Overview

DataVeil is an on-premises database-masking tool for testing, development, training, analytics, outsourcing and support. It runs as a Java client with an embedded JDK 21 and connects to databases through JDBC; the client can run on the database host or a network workstation. Supported databases include Microsoft SQL Server 2014 or later, Azure SQL DB and MI, MySQL 5.7 or later, Oracle 12c or later, and PostgreSQL 14 or later.

Masking can be random or deterministic. Deterministic masking can preserve the same replacement values across databases and separate runs, useful when related environments need consistent data. Masks can retain value formats and partial content, helping preserve distributions such as credit-card issuer mix. DataVeil maintains referential integrity for defined foreign keys and supports user-defined dependencies, but it is not an activity-monitoring, access-governance or threat-detection product.

Key features

Built-in discovery algorithms validate suspected identifiers and account numbers, and teams can add regular-expression patterns of their own. This helps identify candidate sensitive fields before masking, though it is not a substitute for governance controls. Users can preview original and masked values side by side before writing changes, a useful check before applying a masking project.

Projects can run from the GUI, command line or batch files. The Community license automatically multi-threads masking and generates PDF masking reports. These options make the free edition practical for repeatable workflows as well as interactive use.

The maker says DataVeil helps with GDPR, HIPAA and PCI compliance. Its privacy policy says technical data is anonymized with a random session number and excludes IP addresses; license data includes IP address and license details for usage verification.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
Community License	0.00 USD per free; license never expires	Databases up to 10GB; free dataset and user SQL masks; premium masks up to 200,000 values per run; discovery reports up to 50 results
Team license	5690.00 USD per year	Annual subscription; example price for one connectivity option and 1 TB of source data; unlimited users and installations; maximum source database size as licensed

Community is the clear starting point for smaller databases and limited discovery needs, with no expiry. Its 10GB database ceiling, 200,000-value premium-mask run limit and 50-result discovery-report cap may constrain larger or more demanding work. Team pricing is capacity-based: the example combines $4,400 per connectivity option and $1,290 per TB of source production data. Technical support and software updates are included. The annual price scales with connectivity and source-data capacity, so teams should match the license to their deployment rather than treat the example as a universal quote.

Platforms

The product specifications list Linux, Unix and Windows desktop and server editions. The client uses an embedded JDK 21 and JDBC connectivity, and can run on the database computer or a network workstation.

Who it's for

DataVeil is a good fit for teams that need to create realistic masked copies of SQL data for development, testing, training, analysis or support while preserving relationships and repeatable values. Community fits smaller database workloads or evaluation; Team suits deployments that need licensed capacity, unlimited users and installations, plus included support and updates. It is not the right choice for buyers seeking activity monitoring, access governance or threat detection.

Pros and cons

Pros: Deterministic masking can keep values consistent across databases and runs, while foreign-key and user-defined dependency support helps preserve usable relationships.
Pros: Discovery, side-by-side preview, PDF reports and GUI or command-line execution cover useful steps from finding candidate data through repeatable runs.
Pros: The Community license never expires and includes multi-threaded execution, but still has meaningful database, run and report caps.
Cons: Community is limited to databases up to 10GB, premium masks of up to 200,000 values per run and discovery reports of up to 50 results.
Cons: Team's annual example price depends on connectivity options and source-data capacity, making it a less straightforward fit for teams with changing or uncertain volumes.
Cons: Data masking is its focus; it does not provide activity monitoring, access governance or threat detection.

Alternatives

For database security and masking category browsing, see Database Security Software and Data Masking Software.

MySQL is a freemium SQL and NoSQL option with replication and high-availability components; choose it when you need a database platform rather than DataVeil's masking workflow.
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Secret Management offers a free service with limits of 5,000 secrets per tenancy and 30 active versions per secret; it is an alternative when secret management, rather than database masking, is the need.
Trellix Data Loss Prevention covers endpoints, email, web, networks and data storage with on-premises or SaaS management; choose it for broader enterprise DLP coverage instead of database masking.
DSGuard has a free self-hosted Community Edition with unlimited datasources, unlimited ShellAI users and no capacity or time limit; it may suit buyers prioritizing those terms over DataVeil's stated database-masking features.
Ubiq Dynamic Data Masking has a private offer with usage-based pricing, where unit count and terms depend on agreed scope; consider it when that pricing model fits better.
DB Audit and Security 360 offers paid auditing modules and licenses, including a $89.00 USD per once additional report viewer license and a $170.00 USD per once SQL Server Performance Auditing Module; choose it when database auditing is the priority.
Redgate SQL Provision prices by total production data volume to provision or mask, with capacity tiers from 1TB to 100TB; it is a relevant alternative for capacity-tiered provisioning or masking.
DBHawk offers SaaS pricing from $40.00 USD per month per user, with a minimum user requirement; consider it when hosted database access is preferable.

Verdict

Choose DataVeil if your team needs repeatable SQL database masking that preserves relationships and can run locally or through command-line automation. The permanent free license makes it approachable for workloads within its caps, while Team adds capacity licensing, unlimited users and installations, support and updates. Look elsewhere if you need security monitoring or governance controls, or if the Community limits and Team's capacity-based annual pricing do not fit your workload.
