Overview

Flat is notation software for composing, arranging, and sharing musical scores. It is a strong fit for collaborators and educators who want to work across devices, but its free tier’s 15-score limit and Power-only cloud sync shape how far a free account can go.

Key features

Flat brings notation, playback, and live score collaboration together. Multiple users can write, edit, and comment on the same score in real time from different devices, a useful advantage for shared arranging and classroom work. Solo writers who do not need that exchange may find less reason to choose Flat over a simpler notation tool.

It supports tablature, parts extraction, and MusicXML and MIDI import and export. Desktop users can also export PDF, MP3, and WAV. PDF import requires Power or paid credits, which is a drawback for musicians whose workflow starts with existing PDF scores.

Basic includes 30 instruments; Power expands the library to more than 180, including HQ studio instruments, and adds custom instruments, customizable layouts and notation, and advanced playback. Flat supports composing, editing, and playback offline, but cloud sync requires Power. That makes offline work possible without a subscription, while keeping ongoing cross-device access behind the paid plan.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
Flat Basic	Free	Core notation tools, playback, real-time collaboration, MIDI device transcription, 30 instruments, up to 15 scores, MusicXML and MIDI import, and export and printing with Flat branding.
Flat Desktop Free	Free	Free desktop app with up to 15 scores.
Flat Power Monthly	$9.99 per month	Unlimited scores, more than 180 instruments including HQ instruments, MusicXML and MIDI import and export, custom instruments, customizable layouts and notation, advanced playback, and priority support.
Flat Power Yearly	$49.99 per year	Power features, billed annually; Flat states this saves 58% versus monthly billing.
Flat Power Lifetime	Custom pricing	Lifetime option with premium Power features.
Flat for Education	Custom pricing	One-month free trial; integrates with Google for Education, Microsoft Office 365, and Canvas.

Basic is suitable for smaller libraries and shared work that fits within 15 scores, but its instrument selection is narrower and its exports carry Flat branding. Power removes the score ceiling and adds expanded instrument and notation options; the annual plan is substantially cheaper than paying $9.99 each month, but requires annual billing. The Education trial gives schools a month to evaluate the education offering before committing.

Platforms

Flat runs on the web, iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows. The desktop app is free to download and use, with the same 15-score ceiling on its free tier. Offline composing, editing, and playback are supported, while cloud sync requires Power.

Who it's for

Flat is best for musicians, arrangers, and educators who need live collaboration, broad device support, and a path from a small free score library to unlimited scores. It is less suited to users who need to import PDFs without paying or who want cloud sync while staying on the free plan.

Pros and cons

Pros: Real-time editing and comments let collaborators work on one score from different devices.
Pros: MusicXML and MIDI import and export, tablature, parts extraction, and desktop PDF, MP3, and WAV export support varied notation workflows.
Pros: The free plan includes playback and collaboration, and the desktop app costs nothing to download or use.
Cons: Basic stops at 15 scores and 30 instruments, and exports and printing carry Flat branding.
Cons: Cloud sync and PDF import require Power, with PDF import also available through paid credits.

Alternatives

If you want to compare more notation options, browse Music notation software; for tools centered on working together, see Music Collaboration Software.

Choose Fender Notion if you want unlimited staves and full editing capabilities on its free plan, including notation and tablature across web, desktop, and mobile platforms. Dorico is another option, with a free plan and an iOS platform listing.

MuseScore Studio is worth considering if you prefer free, open-source desktop notation software without account or subscription costs. Sibelius is an alternative with a free notation plan and web, macOS, and iOS support.

LilyPond is a free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Noteflight may suit web-only users willing to pay $7.95 per month for Premium, which includes unlimited scores, premium notation and formatting, and 85 instruments. TuxGuitar is a free guitar tablature editor for Android and desktop platforms.

ScoreCloud is a better match if notating from singing is a priority: its free plan allows 10 songs online and watermarked printing, while Plus costs $5.99 per month for unlimited songs.

Verdict

Choose Flat if you need cross-device score collaboration, useful notation formats, and room to grow beyond a small free library. The 15-score cap is manageable for occasional work, but cloud sync behind Power and paid PDF import make it a weaker fit for users who want an unrestricted free workflow.
