Overview

Instead is a web-based AI agent for tax research, planning, preparation, filing, and defense. It is best suited to tax professionals and organizations managing several kinds of returns, as well as individuals with more involved tax needs. A free platform tier makes it possible to start without a platform fee, while Agent work is billed by credit.

Key features

Instead supports individual 1040, C corporation 1120, S corporation 1120-S, partnership 1065, and trust and estate 1041 returns. That breadth suits practices and teams handling multiple entity types better than a workflow limited to individual returns. Estate tax 706, gift tax 709, and exempt organization 990 support are planned, so users who need those filings should not rely on Instead for them yet.

Users choose which workflows to run, and credits are used only when they initiate a task. Instead shows a credit estimate before the workflow starts, giving users a chance to weigh the cost before committing; the estimate is useful for cost control, but pay-per-credit billing still makes usage an important budget variable. Users can review the agent’s work before filing, a meaningful checkpoint for tax preparation.

Instead supports prior-year import and federal and state e-filing, including local filing, and says it is IRS-approved with filing in 48 or more state jurisdictions. Google Drive, OneDrive, and Box have live integrations with two-way sync, version tracking, and automatic folder mapping. These connections can help teams keep tax documents aligned with existing storage. Dropbox, TaxDome, Karbon, Canopy, Xero, QuickBooks Online, Bloomberg Tax, Plaid, and SmartVault are planned integrations, not current options.

The company lists US-based support and 24/7 support, with email responses within 24 business hours. Instead is SOC 2 Type II certified.

Pricing

Instead Platform: 0.00 USD per free. It includes unlimited users, unlimited entities, unlimited e-file and print file, multi-entity support, and collaborators and viewers. This is a substantial no-cost starting point for teams that want the platform and filing capacity without a recurring platform charge. It does not include the Agent work itself.

Instead Agent: custom pricing, billed pay per credit. Credit pricing depends on volume and usage, and credits are valid for 12 months from purchase. The plan covers tax research, document extraction, memos, plans and deliverables, workflows and return preparation; filing is free. With no seat cap stated for the free platform, the central cost question for teams is how much paid workflow activity they expect to run.

Platforms

Instead runs on the web. Its listed integrations with Google Drive, OneDrive, and Box extend document workflows, but the other named connections remain planned.

Who it's for

Instead is a strong candidate for CPA firms, tax preparers, corporate tax teams, family offices, businesses, and high net worth individuals who need support across the return types it handles. Its multi-entity platform and user-controlled workflows are particularly relevant to teams coordinating varied tax work. It is a weaker fit for users who need 706, 709, or 990 returns now, or who prefer a fixed Agent subscription price over usage-based credits.

Pros and cons

Pros: The free platform includes unlimited users and entities, plus e-file and print-file capacity, making it suitable for teams that want broad platform access without a seat-based platform charge.
Pros: Users see a credit estimate before starting a workflow and can review work before filing, supporting cost awareness and a human review step.
Pros: Support spans five major return categories, with federal and state e-filing and prior-year import.
Cons: Agent pricing varies with volume and usage, and credits expire 12 months after purchase, so buyers must forecast work and use credits within the validity period.
Cons: Support for estate tax, gift tax, and exempt organization returns is planned rather than current.
Cons: Several potentially useful practice, accounting, and tax-data integrations are also only planned.
