Overview

Family Locator is a family-safety app built around live location sharing, messaging and alerts. It suits households coordinating children’s outings and check-ins, as long as everyone consents to share their location. Its free plan offers a broad starting point; pay for premium when unlimited alerts, family-wide history or its extra safety tools matter.

Key features

A shared map and instant messaging combine whereabouts with a way to communicate. Location sharing requires mutual consent, so this is for willing family coordination, not tracking someone without permission. Safe and unsafe zones send notifications when children enter or leave an area; destination notifications and check-in sharing add useful journey updates.

The SOS button immediately sends a child’s exact GPS location, while premium adds automated SOS calls. Lost-phone location can help find a misplaced device. Premium also includes augmented-reality finding, and its In-flight mode uses FlightAware data to show a plane’s location and report departure, landing, delays or cancellation to family. Those extras may suit families who want travel updates alongside everyday location sharing, but they are not necessary for basic check-ins.

Lifetime Premium provides GPS points and movement history from the past seven days, while the subscription premium features include location history for all family members. The privacy policy says movement history is retained for two weeks. The maker says location-based data is encrypted and uses secure transmission protocols; its privacy policy names integrations and data sharing with services including Google, Facebook, Firebase, Braintree and Stripe. The App Store warns that continued background GPS use can dramatically reduce battery life, a practical cost for anyone keeping location sharing active.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is described as having complete functionality, making it a sensible way to start without a recurring bill. The trade-off is that premium is the clearly defined option for unlimited location alerts and location history for all family members; frequent alert users and families who want broader history should compare that distinction with their needs.

Lifetime Premium costs 14.99 USD per once, billed one-time, and includes premium features. It fits those who prefer a single payment over ongoing charges, with seven days of GPS points and movement history. Monthly Premium Subscription costs 19.99 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes premium features; choose it if you want premium access without committing to a one-time purchase. A free trial is offered. The app is for individual, non-commercial use, and its terms prohibit unauthorized tracking or surveillance.

Platforms

The maker says the app is currently supported only on Android and iOS, despite macOS appearing among the platform labels. Families should plan around Android and iOS rather than assume Mac support. Support is available at help@family-locator.com.

Who it's for

Family Locator is best for consenting households that want children’s location, zone notifications, messaging and SOS in one place, with premium options for wider alerts and history. It is a weaker fit for anyone who needs confirmed Mac support, wants to avoid background GPS battery drain, or needs location sharing without every member’s consent.

Pros and cons

Pros: A free plan described as complete functionality offers a no-cost starting point; zone alerts, check-ins, messaging and an immediate SOS location cover several family coordination needs.
Pros: Premium combines unlimited alerts, family-wide history, automated SOS calls, augmented-reality finding and flight updates for families who will use those extras.
Cons: Continued background GPS use can dramatically decrease battery life, according to the App Store warning.
Cons: The maker’s current support statement limits the app to Android and iOS, so macOS users should not count on native support.
Cons: Mutual consent is required, and unauthorized tracking is prohibited; it cannot serve as covert monitoring.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, browse Family Locator Apps. Choose Findmykids if web access matters: it supports Android, iOS and web, and its free Básico plan includes current location, one movement notification and three super-signals. iSharing is another web-capable option; its free plan includes one place alert, the user’s own seven-day history and driving report after watching an ad, plus standard SOS.

BuddySOS may suit households seeking a lower-priced Pro plan: it costs 1.99 USD per month and removes ads while adding more groups and zones; its free plan is limited to one group and one safe zone and includes ads. Consider Family Beacon if you want a free Android-and-web option with live location sharing and SOS while it is in development. Life360 is worth considering for its free plan’s two days of location history, two place alerts, Family Driving Summary and Tile tracking.

FollowMee GPS Tracker is an alternative with Android, iOS, web, Windows and API platform support. GeoFamily is another freemium choice for Android, iOS and web. Choose FamilySeen if defined circle and place caps suit you: its 9.99 USD per month Premium plan supports up to 10 members per circle, up to 20 places and 30 days of location history.

Verdict

Choose Family Locator if your consenting family wants live sharing, zone alerts and immediate child SOS in a free plan, with premium options for unlimited alerts, broader history and travel extras. Look elsewhere if you need Mac support, want to minimize ongoing background GPS use, or need web access across devices.
