Overview

Happo is a visual and accessibility regression testing platform for teams that want to check interface changes in development and CI workflows. It is particularly well suited to teams using component stories or browser automation. The main decision is whether its browser coverage and snapshot allowance match your workflow.

Key features

Happo compares screenshots of component variants across browsers using pixel diffs, with cross-browser capture and an approval workflow. Each snapshot represents one component variant in one browser, and a run usually happens once per CI build. That means the allowance can be consumed quickly when a project covers many variants, browsers, or frequent builds; teams should estimate those needs before choosing a tier.

Accessibility testing is included on every plan, including Free, so teams can keep accessibility checks alongside visual regression work rather than treating them as a paid-tier extra. Framework integrations include Storybook, Playwright, Cypress, and a generic API for custom setups. Repository support covers GitHub, GitHub Enterprise, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps, and GitLab, though GitLab support is experimental, including for self-managed instances.

The Happo CLI auto-detects CI providers such as GitHub Actions, CircleCI, Travis CI, and Azure DevOps. Listed browsers are Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge, and iOS Safari, but access depends on plan. The narrower browser range on lower tiers is a meaningful constraint for teams that need to validate across several engines.

Pricing

Happo has a free plan and a free trial. Free costs 0.00 USD per free, includes 5,000 snapshots per month, Chrome, and visual and accessibility testing, with no credit card or time limit. It is a practical starting point for a small workflow, but when the monthly quota is reached the account pauses until the next cycle or an upgrade.

Starter costs 149.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and provides 50,000 snapshots, Chrome and Firefox, unlimited users and concurrent runs, API access, and accessibility testing. Additional snapshots cost $0.006 each. It fits teams moving beyond the Free cap that can work within two browsers; overages mean the stated allowance is not a hard spending ceiling.

Growth costs 399.00 USD per month, billed monthly. Its 150,000 snapshots and Chrome, Firefox, and Safari coverage add headroom and another browser, while retaining unlimited users and concurrent runs, API access, and accessibility testing. Additional snapshots also cost $0.006 each. This is the more suitable tier for teams whose browser requirements or capture volume outgrow Starter, though Edge and iOS Safari remain outside its browser set.

Pro costs 749.00 USD per month, billed monthly, with annual billing available. It includes 300,000 snapshots, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, iOS Safari, and Microsoft Edge, plus unlimited users and concurrent runs, API access, and accessibility testing. Each additional snapshot costs $0.006. It is the clearest fit for teams needing the broadest listed browser coverage below Enterprise, but large volumes can still add charges.

Enterprise has custom pricing, with annual plans available. It includes 1M+ snapshots, all listed browsers, unlimited users and concurrent runs, API access, and accessibility testing, as well as SSO, SLAs, and enterprise support in US and EU timezones. Those additions suit organizations with higher-volume or enterprise requirements; the custom price requires a separate budget decision.

Platforms

Happo supports Android, iOS, API, and web. Its CI and repository connections make it relevant to teams integrating checks into existing build and code-review workflows rather than using it only as a standalone browser tool.

Who it's for

Happo is a strong candidate for development teams that want visual comparison and accessibility testing in the same workflow, especially those using Storybook, Playwright, or Cypress and already running CI. Free can serve a modest Chrome-only workflow; paid tiers make more sense when browser coverage or monthly capture volume needs to grow. Teams that require a browser excluded from their chosen tier, or cannot tolerate paid overages, should weigh those limits carefully.

Pros and cons

Pro: Accessibility testing is included on every plan, so it does not require a move to a more expensive tier.
Pro: Framework, repository, and CI integrations support several common development setups, with an API for custom integrations.
Pro: Paid plans include unlimited users and concurrent runs, avoiding seat and concurrency caps in those tiers.
Con: Browser availability expands by tier, leaving Free Chrome-only and requiring Pro for iOS Safari and Edge.
Con: Free accounts pause at quota, while paid accounts are charged $0.006 per extra snapshot, so capture growth can interrupt use or increase cost.
Con: GitLab support is experimental, which may make it a less certain choice for teams depending on that integration.

Alternatives

Choose Diffy if a smaller free screenshot allowance is sufficient: its Free Plan provides 500 screenshots per month, two environments, team management, and one month of data retention.

Percy offers a free plan with 5,000 screenshots per month, unlimited users, and unlimited projects; it is worth comparing if those project and user allowances are central to your choice.

SmartUI may suit a light trial workflow, with 2,000 screenshots valid for a lifetime, one month of build history, and limited user seats on Free.

Screenster is another option to compare for teams whose needs align with its free allowance of one user, one concurrent test, and monthly local or cloud run limits.

Chromatic is an alternative with a Starter plan at 179.00 USD per month and testing on Safari, Firefox, and Edge; compare its snapshot terms with Happo's browser and quota tiers.

Frontend Regression Validator is a free, Apache-2.0-licensed option that can run locally or with Docker, making it relevant for teams seeking an open-source approach.

Screenshotbot is another option for teams comparing screenshot-based workflows and its per-screenshot pricing model.

Argos is another visual regression testing alternative to consider.

Verdict

Happo is best for teams that want accessibility and visual regression checks integrated with component and CI workflows, with paid plans offering substantial snapshot allowances and broadening browser coverage. Its main reason to choose another tool is the tiered browser set or usage economics: Free pauses at quota, and paid overages are charged per snapshot.
