Overview

Black Forest Labs, founded in 2024 and headquartered in Freiburg, Germany, positions FLUX for marketing, product visualization, creative production, design, entertainment, and e-commerce. The combination of image and video models, editing endpoints, and several access routes makes it more compelling for teams shaping repeatable creative processes than for someone seeking only a basic image generator.

Use the browser playground, call the API, or deploy downloadable weights on customer infrastructure. API usage includes full commercial rights without a separate license. Open-weight terms differ by model: FLUX.2 [klein] 4B permits free commercial use under Apache 2.0, while FLUX.2 [dev] is non-commercial and has no hosted API endpoint.

Key features

Image and video generation

FLUX.2 generates and edits images up to 4 MP, with multi-reference editing, hex color control, and text rendering. These controls suit product and marketing work that needs visual references or specific colors and text; the 4 MP ceiling may be restrictive when larger output is required. FLUX 3 generates video with synchronized audio from text or images and can extend an existing clip, up to 20 seconds. That makes it relevant to short-form production, but not a solution for longer clips.

Specialized editing and deployment

FLUX Tools cover outpainting, object erasing, virtual try-on, video upscaling, and deblurring. The breadth is useful when a workflow needs more than first-pass generation. Named integrations include Mistral, Magnific, Adobe, Microsoft, Picsart, Gamma, and OpenArt. For teams with infrastructure to manage, downloadable weights offer deployment control; the commercial-use terms must be checked model by model.

The maker identifies ISO 27001:2022 and SOC 2 Type II certifications. Its privacy policy says submitted prompts, uploads, tasks, and outputs may be used to train and improve models, with an email opt-out route. That policy deserves particular attention for confidential creative work. Failed or moderated generations do not consume credits, which avoids billing for those unsuccessful tasks.

Pricing

FLUX uses a freemium model, with hosted image generation priced per output or through monthly-billed model plans. Pay-as-you-go is useful for occasional use; monthly-billed plans suit recurring API workloads. All five monthly-billed FLUX.2 options cap output at 4 MP, and charge for additional megapixels and reference images:

FLUX.2 [klein] 4B: 0.01 USD per month; $0.001/MP for additional megapixels and reference images.
FLUX.2 [klein] 9B: 0.02 USD per month; $0.002/MP for additional megapixels and reference images.
FLUX.2 [pro]: 0.03 USD per month; $0.015/MP for additional megapixels and reference images.
FLUX.2 [flex]: 0.05 USD per month; $0.05 per first and additional MP, and $0.05/MP for reference images.
FLUX.2 [max]: 0.07 USD per month; $0.03/MP for additional megapixels and reference images.

For self-hosting, FLUX.2 [klein] 4B open weights are 0.00 USD per free, with Apache 2.0 licensing and free commercial use. FLUX.2 [dev] open weights are 0.00 USD per free, but are limited to non-commercial use under the FLUX Non-Commercial license and have no hosted API endpoint.

Pay-as-you-go options are 0.01 USD per once for [klein] 4B, 0.02 USD per once for [klein] 9B, 0.03 USD per once for [pro], 0.05 USD per once for [flex], and 0.07 USD per once for [max]. For the 4B plan, the first MP is $0.014, then $0.001 per additional MP and $0.001/MP per reference image; 9B charges $0.015 for the first MP and $0.002 for each additional or reference MP. [Pro] charges $0.03 for the first MP and $0.015 per additional or reference MP; [max] charges $0.07 for the first MP and $0.03 per additional or reference MP. These options cap output at 4 MP and round resolution up to a whole MP. [Flex] charges $0.05 per MP, with no per-image minimum and output resolution billed by MP. The per-MP charges mean larger outputs and multiple references can raise costs above the headline amounts.

Platforms

FLUX supports API, Linux, macOS, web, Windows, and self-hosted use. The mix accommodates browser-based work, integration into software, or deployment on customer infrastructure.

Who it's for

FLUX is a strong fit for marketing, design, e-commerce, and creative-production teams that need image editing alongside generation, or short video generation with synchronized audio. It also suits developers and organizations choosing between hosted API access and self-hosted weights. It is a weaker fit when the work requires output beyond 4 MP or video longer than 20 seconds, or when prompts and uploads cannot be covered by the stated training-use policy.

Pros and cons

Pros: Image generation and editing include reference, color, and text controls, useful for product and brand work.
Pros: API commercial rights are included, and the [klein] 4B open weights allow free commercial self-hosting under Apache 2.0.
Pros: Failed and moderated generations do not consume credits.
Cons: Image output tops out at 4 MP and FLUX 3 clips at 20 seconds, limiting larger-format and longer-form work.
Cons: Open-weight commercial rights vary; [dev] is non-commercial and has no hosted API endpoint.
Cons: Prompts, uploads, tasks, and outputs may be used for model training and improvement unless users opt out by email.

starryai is worth considering for web, macOS, iOS, or Android image generation, with a free plan capped at 25 images daily. Vizcom has a free Starter tier with 800 credits, basic AI creation tools, standard render speeds, unlimited file viewers, and community support. Deep Art Effects is another freemium choice spanning mobile, desktop, web, and API platforms. Deep Dream Generator is web-only and offers free image generation with energy and storage tied to user level. Scenario offers a free tier with 50 daily credits for personal and evaluation use, plus API and web access. Leonardo.Ai has a free plan with 150 fast tokens per day, a 150-token bank, and one personal collection. Mage offers a free tier with a one-time 300 Gems and limited feature access. Playground AI has a free tier with up to 10 images every three hours, three monthly generations across selected models, and two downloads per day.

Verdict

Choose FLUX if your creative workflow needs capable image generation and editing, short synchronized-audio video, and a choice between hosted tools and self-hosted weights. Its most persuasive advantages are that breadth and the commercial API rights. Look elsewhere if you need higher-resolution images, longer clips, or a deployment where the stated prompt and upload training-use policy is unsuitable.
