Overview

Launchy is a keyboard-driven launcher for people who want to open programs and find files without working through menus or folder windows. Its configurable indexing, skins and portable mode make it a flexible free option, though its calculator is basic and its third-party plugins come with a reliability caveat.

Rather than replace every part of a desktop workflow, Launchy gives search and launch a central role: press a hotkey, find an indexed item, and open it. That approach suits users who prefer typing to browsing; it is less compelling for anyone who wants a primarily visual way to navigate their device.

Key features

Search and launch: Launchy indexes start-menu programs and can open documents, project files, folders and bookmarks. Smart search also works with files, websites and programs. This is useful when you know what you want to open but would rather not hunt for its location.
Background hotkey: The launcher stays hidden until summoned. Alt+Space is the default shortcut, with Control+Space used on Linux. That keeps the interface out of the way, but makes the keyboard workflow central to getting value from the app.
Configurable indexing: Add directories and choose file types such as MP3 or JPG, or index all files. This lets users tune what appears in searches, rather than treating every folder as equally relevant.
Skins and plugins: Launchy supports custom skins and offers a gallery of additional ones. Its plugin architecture includes web searches, Firefox bookmarks, calculations, custom commands and other integrations, including PuTTY sessions, Todoist, Windows Live Messenger, power controls and task switching. These extensions broaden its scope, but the sample plugins are made by other developers and Launchy does not guarantee their function or behavior.
Portable mode: Configuration files can be stored in the directory Launchy runs from, so it can be carried on a USB stick. That is useful for keeping settings with a portable copy rather than relying on a fixed installation location.
Bundled calculator: Calcy handles addition, division, subtraction, multiplication and parentheses. It covers straightforward arithmetic, not a broader calculation workflow.

Pricing

Launchy is free to download, with a pay-what-you-want option: 0.00 USD per free, no fixed price, a recommended value of $10 USD, and a suggestion to consider paying $3. There is no required purchase price, so it suits users who want a launcher without a fixed software cost. The free option does not change the limits of the bundled calculator or the caveat around third-party plugins.

Platforms

Launchy is cross-platform, with Android, Linux, macOS and Windows listed as supported platforms. Its hotkey behavior differs on Linux: Control+Space is used there, while Alt+Space is the default elsewhere.

Who it's for

Launchy is a good fit for keyboard-focused users who want a free way to search indexed programs and files, and for anyone who values configurable indexing or USB-stick portability. It is a weaker fit for people who prefer browsing visually, need more than basic arithmetic from a bundled calculator, or depend on third-party plugins behaving consistently.

Pros and cons

Pro: Search spans programs, files, folders, websites and bookmarks, reducing reliance on menus and folder navigation.
Pro: Users can select directories and file types for indexing, making the search catalog adjustable to their needs.
Pro: Portable mode keeps configuration files alongside the running app, which supports use from a USB stick.
Con: The included calculator is limited to four basic operations and parentheses, so it is not a substitute for a more capable calculator.
Con: Plugins are created by other developers and are not guaranteed by Launchy, which makes plugin-dependent workflows less dependable.
Con: Building binary-compatible plugins requires Visual Studio 2005, and the plugin API uses C++ Win32 DLLs with Unicode support and static linking of necessary libraries. That is a substantial technical constraint for prospective plugin developers.

Alternatives

Raycast is worth considering for users who want a freemium launcher with a free tier that includes core features, thousands of extensions, three months of Clipboard History and five Notes. Alfred suits macOS users seeking free app launching and file searching, with a $34.00 USD one-time Single License for one user and two of their own Macs on the current version.

Ueli is another free option for Linux, macOS and Windows users who want a launcher without stated usage limits. Rofi is a free alternative for Linux and macOS users, though its development version has no tarball release. Keypirinha is a Windows-only freeware choice with no nag screen, time limit or ads.

KISS Launcher is the Android-specific choice, and it is GPL-licensed, allowing users to change, package and distribute it subject to sharing changes back. Walker is a free, GPL-3.0-licensed Linux desktop application. Winstep Nexus Dock is a Windows dock alternative with a free personal-use plan and paid licenses for business use and Nexus Ultimate.

Verdict

Choose Launchy if you want a free, configurable keyboard launcher that can search across indexed programs and files, with portable use as an added advantage. Look elsewhere if your workflow depends on a full-featured calculator or on third-party plugins working reliably.
