Overview

Made by Crosstalk Studios, Box connects to an Ableton Live session and analyzes its audio. It is standalone software, not a DAW plugin, so it is designed to work with Live rather than serve as a general mixing tool across different DAWs.

Its toolkit covers session inspection, mix analysis, reference comparison, and arrangement. That makes it a focused option for Live users looking for assistance across several parts of a production workflow; producers using other DAWs should look elsewhere.

Box is freemium, with paid plans from $29.00 USD per month. For more options, see AI Audio Mixing Software.

Key features

Session and mix analysis

Box scans tracks, devices, and routing paths, then offers EQ suggestions by frequency band with explanations. Smart Mix compares tracks against genre targets and proposes EQ, dynamics, and level changes that can be applied with one click. The maker says it offers 16 genre profiles developed using thousands of reference tracks. The practical appeal is a guided starting point tied to the current session; the suggestions are not a reason to skip listening and making your own mix decisions.

Reference and arrangement tools

Box can separate stems from a reference track, map its frequency spectrum, and show ways to narrow the difference from the current mix. Its arrangement tools include a visual drag-to-paint builder, section templates, locators, and clip management. Together, these features make Box more than a mix checker for producers who also want help comparing and organizing a track.

Assistant and privacy

CHARL:E and ERR.L provide natural-language interaction, real-time spectral analysis, and control of an Ableton session. Studio adds AI tool execution, while Pro includes AI chat. Box is designed to analyze sessions locally by default; network-dependent options such as cloud, relay, AI, lookup, or remote-control features may process additional data, and users control whether many optional integrations are enabled. Billing information is handled by payment providers such as Stripe, and Box says it does not store full card numbers on its own servers.

Pricing

Plan	Price	Includes
Free	0.00 USD per free, billed forever	Session scanning, basic mix analysis, stereo field view
Pro	29.00 USD per month	Smart Mix engine, reference comparison, EQ matching, arrangement tools, plugin scanner, AI chat
Studio	49.00 USD per month	Everything in Pro, AI tool execution, batch processing, custom profiles, API access, priority support

The free plan is a sensible way for eligible Live users to try basic session and mix analysis, but it does not include Smart Mix or the expanded reference and arrangement tools. Pro is the meaningful upgrade for producers who want those capabilities; Studio is aimed at users who need batch processing, custom profiles, API access, or priority support. Box's plans are priced per month where paid, and the free plan is billed forever.

Platforms

Box requires macOS 10.15 or later and Ableton Live 11 or 12. It is a standalone application rather than a DAW plugin. The maker says Windows support is coming soon, so Windows users cannot use the current requirements.

Who it's for

Box fits Ableton Live producers on a supported Mac who want analysis and arrangement assistance in one companion app. It is less suitable for producers working in another DAW, or anyone who needs a Windows version now. Those who only need basic scanning can start with Free; the paid tiers make more sense when Smart Mix, reference comparison, arrangement, or Studio's workflow tools matter.

Pros and cons

Pros: Session scanning includes tracks, devices, and routing, with explanatory band-by-band EQ suggestions.
Pros: Smart Mix, reference stem analysis, and arrangement tools cover distinct production tasks beyond basic mix inspection.
Pros: The free plan lasts forever and includes session scanning and basic mix analysis.
Cons: Box requires both macOS 10.15 or later and Ableton Live 11 or 12, excluding other operating systems and DAWs.
Cons: Smart Mix and several of the most substantial tools require a paid plan.
Cons: Optional network-dependent features may process additional session data, which users should weigh when deciding whether to enable them.

Alternatives

StemDesk is worth considering for producers who want a free plan with compressor, gate, and limiter plugins, stem separation, analysis, mix targets, a local AI suite, and multiple export formats; it also supports Linux and Windows as well as macOS.

StemMaster is a paid alternative with a free plan and monthly pricing of 9.99 USD; its monthly license supports up to three machines on Windows and macOS.

TonalBrain offers a 9.00 USD one-time Starter purchase for 50 credits, with one credit per analysis run and up to 24 tracks per run on Mac and Windows.

EZmix 3 is another paid option with a free trial.

FUSER is another paid option with a free trial.

Waves Curves AQ is another paid option with a free trial.

sonible pure:EQ is another paid option with a free trial.

iZotope RX is another paid option for macOS and Windows.

Verdict

Choose Box if you produce in Ableton Live on a supported Mac and want session-aware mix guidance, reference comparison, and arrangement tools together. Its free plan gives basic analysis a low-commitment starting point, but the main breadth sits in the paid tiers. If you use another DAW or need Windows support today, Box is not the right fit.
