Overview

Happy HR is a cloud-based HR platform for Australian businesses that want recruitment and employee-management tools together. It is best suited to employers handling several parts of the employee lifecycle, rather than teams seeking only a lightweight staff handbook.

Its breadth is the draw, but paid HR plans start at a 10-employee minimum, carry GST, and use 12-, 24-, or 36-month subscription terms. Smaller employers can try recruitment free; businesses comparing paid plans should weigh those commitments against the optional payroll and learning costs.

Key features

Employee lifecycle tools

Happy HR covers employee records, time off, onboarding, performance and time tracking, alongside recruitment, safety, training, surveys and asset management. That range can keep routine people-management work in one platform; it is less compelling if a business needs just one narrow HR function. The free recruitment software includes job advertising, candidate matching and talent-pool management, making it a practical way to start with hiring without committing to a paid HR plan.

Support and integrations

Plans include 15 minutes of dedicated HR support each month. That is useful for targeted questions, but a small monthly allowance is not a substitute for ongoing advisory work. Pro adds a dedicated qualified HR consultant, a stronger fit for businesses that want more direct HR guidance. Integrations with accounting, rostering, ERP and other app partners may help connect HR work to adjacent systems.

Payroll and learning add-ons

Payroll and learning are separate purchases, so the headline HR price does not cover every capability. The payroll options range from standard payroll to outsourced processing, while the learning management system includes compliance courses, an AI course builder, learning pathways, skill mapping and reporting. These add-ons broaden the platform, but buyers should include them and any quoted setup costs in their budget.

Pricing

Happy HR uses a freemium model and offers a 30-day trial without requiring a credit card. The free recruitment plan includes job advertising, candidate matching and talent-pool management; the trial requires at least one employee. Free rostering and timesheet management are also included. This is the lowest-commitment option, though it is not a substitute for the paid employee-management plans.

Plan	Price and terms	What it suits
Self-guided	12.00 USD per month, +GST, on a 12-month subscription term; minimum 10 employees	Employers able to manage setup themselves and seeking the paid HR plan without Pro's consultant and setup fee.
Pro	12.00 USD per month, +GST, on a 12-month subscription term; minimum 10 employees; one-time setup fee applies	Businesses that want a dedicated qualified HR consultant and guided setup.
Pro setup fee	Custom pricing	One-time setup covers account configuration, an HR audit, position descriptions, and manager and employee training.

The two paid plans show the same monthly price, but Pro carries a one-time setup fee. The setup price is custom pricing, so buyers should compare the full cost rather than the monthly figure alone. Twenty-four- and 36-month terms are also offered, with longer terms saving more; that saving comes with a longer commitment. Paid pricing lists a minimum of 10 employees, a meaningful barrier for smaller teams.

Payroll and learning are extra. Payroll standard is 4.00 USD per month +GST and includes flexible payroll, employee self-service, timesheets, reporting and ATO electronic lodgements; setup is quoted separately. Payroll + is 6.00 USD per month +GST, adding a pay-conditions engine, compliant awards, rostering and a time-and-attendance kiosk, also with setup quoted separately. Payroll Premium outsourced payroll costs 19.95 USD per month +GST weekly, 14.95 USD per month +GST fortnightly, or 9.95 USD per month +GST monthly; setup is quoted separately. The Learning Management System is 4.00 USD per month +GST and includes compliance courses, an AI course builder, learning pathways, skill mapping, reporting and analytics. The Course Library is 4.00 USD per month +GST.

Platforms

Happy HR is available on the web, Android and iOS, which suits employers and staff who need access from desktop or mobile devices. The platform is cloud-based. Its pricing page states that it is ISO 27001 certified.

Who it's for

Happy HR is a sensible shortlist choice for Australian businesses with at least 10 employees that want recruitment, employee administration and optional payroll or learning under one provider. Pro may suit teams that value a dedicated HR consultant and can absorb a one-time setup charge. Smaller employers, or buyers unwilling to take a multi-year term, should be cautious: the free recruitment offer is useful, but the paid minimum and subscription terms narrow the fit.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad lifecycle coverage spans recruitment, onboarding, performance, safety, training, surveys and assets, reducing the need to assemble those functions separately.
Pros: Free recruitment software and free rostering and timesheet management offer a low-cost entry point for hiring and time administration.
Pros: Web, Android and iOS access supports office and mobile use, while integrations reach accounting, rostering, ERP and other app partners.
Cons: Paid plans require at least 10 employees and a 12-, 24- or 36-month term, making the commitment less suitable for very small or short-term needs.
Cons: GST, separate payroll and learning charges, and quoted setup costs can make the total higher than the base plan price suggests.
Cons: The included HR support is limited to 15 minutes monthly except for Pro's dedicated consultant, so Self-guided buyers should not expect substantial ongoing advice.

Alternatives

For a dedicated employee self-service option with a free tier capped at one employee profile, one company and 10 AI credits, consider HRDocket Employee Self-Service instead; its free offer is much narrower than Happy HR's lifecycle platform. If the priority is paid internal communications and a knowledge hub rather than broad HR administration, Blink is an alternative, with its Core plan at 4.50 USD per month per user.

Applaud HR Case Management is another option, with subscription pricing starting at 500 users and available by contacting the provider.

Verdict

Choose Happy HR if your Australian business has at least 10 employees and wants recruitment and broad employee-lifecycle tools with payroll and learning available as add-ons. Its breadth and mobile access are persuasive, but the multi-year terms, GST, Pro setup fee and extra product costs deserve close scrutiny. Look elsewhere if you need a low-commitment paid plan or only a focused employee self-service tool.
