Overview

Founded in 2012 by professors from Harvard and MIT, edX offers learning content from universities, institutions, 2U, and other partners. Its catalog spans individual courses, professional certificates, executive education, microcredentials, and degrees; edX reports more than 3,500 courses, over 250 content partners, and 100 million learners worldwide.

Courses combine video and text lessons, discussion forums, problems, and assessments. Many are self-paced, and individual courses generally take two to six weeks, though some have deadlines. Across its programs, edX offers flexible, hybrid, fully online, and self-paced formats. That range suits learners who need different levels of structure, but a deadline-bearing course may be a poor fit for someone unable to keep a schedule.

Key features

Audit or verify: Auditing allows free exploration, but limits content, excludes graded assignments and certificates, and ends access to course materials when the course finishes. Verified learners get graded work, a verified certificate, and unlimited access to lectures, readings, and lessons after the course ends. That retained access is useful for review, though it does not remove course deadlines.
Certificates: The university or organization offering a course issues its verified certificate, which includes a link employers can check. This gives learners a verifiable record of completion, rather than just course participation.
Mobile learning: The free Android and iOS app supports enrollment, videos, handouts, announcements, discussions, most assignments, and offline video downloads. Timed or proctored exams must be taken outside the app, so mobile access does not cover every assessment.
Institutional and business tools: edX supports LMS and custom-platform integrations, including SSO and grade pass-back. Business integrations include Blackboard, Canvas, Cornerstone, Moodle, Workday, and LinkedIn Learning Hub, among others; enterprise SSO uses SAML 2.0, and the Enterprise API returns course data in JSON or XML. Institutional tools include analytics dashboards, student portals, and administrative tools. Higher-education subscriptions add SSO, social learning, collaboration, and grade pass-back; enterprise plans include advanced analytics, dedicated support, and tailored integrations.
Accessibility and security: edX aims to conform its website and course-authoring tools to WCAG 2.1 AA and requires timed captions on course videos. Engineers review, triage, and address reported security vulnerabilities.

Pricing

edX is freemium, but individual course and program costs rise substantially with the depth of study. The free audit track is best for exploration; the verified track is the more useful choice when graded work, a certificate, and ongoing material access matter.

Audit track: 0.00 USD per free. It provides limited course access without graded assignments or a certificate, and materials are not retained after the course ends.
Verified track: Starting at around $50. It includes unlimited content access, graded assignments, and a verified certificate. Individual verified courses start at around $50.
Professional Certificate Programs: Starting at $500 per program. These multi-course programs suit learners seeking a broader credential than a single course.
Executive Education Programs: Starting at $2,500 per program. This is a much higher-cost route for executive education.
Starter: 349.00 USD per year, per learner. It offers unlimited catalog access and tools for a classroom or department.
Campus Plan: Custom pricing for institution-wide learning with extended services and features.
Essentials: 150.00 USD per year, per user, for one academy and 16 self-paced courses. Its narrower course and academy scope makes it a more limited option than Teams.
Teams: 396.00 USD per year, per user, for eight academies, more than 2,300 self-paced courses, and more than 300 professional certificates. It includes a 14 day free trial.
Enterprise: Custom pricing for 50+ learners, with eight academies, more than 2,300 self-paced courses, and more than 300 professional certificates. Enterprise subscriptions give employees unlimited access to courses and certificate programs.

For organizations, Starter targets a classroom or department, while Campus Plan is institution-wide and Enterprise starts at 50 learners. The listed individual certificate and executive education prices are starting points, not a single price for every program.

Platforms

edX is available on web, Android, and iOS. The mobile app's offline video downloads help learners study without a live connection, but its exam limitations mean some assessments still require another device or platform.

Who it's for

edX is a strong fit for learners pursuing university-backed study, professional development, or a certificate they can share with an employer. It also suits institutions and employers that need integrations, learning administration, or employee access across a broad catalog. It is less suitable for someone who needs all course material to remain available at no cost, wants a certificate from an audit, or must complete a timed or proctored exam in the mobile app.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free auditing lets learners explore courses before paying, which is useful when deciding whether a subject or teaching format fits.
Pro: Verified access keeps lectures, readings, and lessons available after a course ends, while adding graded assignments and a verifiable certificate.
Pro: The catalog spans short courses, credentials, executive education, and degrees, with self-paced and other formats.
Pro: Business and institutional features include SSO, grade pass-back, analytics, and integrations with leading learning platforms.
Con: Auditing omits graded assignments and certificates and loses material access after the course ends, so it is a limited path to sustained study.
Con: Verified courses start at around $50, while professional certificates start at $500 and executive education at $2,500, making deeper study a substantial purchase.
Con: Timed or proctored exams cannot be taken in the mobile app, despite its support for most assignments and offline videos.
