Overview

CurseForge is a Minecraft catalog for finding and downloading mods and modpacks, with more than 10,000 projects. It is best suited to players who want one place to browse content across several mod loaders and organize or share a setup. The free catalog does the essential job; Premium is a convenience upgrade for ad removal, direct downloads and desktop personalization.

Key features

The catalog supports Forge, Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt, with game-version filters and dependency information to help narrow projects and check their relationships. Download tracking and mod collections make it more useful for maintaining a larger selection than for someone who only wants to find one mod. These tools help with discovery and organization, but do not establish that every combination will suit a particular setup.

Players can download modpacks and share them as a CurseForge .zip or profile code. Built-in publishing, server tools and API access extend the service beyond browsing; they matter most to people who create, distribute or manage modded setups, not casual browsers.

Premium removes ads across CurseForge platforms and the desktop client, and provides direct downloads without waiting delays. Desktop Premium also includes custom themes and layout customization. Those are practical quality-of-life benefits, but they do not unlock the Minecraft mods themselves, which are described as free.

CurseForge says authors receive 70% of subscription income, and cites more than $18 million paid to creators since 2020 and over $20 million overall. That gives Premium a creator-support rationale alongside its convenience features. The service is part of the Overwolf family.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes free Minecraft mods and modpacks with web catalog access. It is the sensible starting point for players who can tolerate ads and download delays, and who do not need Premium desktop features.

Premium is offered monthly at $2.99 per month or annually at $30.00 billed annually, advertised as saving 16% against monthly billing. Both options include ad-free access, direct downloads, and Premium web and desktop access. The annual rate suits users confident they will keep using Premium; monthly billing costs more over a year but avoids committing to an annual term.

Subscribers can cancel at any time and retain access through the end of the billing cycle. Once Premium access ends, the account reverts to free membership. Refunds are generally not offered, though exceptions are considered individually, so cancellation should not be treated as a refund route. Tebex processes Premium subscription payments.

Platforms

The catalog is available on the web, while Premium access spans the web and desktop client. The desktop client runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Players who only need the web catalog can stay with Free; desktop customization is part of the paid tier.

Who it's for

CurseForge is a strong fit for Minecraft players who want a broad catalog, filters for supported loaders and game versions, and tools to collect, track or share content. It is also useful to creators and server managers who can make use of publishing and server tools. It is less compelling for someone who only wants an ad-free experience if direct downloads and desktop customization hold little value, since the underlying mods remain free to access.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free mods and modpacks keep the core catalog accessible without a subscription.
Pros: Four supported loaders, version filters and dependency information help users narrow and assess projects.
Pros: Collections, tracking, export and profile-code sharing support organizing and distributing modpack setups.
Cons: Free users do not get Premium's ad removal or direct downloads without waiting delays.
Cons: Premium refunds are generally not offered, making the annual commitment a less flexible choice despite cancellation being allowed.

Alternatives

Modrinth is another freemium option, with web, desktop and API availability and a Modrinth+ plan at 4.99 USD per month for ad-free browsing, creator support and a profile badge. Consider it if those paid benefits and its wider stated platform coverage better suit your preferences.

ModDex is free and web/API based; choose it if you want a free service whose account tools include rating, reviews, voting, library management, stacks, project follows and notifications.

FreeMinecraftMods offers a public workflow with no build cap, and generation and export do not require a plan. It may suit users focused on that workflow, though saving and publishing require sign-in.

MineSpecs is a free, browser-based option with no account or sign-in, no ads, and tools and downloads; it suits readers who prioritize those conditions.

MC百科, GameBanana, Minecraft Inside and NetherChest are also free web options. For broader category browsing, see Minecraft Mod Browsers, Game Mod Managers or Game Mod Repositories. Readers seeking a particular kind of Minecraft content can also browse Minecraft Minimap Mods, Minecraft Schematic Tools or Minecraft Resource Packs.

Verdict

Choose CurseForge if you want a free, substantial Minecraft catalog with loader and version filters, plus useful ways to collect and share modpacks. Premium makes sense for regular users who value ad-free browsing, direct downloads and desktop customization. If those conveniences are not worth a recurring charge—and refunds are generally unavailable—the free membership remains the stronger choice.
