Overview

DeskBox is a Windows app for organizing desktop files into boxes, mapped folders, stacks, and groups. It is best suited to people who want a flexible workspace without moving their files or paying a subscription. The trade-off is a Windows-only product, with some visual effects reduced on Windows 10.

Key features

File boxes support drag-and-drop, renaming, deletion, opening, and locating items in File Explorer. Those familiar Windows actions make boxes useful as working spaces rather than detached views of files. Mapped folders also appear on the desktop while their contents remain in their original locations, which helps organize access without changing the underlying folder structure.

DeskBox can stack similar files manually or automatically, and grouped boxes switch with the mouse wheel or Ctrl+Tab. Saved layouts and multi-monitor support add flexibility for people who arrange work across screens. Cleanup is selective: users can choose individual files, include the public desktop, and resume if a cleanup is interrupted. Built-in boxes cover files, to-dos, notes, and music controls.

User files, to-dos, notes, and cache stay on the computer and are not uploaded to the cloud by default. That suits people who prefer local data handling, but the app is not a cross-device cloud workspace.

Pricing

The 官网直装版 costs 0.00 USD per free, billed 永久免费. All built-in boxes are available without feature restrictions, ads, or subscriptions, so there is no paid tier to unlock core functions. The open-source version is GPL-3.0-only and free for personal use.

The direct installer supports x64 and ARM64 and includes the matching Windows App Runtime for offline installation. Each installer has a same-name .sha256 checksum file. The free edition's principal limits are platform and operating-system support, not a box quota or feature cap.

Platforms

DeskBox runs on Windows 10 version 21H2 or later and Windows 11. Some materials and animations are reduced on Windows 10. The direct installer supports x64 and ARM64; there is no macOS or mobile version.

Who it's for

Choose DeskBox if you want to group desktop files, surface existing folders, and clean up selectively while keeping data local by default. It is less suitable if you need a macOS option, cloud-based sharing, or a consistent full set of visual effects on Windows 10.

Pros and cons

Pros

All built-in boxes are unrestricted and free of ads or subscriptions, so file, note, to-do, and music controls do not require separate upgrades.
Mapped folders preserve their original locations, while boxes retain familiar file operations.
Automatic stacks, grouped-box shortcuts, saved layouts, and multi-monitor support give desktop organization more flexibility than static partitions.
Selective cleanup can include the public desktop and resume after interruption.
Local data handling by default and an offline-capable installer suit users who prefer to keep files on their computer.

Cons

Windows-only support rules it out for Mac users and people seeking a shared cross-platform desktop workflow.
Windows 10 users get reduced materials and animations, so the visual experience is not as complete as on Windows 11.
The maker directs questions and suggestions to a feedback channel and its 大雨实验室 public account, rather than describing a dedicated support plan.
