Overview

Diigo is a web research library for collecting pages and keeping annotations with them. It is best suited to researchers, students and small teams who need searchable archives and shared sources. Its strength is preserving context around saved links; its main trade-off is that useful quotas and collaboration limits vary sharply by plan.

Key features

Diigo combines bookmarks, pages, notes and pictures in a cloud library with full-text search. It can archive saved webpages and search those copies, which helps when a page changes or disappears. Highlights and sticky notes work while browsing on computers, tablets and mobile devices, making the library more useful for research than a list of URLs alone.

Groups provide shared repositories where members can browse and search material and interact with on-page annotations. That is a meaningful advantage for collaborative research, though the number and size of groups depend on the plan. Social-media bookmarking can automatically save favorite items, and Save by Email captures links and notes sent by email. Diigo can import bookmarks from a browser, Delicious or Pinboard, and export its library and annotated PDF files. Its web services also include an API, blog auto-publishing, tagrolls and linkrolls.

Diigo offers a browser extension, Diigo Browser for iOS, Diigo for Android and Quick Note on Mac. It says it does not record browsing history apart from pages users choose to bookmark to its servers in the United States. It describes its database protections and employee access controls as reasonable, but does not guarantee account security. Diigo also says it meets most WCAG 2.0 standards.

Pricing

The free tiers differ substantially. Free costs $0 and allows 1,000 bookmarks and notes, 200 highlights, 50 screenshots or images, five outliners and one private group with three members. It excludes PDF annotation and limits social-media bookmarking. This suits light personal saving, but the item and highlight caps can constrain an active research library.

Teacher is also free and raises the allowances to unlimited bookmarks and notes, 5,000 highlights, 50 PDF annotations, 1,000 screenshots or images and 20 outliners. It includes one public group with unlimited members and 20 private groups of up to 50 members each. That makes it a strong fit for classroom collaboration, though the PDF and highlight quotas remain finite.

Standard costs $5/month, billed Only $5/month, $40/year. It includes unlimited bookmarks and notes, highlights, cached pages and screenshots or images, plus 100 PDF annotations and 40 outliners. Its group allowance is one public group with unlimited members and three private groups of 10. It removes many personal-library caps, but not the PDF ceiling or small private-team limit.

Professional costs $6/month, billed Only $6/month, $59/year. It adds unlimited PDF annotations, cached pages, screenshots or images, outliners and groups, as well as unlimited social-media bookmarking. For users who save heavily or need flexible collaboration, the modest step up from Standard removes several remaining quotas. The Free and Teacher tiers retain fixed media or annotation limits, while Standard retains limits on PDFs and private groups.

Platforms

Diigo supports Android, iOS, macOS, the web and browser extensions. The mix covers mobile capture and desktop browsing, with Quick Note specifically listed for Mac.

Who it's for

Diigo is a good match for researchers, students, teachers and professionals such as consultants, recruiters, marketers and web designers who need to retain and annotate web sources. Teachers get unusually generous free group capacity; solo users with modest needs can start on Free. It is less compelling for anyone who needs extensive PDF annotation or large private groups without moving to a higher tier.

Pros and cons

Pros: Searchable archived pages, highlights and notes keep research sources and their context together.
Pros: Teacher offers unlimited bookmarks and notes plus 20 private groups at no charge, making classroom sharing practical.
Pros: Import, export, email capture and publishing services offer several ways to move or reuse saved material.
Cons: Free caps bookmarks and notes at 1,000 and highlights at 200, and provides no PDF annotation.
Cons: Standard still caps PDF annotations at 100 and private groups at three, so collaborative or PDF-heavy users may need Professional.
Cons: Diigo does not guarantee account security, despite describing its protections and access controls.
