Overview

Disk Drill is file-recovery software for macOS and Windows, aimed at people trying to retrieve deleted, lost, or damaged files from local, removable, or more specialized storage. Its free edition lets you scan and preview recoverable files; PRO removes the recovery quota, but Windows users should weigh the 100 MB free-recovery ceiling against the paid license terms.

Key features

Disk Drill can scan internal and external drives, SSDs, USB flash drives, SD/CF and other memory cards, digital cameras, virtual disks, RAID arrays, and disk images. It also supports memory-card and RAID recovery, bootable recovery, and file previews, and the product says it can reconstruct more than 400 file types. That breadth makes it relevant beyond a single accidentally deleted document, though recovery options do not guarantee that every file can be restored.

Basic is useful for checking what a scan finds before spending money. On Windows it also allows up to 100 MB of free recovery, a modest allowance for testing a few small files but not a practical answer to a large recovery job. Free protection features include Recovery Vault metadata protection and byte-level backups. PRO adds unlimited data recovery, Quick & Deep Scan, Lost Partition Search, and other recovery methods.

Mac users get scanning for Time Machine backup disks and local snapshots, along with recovery for iOS and Android devices; rooted Android devices are among the supported sources. The Windows comparison also includes NAS and Linux scanning via SSH. Those platform-specific options extend the product’s reach, but they do not change the paid license’s personal-use restriction.

Pricing

Basic — 0.00 USD per free. The free edition scans and previews recoverable files. Windows recovery is capped at 100 MB; it is best for assessing a recovery case or retrieving a small amount of data, not for substantial recovery.

PRO Subscription — 89.00 USD per year. The annual subscription renews automatically unless canceled before renewal. One user can activate it on up to three devices, and the license covers both macOS and Windows. It includes unlimited recovery and future updates while the subscription is active. Cancellation is allowed at any time, with access continuing through the current billing period. This suits a personal user who needs paid recovery now but does not want to commit to a permanent license.

PRO Lifetime License — 149.00 USD per once. This is a one-time purchase for one user and up to three simultaneous activations, with permanent future updates and upgrades. It cannot be canceled. It makes more sense for someone expecting to keep Disk Drill available for occasional recovery over several years than for a one-off job.

Enterprise — custom pricing. Enterprise supports multiple users across company and client computers, commercial use, priority technical support, and forensic data export in DFXML format. It is the appropriate route for organizations; personal PRO is not licensed for money-making use. PRO purchases are non-refundable except where consumer protection laws require a refund. Licenses are personal, non-transferable, and cannot be shared or resold.

Platforms

Disk Drill supports macOS 10.15+ and Windows 10+. PRO covers both operating systems under one license, which is useful for a household with mixed devices, provided the one-user, three-device activation limit fits. The free recovery allowance is specifically stated for Windows; Basic on macOS offers scanning and previews.

Who it's for

Disk Drill is a strong fit for a personal user who wants to inspect recovery prospects before paying, needs support for varied storage including memory cards or RAID, and values one license across Mac and Windows. Windows users with only a small recovery need may get by with Basic. It is a weaker fit for large free recoveries, commercial work under PRO, or anyone who needs a shared license; those users should consider the paid quota, Enterprise, or another tool.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free scanning and previews let users check recoverable files before buying.
Pro: Broad source support spans ordinary drives and cards as well as RAID, virtual disks, cameras, and disk images.
Pro: One PRO license covers macOS and Windows, with up to three activations for one user.
Con: Windows Basic recovery stops at 100 MB, too little for many substantial recovery jobs.
Con: PRO is personal and non-transferable, so it cannot serve as a shared or commercial-use license.
Con: The annual plan renews automatically, while PRO purchases are generally non-refundable.

Verdict

Disk Drill is a sensible choice for personal users who want broad storage coverage, a no-cost scan-and-preview step, and cross-platform PRO recovery under one license. Its strongest case is helping you judge recovery prospects before paying; its clearest cautions are the 100 MB Windows free limit and PRO’s personal-use, non-sharing terms. Choose Basic to inspect a case, then consider the annual or lifetime plan if unlimited recovery fits your needs; look elsewhere for a shared or commercial license.
