Overview

Boxedwine is an emulator designed to run Windows software by combining a 32-bit version of Wine with emulation of the Linux kernel and CPU. The maker lists support for 16-bit and 32-bit Windows applications, and describes the project as open source under the GNU General Public License v2. Boxedwine is written in C++ with SDL.

It is available for Windows, macOS and Linux, and can also run in a browser through Emscripten, using WebAssembly (WASM) and asm.js. The maker’s overview lists Wine versions from 1.6 through 5.0. A compatibility database, an app and game catalog, and online demos give prospective users ways to review listed software and examples such as AbiWord, Age of Empires and Caesar III.

Key features

Windows application compatibility: Boxedwine is intended for 16-bit and 32-bit Windows applications.
Graphics support: The project repository lists support for software using OpenGL, Direct3D and Vulkan.
Emulated filesystem controls: Command-line options can mount host directories or ZIP files in the emulated filesystem, as well as set screen resolution and scaling.
Web launch configuration: URL parameters can specify a root filesystem, app archive, program, working directory and filesystem overlays. The web build can also be configured by changing properties in boxedwine-shell.js.
Browser file handling: The web build can accept a dropped directory and list executable files. Upload and download behavior depends on a shell-file flag.
Wine version choices: The overview describes support for multiple Wine versions between 1.6 and 5.0.

Browser storage and limitations

By default, the browser build stores data in memory, and changes to d:/ are lost when the tab closes. Dropbox storage is available after configuration and uses an OAuth flow through the dropbox.js library. Local storage is another option, with limits that vary by browser and operating system.

On-demand file loading has a notable constraint: documentation warns that retrieving large files can block the UI thread or potentially crash the emulator. It also requires the server to support range requests.

Pricing

Boxedwine is free. Its listed plan, GPL-licensed Boxedwine, costs 0.00 USD per free. The maker’s site lists no paid plans, and there is no free trial.

Platforms

Boxedwine supports Windows, macOS and Linux desktop platforms, along with a browser-based build. The browser version relies on Emscripten and runs using WASM and asm.js. Its file handling, storage choices and launch configuration are distinct from the desktop command-line options.

Who it's for

Boxedwine may suit people who need to run older 16-bit or 32-bit Windows applications on a supported desktop system or in a browser. Its compatibility database, catalog of 39 listed apps and games, and online demos can help users assess specific titles before choosing it.

It also offers configurable execution for users comfortable with command-line options or web-build settings. Those looking for browser use should consider the temporary default storage, the setup needed for Dropbox, and the documented risks around loading large files.

Pros and cons

Pros

Free and released under GPL v2.
Supports desktop builds for Windows, macOS and Linux, plus a browser build.
Targets both 16-bit and 32-bit Windows applications.
Provides filesystem, resolution and scaling configuration options.
Includes a compatibility database, app and game listings, and online demos.

Cons

Browser data stored in memory is discarded when the tab closes.
Dropbox storage requires configuration, while local storage capacity depends on the browser and operating system.
Loading large files on demand can block the UI thread or potentially crash the emulator, and requires server range-request support.

Alternatives

Readers comparing software in this category can also consider Windows Compatibility Layers and alternatives such as Bottles, PlayOnLinux, Q4Wine, Crosswire, Porting Kit, Wine, Hangover and Weave.

Verdict

Boxedwine is a free, GPL-licensed option for running 16-bit and 32-bit Windows software through an emulator built around Wine and Linux kernel and CPU emulation. Its desktop and browser availability, configurable filesystem and display options, and catalog of titles are useful strengths. The browser build’s storage behavior and large-file loading caveats matter, though, particularly for anyone expecting persistent data or loading substantial files. Checking the compatibility information and demos for the software you need is a sensible way to judge whether Boxedwine fits your use case.
