Overview

DuckStation focuses on playability, speed, and long-term maintainability while emulating PS1 games. Graphics enhancements and flexible play options make it a strong choice for players who want more than a basic route to running their games. It is not a source of games or BIOS files: you need a PS1 or PS2 BIOS image and your own legally purchased, dumped games. The project recommends dumping a BIOS from your own console.

Although its source is available, DuckStation is not open source. Its CC-BY-NC-ND terms prohibit publishing modified versions, a meaningful restriction for anyone looking to adapt or redistribute the software.

Key features

Graphics and enhancements

The hardware renderer supports D3D11, D3D12, OpenGL, Vulkan, and Metal. Upscaling, texture filtering, and 24-bit color offer substantial control over presentation, while PGXP geometry precision, texture replacement, adaptive downsampling, and post-processing shader chains give technically minded players more ways to shape the image. That range is a strength if visual tuning matters to you; it also means DuckStation is better suited to players willing to make choices than those seeking the simplest possible setup.

Saves and play options

Save states, rewind, and runahead provide flexibility beyond ordinary in-game saves. CPU overclocking can be useful for adjusting performance, while multi-disc support, memory card editing, and save importing address library management. RetroAchievements and Discord Rich Presence add integrations for players who want progress tracking or a visible status while playing.

Controllers and game files

DuckStation supports digital and analog controllers, rumble, and up to eight devices through multitap. It can simulate GunCon and Justifier lightguns with a mouse, which gives players without those peripherals another way to use lightgun games. Supported formats include bin/cue, MAME CHD, single-track ECM, MDS/MDF, CCD, and unencrypted PBP. The format range is useful for existing collections, but it does not remove the requirement to provide your own game files.

Pricing

DuckStation is free: its Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free. There is no paid tier to unlock the listed graphics, save, or controller features. The practical cost is the need to provide a compatible BIOS and game files yourself.

Platforms

DuckStation runs on Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows. Desktop builds cover Windows 10 and 11, Linux AppImage, and universal macOS; macOS 13.3 or newer is required. Windows 1809 or newer is required, and Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 are unsupported. The maker provides no support for the Android app and asks users not to email for help with it, so desktop is the more suitable choice if maker assistance matters. Google Play's data safety disclosures say the developer collects no data and shares none with third parties.

Who it's for

DuckStation suits PS1 players who want graphics customization, flexible save tools, broad controller support, and compatibility with multiple game-file formats without paying for the emulator. It is a poor fit if you need the software to include games or a BIOS, expect support for Android, or require an open-source license that permits publishing modified versions.

Pros and cons

Pros: Extensive graphics options, from multiple hardware renderers to upscaling and shader chains, give players considerable control over presentation.
Pros: Save states, rewind, runahead, memory card tools, and multi-disc support make it adaptable to different play and collection needs.
Pros: Free access across Android and major desktop systems lowers the barrier to trying it.
Cons: A user-provided BIOS and game files are essential, so DuckStation is not a ready-to-play package.
Cons: Android users should not expect help from the maker.
Cons: Source-available CC-BY-NC-ND terms do not allow publishing modified versions.

Alternatives

PlayStation Emulators, Game Console Emulators, and Emulator Software are useful starting points for comparing options across those categories.

Avocado is another free option on Android and desktop, but it is in early development and its game compatibility varies.
PCSX-Redux is worth considering if GPL-2.0 licensing matters; it is free and has Windows, Linux, and macOS downloads.
Gamma is the alternative to consider if you need iOS support; it is free to use, though its free version may display ads.
no$psx is a free alternative for Windows.
QuackStation is another free option for Android and desktop systems.
ScePSX is another free option for Android and desktop systems.
HopStation is a free alternative for Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Verdict

Choose DuckStation if you want a free PS1 emulator with unusually broad graphics, save, and controller options across Android and desktop. Its strongest reasons to look elsewhere are the required user-supplied BIOS and games, the lack of Android support, and licensing terms that do not allow publishing modified versions.
