Overview

Founded in 2015, CodeSignal combines pre-hire assessments, AI-led and live interviews, learning tools, and skills analytics. Assessments simulate job tasks; AI Interviewer agents adapt questions and return structured evaluations, while Live Tech Interviews pair collaborative coding with communication. For teams wanting a more complete hiring-and-development workflow, that range is a strength. Buyers seeking only a lightweight coding test may not need the wider platform.

Key features

Assessment options cover skills, cognitive, behavioral, and job-fit evaluation, with custom assessments, proctoring, and reporting. AI proctoring and ID verification appear in Build; Pro adds advanced fraud prevention and role-based access controls. These safeguards are useful when remote assessment integrity matters, but the plan distinction is important for teams with stricter requirements.

Skills validation, analytics, and benchmarking can help organizations identify strengths and gaps. Integrations include Greenhouse, Ashby, Workday, Absorb LMS, Docebo, Okta, and Slack, supporting connections across hiring, learning, and identity workflows.

CodeSignal says it is hosted on AWS and undergoes an annual independent SOC 2 examination. Pro lists SSO, SCIM, JIT, audit logs, data-retention controls, and custom security review, DPA, and MSA. Those controls make Pro the relevant tier for enterprise security requirements.

Pricing

CodeSignal is freemium. Individuals can start for free with Cosmo tutoring, personalized skills paths, practice-based learning, bite-sized modules, and a skills profile. Cosmo+ costs 24.99 USD per month and retains the tutor, paths, and practice; the free tier adds modules and a profile, making it the better no-cost starting point.

Build costs 99.00 USD per month when billed monthly and includes five monthly credits, universal and core tech assessments, access to 2,000 questions, AI proctoring, and ID verification. Annual billing is described as 60 credits per year, while the pricing note gives paid plans from $79/mo (annual). Build suits smaller hiring programs, but its credit allowance is a real constraint if assessment volume is high. Build support is weekday 9–5 PT by email.

Grow costs 599.00 USD per month when billed monthly, with 35 monthly credits, go-to-market assessments, sales, customer success, and marketing AI Interviewers, plus basic ATS integrations. It is the clearer fit for teams hiring beyond technical roles; its larger allowance and broader interview coverage come at a substantial monthly step up. Grow support is also weekday 9–5 PT by email.

Pro has custom pricing and custom credits, with all assessments and AI Interviewers, advanced fraud prevention and RBAC, enterprise ATS integrations, a dedicated customer success manager, and quarterly business reviews. Its 24/7/365 email support and security controls favor larger or more demanding programs. Organizations should compare custom credits against expected use before committing.

Platforms

CodeSignal supports Android, iOS, web, and API access. That range covers mobile learning as well as web-based organizational workflows and integrations.

Who it's for

CodeSignal is best suited to organizations that want one platform for assessment, interviewing, and skills development, particularly those evaluating technical candidates alongside sales, customer success, or marketing roles. Individual learners can use the free practice tools without buying an organizational plan. Teams with modest volumes may find Build sufficient; high-volume or enterprise buyers should weigh credit needs, security controls, integrations, and support hours against Grow or Pro.

Pros and cons

Pros: Combines assessments, AI and live interviews, learning, and skills analytics, reducing the need to assemble those capabilities separately.
Pros: Assessment coverage extends beyond coding to cognitive, behavioral, and job-fit types, with custom assessment and proctoring support.
Pros: Free individual learning and a free organizational entry point make it possible to begin without an upfront subscription.
Cons: Build's five monthly credits can limit teams with frequent candidate testing; annual billing provides 60 credits, not an unlimited pool.
Cons: Grow's 599.00 USD monthly price is a significant increase over Build, while Pro requires custom pricing.
Cons: Build and Grow email support is limited to weekday 9–5 PT, which may not suit teams needing round-the-clock help.

Alternatives

For a coding-focused comparison, see Coding Assessment Platforms or Coding Challenge Platforms. Broader hiring needs may suit Talent Assessment Software, Pre-Employment Assessment Software, or Assessment Software.

HackerRank is worth comparing for a paid coding assessment and interview plan: its Starter tier is 165.00 USD per month, billed annually at $1,990, for one user, 120 annual attempts, and $20 per additional attempt. HackerEarth Assessments offers a free tier capped at five test invites, three interview invites, and two admins, a simpler starting point for tightly limited use. Savyre is another alternative.

Hirevoult charges 6.00 USD per assessment for an assessment-only option with proctoring and a hire/no-hire recommendation. CoderScreen has a free forever Basic tier with three monthly live interviews, five monthly assessment invites, and one team member. TalentsAccess offers a free Starter tier with up to 50 assessments per month, coding and MCQ challenges, and basic webcam AI proctoring. MeritTrac CodeTrac is an alternative. TestHike is a paid option with custom quotes based on assessment volume, reviewer seats, and required features.

Verdict

Choose CodeSignal if your organization wants assessments, interviews, and skills development together, with room to serve both technical and broader hiring needs. Its strongest case is breadth paired with structured evaluation and enterprise controls. Look elsewhere if a small credit quota, weekday-only support on lower tiers, or custom enterprise pricing does not fit your operation.
