Overview

Journey is a multimedia journal for people who want to keep writing, recordings, and images together across devices. It suits reflective writers who value privacy controls and guided prompts; its generous platform reach is balanced by membership caps on storage, entries, and attachments.

Key features

Entries, search, and reflection

Entries can include photos, video, audio, GIFs, and music, giving users more ways to preserve an experience than text alone. Search and filters help organize and retrieve entries, and offline access is useful for writing when a connection is unavailable. Coach templates and prompts support reflection, self-improvement, healthy living, and planning; membership adds more than 60 guided coach programs. Odyssey AI can answer questions about a user's own life, patterns, moods, and progress toward goals, a personal reflection tool rather than a general-purpose assistant.

Privacy and sharing

End-to-end encryption protects journal data, while passcode, Touch ID, Face ID, and Android Biometric provide device-level privacy controls. These protections suit private personal records. Shared journals enable collaboration with friends, family, or loved ones, and selected entries can be sent as browser-viewable links. Sharing is useful for people who want a journal to be partly collaborative, but it makes selective sharing an important choice.

Integrations include Google Places, Apple Maps, Apple Health, Zapier, email, and WhatsApp. That breadth can connect journaling with services readers already use, though the practical value depends on which of those services matter to an individual.

Pricing

The free version is available indefinitely, making Journey practical to keep using without committing to a subscription. Membership costs $4.17 per month, billed annually. It unlocks Journey across platforms and includes 10GB of cloud storage, up to 5,000 entries, and up to 20 media files per entry. Those limits should suit many personal journals, but users with large archives or media-heavy entries should account for them before subscribing.

Membership also includes 50 web links, 1,000 cloud prints per month, and 1,000 ePUB/DOCX exports per month. The free tier gives up the membership storage and usage allowances, as well as access to the more than 60 coach programs. A lifetime purchase option is available at custom pricing.

Membership can be cancelled at any time, with access continuing until the next subscription payment is due; cancelled subscriptions are not refunded. EU buyers may withdraw within 14 days unless performance begins with consent.

Platforms

Journey is available on Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, web, Chrome OS, and Linux. That range is a strong fit for people who move between mobile and desktop systems, while membership specifically unlocks use across platforms.

Who it's for

Journey is a strong choice for people who want one journal for text and varied media, plus encryption, privacy locks, offline access, and structured reflection tools. It is less compelling for someone who wants uncapped storage or entries, or who does not need media and coaching features. Its shared journals and web links also make it suitable for selective collaboration, not only private solo journaling.

Pros and cons

Pros: End-to-end encryption is paired with passcode and biometric privacy controls, giving private journal data more than one layer of protection.
Pros: Entries accept photos, video, audio, GIFs, and music, with offline access and search and filters supporting day-to-day use.
Pros: The indefinitely available free version lets users continue without a paid plan; membership spans a broad set of platforms and adds guided programs.
Cons: Membership sets caps at 10GB, 5,000 entries, and 20 media files per entry, which may constrain an extensive or attachment-heavy journal.
Cons: The annual membership price is billed annually, and cancelled subscriptions are not refunded.

Alternatives

Journal Apps and Journaling Software provide broader category comparisons. Consider Rosebud if you want a journal with a free plan and free trial; its Bloom monthly plan is $12.99 per month. Day One is another freemium option, with a one-month in-app trial subject to App Store eligibility. Choose Diarium if unlimited attachments per entry and Word export are priorities in its Pro plan, whose price is custom. Penzu offers a Basic plan with unlimited entries, mobile apps, journal covers and fonts, and writing reminders; its listed plan prices are custom. Stoic is worth considering for additional guided journals, reflections, exercises, and mood and habit tracking through Premium, at custom pricing. Daybook has a free plan with unlimited entries and multi-device sync, while Pro is $3.49 per month. Local Journal is an Android and iOS option with a free plan covering writing, timeline, search, prompts, text export, and light and dark mode. Penso Notes is free on Android and iOS, with themes, Google Drive backup, and PIN lock.

Verdict

Choose Journey if you want a privacy-conscious, cross-platform journal that can hold varied media and support reflection with prompts and coaching. The indefinite free version makes it easy to keep using, and membership's storage and coach programs add useful capacity at $4.17 per month billed annually. Look elsewhere if your archive is likely to exceed its published caps or you prefer a plan without an annual commitment.
