Overview

Courses span math, coding, data science, science, technology, and AI. That approach makes Brilliant a fit for building understanding through active practice rather than pursuing a formal credential: it offers neither completion certificates nor degree programs.

Koji, a digital tutor built into most courses, guides learners through reasoning step by step. Free accounts get only a limited preview, while Premium unlocks full access. The service requires an internet connection, and lessons cannot be downloaded, so it is a poor choice for offline study or unreliable connectivity.

Key features

Problem-led courses and Koji

Free accounts can access all courses and complete up to two lessons or practice sets per day, in sequence. That is enough to sample subjects or build a small daily routine, but it can slow learners who want to follow a longer study session or move directly to a particular lesson. Premium removes the daily cap, allows jumping to any lesson, removes ads, and gives full Koji access. Those upgrades are most useful to learners who want control over pace or rely on tutor guidance.

Educator tools

Eligible K–12 teachers and their students may receive free Premium access through Brilliant for Educators, subject to application review. The program supports Google Classroom roster syncing and sharing lesson links through Google Classroom or another learning management system. Progress reports track lesson completion, time spent, course progress, and completion dates, but do not provide answer-level correctness or formal grades. That makes the tools useful for monitoring participation and pace, not for grading mastery.

Brilliant says its educator program complies with COPPA, FERPA, and GDPR, and does not sell student data or use it for marketing. It also describes organizational, technical, and administrative safeguards in a written information security program, while noting that internet transmissions cannot be guaranteed completely secure.

Pricing

Brilliant uses a freemium subscription model. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and caps use at two lessons or practice sets per day. It includes access to all courses, but ads, sequential progress, and limited Koji preview make it better for sampling than intensive study.

Individual Premium (annual) costs 20.00 USD per year, billed as one payment; the plan also states “billed $20/month.” It renews annually and can be canceled anytime. It includes unlimited access to all courses, no ads, and one subscription across devices. This is the fit for one learner who wants to study without the free plan’s pace restrictions.

Family Premium (annual) costs 40.00 USD per year, billed as one payment; it also states “billed $40/month.” It renews annually and can be canceled anytime. Six seats and unlimited course access without ads make it the relevant option for a household sharing Premium rather than buying separate individual plans.

Group Annual has custom pricing, includes three seats, and supports groups of 3 to 50 people. Each extra seat costs $10.10/month. It is aimed at larger groups; its per-seat charge matters when planning beyond the included seats.

Platforms

Brilliant is available on Android, iOS, and the web. Mobile apps do not change the offline limitation: an internet connection is required and lessons cannot be downloaded.

Who it's for

Brilliant suits independent learners who want interactive practice across STEM subjects, especially those who benefit from visual models and step-by-step prompts. The free tier is a low-commitment way to explore courses at a measured pace; Premium suits learners who want to progress faster or use Koji fully. Educators may find the free program useful for sharing lessons and tracking completion, but should look elsewhere if they need grades or correctness data. Learners who need offline access or credentials should also choose another service.

Pros and cons

Broad, active course format: Math, coding, data science, science, technology, and AI courses pair problem-solving with visual models and immediate feedback.
A genuinely usable free entry point: Free accounts can access every course, though the two-item daily cap and limited Koji preview constrain sustained study.
Premium removes meaningful friction: Unlimited lessons, free lesson navigation, no ads, and full Koji access support self-paced learning.
Educator reporting is limited: Reports show progress and time spent, not correctness or grades.
No offline mode or credentials: Constant internet access is required, and the service provides neither downloadable lessons nor certificates or degrees.

Alternatives

For a broader shortlist, browse Math Learning Apps, Learning Gamification Software, or MOOC Platforms.

MobyMax is another freemium option with Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows support; its free educator version has limited access compared with licensed features.
GeoGebra is a free-plan, freemium alternative available across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows.
Monster Math offers a free trial and a Premium plan at 59.99 USD per year, billed yearly; consider it if that paid plan suits your needs.
Waggle Math is a paid Android, iOS, and web option; its Grades -1–8 practice license costs 10.00 USD per contact, with final pricing dependent on account and contract details.
ALEKS is a paid alternative without a free plan; its listed individual subscriptions include 19.95 USD per month for one month and 49.95 USD per month for three months.
Prodigy Math is a freemium option whose Core membership costs 58.95 USD per year and includes Math Facts and Arcadia, parent progress tracking, and goals.
MathScore has free topics at every K–8 grade level and a web-only platform; consider it if browser access is sufficient.
Boddle is a freemium Android, iOS, and web alternative with free access and Premium Annual at 4.08 USD per month, billed annually.

Verdict

Choose Brilliant if you want interactive STEM courses, visual models, and guided reasoning, and can study online. Its free plan is a useful sampler, while Premium is the better choice for self-paced progress and full tutor access. Look elsewhere if offline lessons, formal credentials, or graded assessment reports are essential.
