Overview

Consensus is an academic search and AI research workspace for finding and interpreting scientific papers. It is best suited to students, researchers and clinicians who need to trace answers back to scholarly sources. Its combination of broad paper search, specialized medical coverage and reference-manager support makes it a focused research tool, though its AI features are capped on the free plan.

Founded in 2021 and headquartered in San Francisco, Consensus searches more than 220 million peer-reviewed papers, with the database updated weekly. Research groups, labs and academic departments can also choose team plans.

Key features

Search and medical coverage

Filters for date, open access, citations, journal rank, study design, population, sample size, duration, publisher, field and country help narrow a large body of literature to papers relevant to a particular question. That breadth is valuable for structured searches; readers who want general-purpose web answers may prefer a broader search tool.

Medical Mode searches a curated collection of about 8 million papers and 50,000 clinical guidelines from the top 1,000 medical journals. That makes it a better fit for medically focused literature discovery than an undifferentiated search across disciplines, while the mode's defined scope is not a substitute for searching the full database when a question crosses fields.

Research Agent and citations

Research Agent plans multi-step searches and can chain citation crawling and DOI lookup before returning citation-backed answers grounded in peer-reviewed research. Consensus says each citation in its AI summaries maps to an exact quote, identifies the source section and highlights PDF text when available. This traceability is a meaningful advantage when checking an answer against its paper, although the answer still benefits from review of the underlying work.

Reference and AI workflows

Users can import a Zotero library and export CSV or RIS files for reference managers including EndNote, Mendeley and Zotero. Consensus is also available within ChatGPT, Claude and Microsoft 365 Copilot. These connections suit researchers who already organize papers or work in those assistants; API and MCP usage draws from the same monthly allowance rather than a separate pool.

Consensus says content sent for AI processing is not used to train its own or third-party models, and account identifiers are not attached to that content. Support is available through in-product Support Chat and at support@consensus.app.

Pricing

The Free Tier costs 0.00 USD per free. It includes unlimited Papers searches, limited Pro messages, 3 Deep reviews/month, 10 Study Snapshots/month and 30 API & MCP calls/month. It is a useful way to search papers without a search quota, but the restricted AI messages and small monthly research and API allowances constrain sustained use.

Pro costs 20.00 USD per month, or $144/year billed annually (equivalent to $12/month). It adds unlimited Pro messages, 15 Deep reviews/month, unlimited Study Snapshots and 250 API & MCP calls/month, alongside unlimited Papers searches. This is the more suitable individual plan for regular AI-assisted work that does not require a high volume of Deep reviews.

Deep costs 65.00 USD per month, or $540/year billed annually (equivalent to $45/month). It keeps unlimited searches, Pro messages and Study Snapshots, raises the allowance to 200 Deep reviews/month and provides 1,000 API & MCP calls/month. The higher tier is for intensive research workloads; occasional users may not need the much larger review and call allowances.

Teams has custom pricing depending on team size. It includes Pro features, 50 Deep reviews per user/month, discounts up to 200 seats, centralized billing and 250 API & MCP calls per team member/month. Enterprise requires a custom quote by email for organizations with over 200 users; it adds Team features, library integrations and product training, with 250 API & MCP calls per user/month. Paid plans can enable additional API or MCP calls for $0.05 each, up to their plan limit.

Platforms

Consensus is available on web, Android and iOS, with an extension and API access. Mobile apps suit reading or searching away from a desktop, while the extension and API support other research workflows.

Who it's for

Consensus is a strong fit for students and researchers who want peer-reviewed literature search with filters, citation-grounded AI answers and ways to move references into established managers. Clinicians may find Medical Mode's curated papers and guidelines especially relevant. Teams that need shared billing or centralized administration can consider its group plans. It is less compelling for readers who need only occasional AI help: the free tier limits those tools, while the paid tiers are organized around substantial review and API allowances.

Pros and cons

Pros: Unlimited Papers searches on the free plan make the core literature search accessible without a search cap.
Pros: Exact-quote citation mapping, source sections and PDF highlighting when available make AI summaries easier to verify.
Pros: Medical Mode combines a curated paper collection with clinical guidelines for a focused medical search path.
Pros: Zotero import, CSV and RIS exports, and integrations with three major AI assistants support existing research routines.
Cons: Free users have limited Pro messages, only 3 Deep reviews/month and 10 Study Snapshots/month, so AI use is restricted even when search is unlimited.
Cons: API and MCP calls share a monthly pool, which can force trade-offs between direct integrations and other connected use.
Cons: Deep's $65.00 USD per month price is a substantial step up from Pro for users who need more than 15 but not close to 200 Deep reviews monthly.

Alternatives

Choose Elicit if unlimited search across more than 138 million papers, unlimited summaries and unlimited chat with papers on its Basic plan matter more than Consensus's combination of Medical Mode and weekly updated search across over 220 million peer-reviewed papers.

Scholarly is another freemium research option.

SciSpace offers extension, iOS and web access, with a free Basic plan limited to 100 monthly credits; consider it if those platforms and a monthly credit model suit your workflow.

Perplexity is a freemium option with Android, iOS, macOS, web and Windows access; its free plan has limited daily use, while Pro costs 20.00 USD per month.

GPT Researcher offers an open-source, self-hosted option with no GPT Researcher usage limits, though users pay underlying language-model and search-provider costs directly.

Kimi Deep Research has a free monthly allowance measured by token consumption rather than query count.

Gemini Notebook is a freemium web and mobile option; its free plan allows 50 sources, 500,000 words per source and 200 MB per uploaded file.

Scite offers free Connect access to MCP and use in ChatGPT, Claude and more, grounded in 300M+ papers, but that plan does not include Assistant or Search access.

Verdict

Choose Consensus if your work depends on finding peer-reviewed studies, checking AI answers against quoted passages and keeping references moving through research tools. Its free search and focused medical collection make it useful even before upgrading; the main reason to look elsewhere is that regular Deep reviews or higher API and MCP usage require a paid plan, and the larger allowances come at a substantial price.
