Overview

Ceph is open-source distributed storage software that unifies object, block, and file storage. It suits organizations with the people and infrastructure to run their own storage clusters. Its breadth is compelling, but operating the hardware and cluster is part of the commitment.

Founded in 2006, Ceph is stewarded by the Ceph Foundation under the Linux Foundation. Its software is free; most of it is dual-licensed under LGPL 2.1 or 3.0, with some bundled components under other free software licenses.

Key features

Ceph brings three storage types into one distributed system, so teams can support varied workloads without choosing separate storage products for each.

Object storage: RGW supports the S3 API and Swift-compatible applications. S3 compatibility, object versioning, lifecycle rules, immutability, and cross-region replication make it relevant to teams that need established object-storage interfaces and controls.
Block storage: RBD provides thin-provisioned disk images, snapshots, writable clones, and asynchronous mirroring to remote Ceph clusters. Its integrations include Kubernetes, QEMU, libvirt, OpenStack, Nomad, and CloudStack. This range suits infrastructure teams with varied virtualization and orchestration environments, but block storage requires a running Ceph cluster.
File storage: CephFS is a POSIX-compliant distributed filesystem with snapshots, quotas, and multi-cluster mirroring. Metadata servers can scale to support higher-throughput workloads, giving teams a shared filesystem option within the same system.
Resilience: Ceph can replicate data across devices, racks, and geographic locations, then redistribute it after hardware or connectivity failures. That helps protect availability, though it also makes cluster design and operations central to the deployment.
Kubernetes: The project recommends Rook to run Ceph in Kubernetes or connect an existing cluster; Ceph CSI can provision block and file volumes.

Ceph runs on commodity hardware selected and managed by the organization. For production, its FAQ recommends at least three monitors, two managers, and three OSDs, with at least 10 Gb/s networking between hosts. That guidance signals a meaningful hardware and planning commitment, not a lightweight storage install.

Installation options include packages, container images, source clones, and tarballs. cephadm requires Python 3, systemd, and Podman or Docker. The project publishes a stable release each year, supports each series for approximately 24 months, and issues point releases every 4 to 6 weeks. Help is directed through documentation, the ceph-users mailing list, community channels, and the bug tracker; suspected vulnerabilities go to a closed security mailing list.

Pricing

Ceph — 0.00 USD per free. The plan is open-source distributed storage software, with no free trial. There is no paid plan described; the cost of operating the cluster remains with the organization, which chooses and manages the commodity hardware. This suits teams that can supply infrastructure and operational expertise, but is a poor fit for those seeking a managed storage service.

Platforms

Ceph supports API, Linux, self-hosted, and Windows environments. Its self-hosted model gives organizations control over hardware and deployment, while also making them responsible for running the cluster. Kubernetes deployments can use Rook.

Who it's for

Ceph is aimed at businesses, cloud providers, universities, research institutions, SMEs, global organizations, startups, and developers. It is best suited to teams that need object, block, and file storage in a shared system and can plan for multi-host infrastructure, networking, and ongoing cluster management. Smaller teams without that operational capacity should look for a simpler fit.

Pros and cons

Pros

One system for object, block, and file storage: useful for organizations supporting several storage workloads.
Broad protection and replication options: replication across devices, racks, and regions helps address failures and geographic resilience needs.
Open-source and free: no software plan charge, with source and deployment options for self-hosted environments.
Established infrastructure integrations: RBD connects with Kubernetes and several virtualization and cloud platforms.

Cons

Cluster ownership is required: teams must choose, provision, and manage commodity hardware rather than rely on a managed service.
Production has substantial baseline requirements: recommended monitor, manager, OSD, and network minimums make deployment planning important.
Operations require suitable expertise: cephadm has system and container-runtime prerequisites, and users are directed to project documentation and community support channels.

Alternatives

Consider these options if Ceph's cluster requirements or storage scope do not match your needs:

MinIO AIStor offers a free single-node plan with a full feature set, as well as a free trial; it may suit readers seeking a single-node deployment rather than Ceph's multi-host cluster model.
SeaweedFS has a free Community support plan for any cluster size, with GitHub issues, discussions, and public documentation but no guaranteed response time. It is worth considering if that support model fits your team.
StarWind Virtual SAN has a free, self-supported plan with functionality limitations; its Linux KVM version may have no limitations. Consider it if that virtualization-oriented option better fits your deployment.
MooseFS offers a free Community plan with one active master and single-parity erasure coding. It may suit teams whose needs fit those stated limits.
Gluster is free and open source for Linux and self-hosted environments; consider it as another free option in that setting.
WEKA Data Platform is available by private offer with contract pricing based on duration and terms, and AWS infrastructure costs are excluded. Consider it if a private-offer purchase model suits your organization.
JuiceFS offers a free self-hosted Community Edition with support through GitHub and Discord; it may fit teams looking for that community-support model.
NetApp ONTAP Select is another option to compare.

Verdict

Choose Ceph if your organization needs a unified, open-source system for object, block, and file storage and has the infrastructure team to operate it. Its breadth, replication capabilities, and free software plan are strong reasons to adopt it. Look elsewhere if you need managed storage or cannot meet the hardware and cluster-management demands.
