Overview

Dropbox Sign is an electronic-signature service for individuals and businesses that send, sign, and track agreements online. It suits teams that want reusable templates, common business integrations, or a signing API alongside mobile apps. Its free tier and broad workflow options make it a flexible starting point, though the three-request monthly cap and lack of bulk sending matter for higher-volume work.

Key features

Reusable templates preserve prepared fields, reducing repetitive setup when sending the same kind of document. Sequential signing lets signers complete a request in order, while identity verification and an audit trail support accountability around the signing process. These tools suit routine agreement workflows, but the absence of bulk sending makes large batches less convenient.

Dropbox Sign signatures are legally binding under the U.S. ESIGN Act of 2000 and carry the same legal standing as handwritten signatures. The service supports 22 languages for senders and signers. Dropbox Sign says it complies with SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, eIDAS, and GDPR, and encrypts documents at rest using AES 256-bit encryption.

For businesses that want signing inside their own product, embedded signing provides an in-app experience. API access is supported, with official SDKs for Python, Ruby, PHP, Java, NodeJS, and C#; OAuth 2.0 is used to secure API endpoints and user data. Integrations include Google Docs, Drive and Workspace, Microsoft Word and OneDrive, Salesforce, HubSpot, Slack, and Zapier, giving teams several ways to fit signing into existing workflows.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and allows 3 signature requests per month. It is a useful low-volume option, but that cap rules it out for regular sending beyond a few requests.

Essentials costs 15.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes 5 templates with up to 5 users before contacting sales. It fits an individual or small group that needs recurring templates without a larger team setup. Standard costs 25.00 USD per month, billed monthly, includes 15 templates, and starts at 2 users. Its larger template allowance is more suitable for teams with several repeat workflows, though the starting seat count may exceed a solo user’s needs.

Premium has custom pricing for large teams and adds advanced signer tools and advanced reporting. Dropbox Sign also offers a 30-day trial. Email support is available to all users, with a response expected within one working day, Monday through Friday.

Platforms

Dropbox Sign is available on the web, iOS, and Android, with API access for software integrations and embedded signing. Mobile apps let users handle signature workflows from phones, while the API is the more relevant route for businesses integrating signing into their own services.

Who it's for

Dropbox Sign is a good fit for individuals and businesses managing everyday agreement workflows, especially when they need templates, reminders, request tracking, or integrations with common productivity and sales tools. It is less compelling for teams that send documents in bulk or need more than three monthly requests on the free plan. Organizations building signing into a product can make use of its API and embedded option.

Pros and cons

Pros: Templates reduce repeated field setup, and sequential signing supports ordered review.
Pros: API access, embedded signing, and SDKs for six programming languages give product teams multiple integration paths.
Pros: Mobile apps, 22 supported languages, and integrations with major office, CRM, and automation tools serve varied workflows.
Cons: The free plan stops at 3 signature requests per month, limiting its usefulness for ongoing business sending.
Cons: Bulk sending is not available, so high-volume batch workflows may require another service.
Cons: Essentials and Standard are billed monthly at 15.00 USD and 25.00 USD respectively; Premium requires custom pricing.

Alternatives

For another service with a free plan capped at three monthly documents, consider Secured Signing; its listed platform support also includes macOS and Windows. Choose Signeasy if a 10.00 USD per month Personal plan with one user, five monthly contracts sent for signature, and unlimited signing suits your needs better.

Adobe Scan is an alternative for readers looking for a free-to-download scanning app rather than a listed freemium signature service. BoldSign may suit readers seeking a free plan with a stated allowance of 25 envelopes per month and two templates.

Signority API is another option for readers focused on API access, with web, Windows, and self-hosted platforms listed. Consider DocuSign eSignature if you want to compare another freemium e-signature product with a free trial and a Personal plan priced at 11.00 USD per month. Xodo Sign is another freemium option with web and mobile platforms. For an API-based alternative with unlimited documents on its PRO plan, compare DigiSigner.

Verdict

Dropbox Sign is a strong choice for individuals and businesses that want a practical signing workflow with templates, integrations, mobile apps, and an API. Its clearest advantages are the range of ways to fit signing into existing work and the tools for repeat agreements. Look elsewhere if your process depends on bulk sending or if the free monthly request limit is too restrictive.
