaboration is also supported, useful for projects involving contributors working remotely.

Studio and Ultimate add video tracks and timecode, making them the relevant choices for frame-accurate scoring, dialogue editing and other sound-to-picture work. Subscribers and users with active perpetual upgrade plans receive Melodyne essential, RX 11 Spectral Editor, Acoustica Essentials, DynAssist Lite, RePitch Elements, SpectraLayers Go and WaveLab Go. The package of included tools adds breadth, though the active-coverage condition is important for perpetual-license holders.

Pricing

Pro Tools has a free Intro tier and paid subscriptions, with a 30-day trial. Intro is positioned for casual creators and allows up to 8 audio, 8 instrument and 8 MIDI tracks. That is a useful way to begin, but the small track limits make it a poor fit for larger arrangements.

Artist costs 9.99 USD per month, billed monthly, and allows 32 audio and 64 MIDI tracks. It includes 110+ instruments and effects. This is the sensible starting paid tier for music projects that outgrow Intro; it does not include the video-track workflow that distinguishes Studio and Ultimate.

Studio costs 34.99 USD per month, billed monthly, and raises capacity to 512 audio and 1,024 MIDI tracks. It includes 130+ instruments and effects, immersive mixing and one video track. The price increase is justified for larger sessions, immersive work or basic scoring, but projects needing extensive video editing should look to Ultimate.

Ultimate costs 99.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It supports 2,048 audio tracks, 1,024 MIDI tracks and 64 video tracks, with video editing and full audio-post workflows. Its capacity makes it the clear tier for substantial post-production; music producers who do not need those video capabilities may be paying for headroom they will not use.

Annual options are also priced at 99 USD for Artist, 299 USD for Studio and 599 USD for Ultimate. Perpetual upgrade plans cost 69 USD, 199 USD and 499 USD respectively; these are upgrade plans for existing perpetual licenses, not a stated way to buy a new perpetual license. Studio Education is 99 USD annually, 9.99 USD annual-paid-monthly or 99 USD for a perpetual upgrade; Ultimate Education is 299 USD for an annual paid-annual subscription. New annual-paid-monthly subscriptions have not been sold since January 1, 2023, and existing annual-paid-monthly renewal terms differ from the monthly subscriptions above. Choose an annual or education option only if its billing basis and eligibility fit your situation.

Platforms

Pro Tools runs on macOS and Windows. Avid specifies macOS Tahoe 26.3.x, Sequoia 15.7.x and Sonoma 14.8.x, and Windows 11 versions 25H2 or 24H2. Minimum requirements include 16 GB RAM, 15 GB of free installation space, and an internet connection for installation and activation. Support is available through the community; users with an active support contract, subscription or Avid Support Code can also create a case or call Avid.

Who it's for

Choose Pro Tools if you need a capable recording, editing and mixing environment that can scale from a modest MIDI-based project to high-track-count sessions, or if music production and audio post need to share a workflow. Intro is appropriate for casual creators; Artist suits more developed music sessions; Studio is the practical step for immersive mixing or video-linked work; Ultimate is for extensive audio post. It is less compelling for someone who needs only a lightweight editor or whose work fits comfortably inside Intro’s track caps.

Pros and cons

Pro: High track ceilings on Studio and Ultimate support complex sessions without forcing a move to a different product.
Pro: Studio and Ultimate combine video tracks and timecode with editing tools aimed at frame-accurate post work.
Pro: MIDI, virtual instruments, spatial mixing, third-party plugins and ARA 2 integrations cover a wide range of production needs.
Con: Intro’s 8-track limits can quickly constrain an arrangement that grows beyond casual use.
Con: Studio and Ultimate cost substantially more than Artist, so their extra capacity is worthwhile chiefly when the project needs it.
Con: Installation and activation require an internet connection, and the listed minimum is 16 GB RAM.

Alternatives

For a free, open-source desktop audio editor with no subscription, choose Audacity; Pro Tools is the broader fit when you need its MIDI production and full audio-post workflows. Soundtrap is a freemium option with a free account, limited loops and instruments, a trial, and support across mobile, desktop and web platforms, making it an option when that wider platform coverage matters. GarageBand is free on Mac, iPhone and iPad, with up to 255 tracks on Mac and 32 on iPhone and iPad; it suits someone seeking a free Apple-platform option. Ardour, n-Track Studio, MixPad, WavePad and Riverside are also alternatives to compare.

Verdict

Pro Tools is the right choice for producers and post teams who need one workstation to handle detailed audio sessions, with Studio and Ultimate extending that work to picture. Its strongest reason to buy is the combination of deep editing and scalable music-to-post workflows; its strongest reason to look elsewhere is cost, especially when a free editor or a smaller session is all you need.
