Overview

Rosebud turns journal entries into material for reflection, identifying moods, topics, relationships, and patterns. That can make it more useful than a simple archive for people trying to notice themes over time, though the AI features are subject to a weekly usage limit.

Rosebud also offers a considered privacy approach: it says data is encrypted in transit and at rest, production access is restricted and audit-logged, and authentication requires coordinated controls with two-factor authentication. Content sent to AI providers is anonymized, covered by Business Associate Agreements and Zero Data Retention agreements, and discarded after processing. Users can request account deletion, but journal data may remain in Google Firestore backups for up to 30 days before permanent removal.

This is a journaling and self-reflection tool, including for processing emotions between therapy sessions. It is not a substitute for professional mental health care, therapy, medical advice, diagnosis, or crisis support.

Key features

Entry reflection extracts moods, topics, relationships, and patterns, giving users a way to look for themes beyond individual entries. On the web app, Dig Deeper offers Interactive mode, which asks a follow-up question, and Focused mode, which presents three questions to choose from. These options offer structure when a user wants to explore an entry, but reaching the weekly AI limit blocks Dig Deeper until the quota resets or the user upgrades. Writing entries remains possible.

Bloom subscribers get long-term memory automatically enabled, so Rosebud can recall information from previous entries. Voice journaling supports speech-to-text transcription and text-to-speech playback, useful for people who would rather speak than type or revisit entries by listening.

The mobile app adds custom journals, editable daily check-ins, photo attachments, handwritten-journal scanning, AI model selection, and app-language controls. These mobile-specific tools make the phone app the stronger choice for varied capture habits; the web app still has the distinct Dig Deeper modes.

Rosebud supports basic export formats and a privacy lock. Those are practical safeguards for a personal journal, though the export provision is described only as basic rather than as a broad set of formats.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and lets users try Rosebud without a subscription. Its weekly AI usage limit is the important constraint: users can continue writing after hitting it, but cannot use Dig Deeper until reset or upgrade. That makes Free a sensible starting point for occasional reflection, less so for someone who expects frequent AI-guided exploration.

Rosebud Bloom Monthly costs 12.99 USD per month, billed $12.99/mo. Bloom Annual costs 107.99 USD per year, billed $107.99/yr and shown as $8.99/mo, with a stated 30% saving against ~~$155.99/yr~~. Both paid plans are Bloom subscriptions; the annual option suits someone prepared to commit for a year in exchange for the lower stated monthly equivalent, while monthly billing avoids that longer commitment. A 7-day trial is offered. The weekly AI limit is tracked, but no specific quota is given.

Platforms

Rosebud is available on Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows. The mobile apps have several features not described for web, including journal customization, photo attachments, handwritten-journal scanning, and AI model selection, so feature choice may affect which platform is most convenient.

Who it's for

Rosebud fits people who want prompts, voice capture, and AI-assisted reflection in a journal, especially those who value revisiting emotional patterns over time. Bloom is the stronger fit for users who want long-term memory and expect to use the AI regularly. People seeking clinical advice, diagnosis, or crisis support should look elsewhere; Rosebud explicitly does not provide those services.

Pros and cons

Pros: Entry analysis surfaces moods, topics, relationships, and patterns, giving reflective users more ways to revisit their writing.
Pros: Voice journaling, transcription, and playback support speaking entries as well as listening back.
Pros: Mobile-only tools include photo attachments and handwritten-journal scanning, extending the ways users can capture material.
Pros: Rosebud describes encryption, restricted and logged production access, and anonymized AI processing under stated data agreements.
Cons: The weekly AI limit can interrupt deeper exploration, even though writing remains available.
Cons: Some of the most flexible capture tools are mobile-only, while Dig Deeper modes are offered on web.
Cons: Journal data may remain in backups for up to 30 days after account deletion is requested.

Alternatives

For more emphasis on free voice journaling, consider Dayora: its free plan includes unlimited journal entries, voice journaling and transcription, and Reflect chat up to 300 messages, and it has no free trial. Yorishiro is a fit for writers who want unlimited entries and data export on its free Write plan, alongside 10 AI analyses and 3 AI conversations per month. Reflection may suit someone who prioritizes private entries, prompts, reminders, and imports and exports; its Free Forever plan allows one photo per entry and limited syncing.

Stoic is another freemium journaling option with a free plan and a trial, for readers considering guided journals, reflections, exercises, and mood and habit tracking. Mindsera is worth considering for someone who wants a minimal journal, habit tracker, passcode, tags, smart highlights, and data export on its Curious plan. Nuju offers a narrower free starting point—one personal reveal, a quick mood check-in, and three saved entries—so it may fit someone who wants to try a compact format before paying.

Auricle is a potential alternative for readers choosing between free entries with an AI follow-up question and a paid multi-turn AI interview. Inlet may suit someone who wants writing, prompts, aims, and day summaries without a trial clock or card requirement.

Verdict

Rosebud is a strong choice for people who want a private-feeling journal with voice capture, guided reflection, and AI analysis of recurring themes. Its main advantage is the combination of entry-level insights with multiple ways to explore and record reflections; its main drawback is that AI exploration is capped weekly unless the user upgrades. Choose it if that balance fits your journaling routine, but look elsewhere for clinical support or a journaling tool whose defining need is a different set of limits or features.
