Overview

The free resources include more than 1,000 learning items, including over 900 self-paced digital courses. That gives learners a substantial way to explore AWS topics without paying, while learning paths and certification preparation help give study a direction. The focus is AWS, so Skill Builder is a better fit for learners committed to that cloud platform than for those seeking a single catalog across cloud providers.

Subscription courses are accessible only as part of a subscription, and subscriptions do not include live classroom training or AWS Certification exams. That distinction matters: Skill Builder can support preparation, but it is not itself a substitute for taking the certification exam or attending live instruction.

Key features

Practice and exam preparation

Individual subscriptions add AWS Builder Labs, game-based learning, AWS Jam challenges and a no-fee sandbox, alongside exam-preparation courses with guided labs and Official Practice Exams. These options make paid access more compelling for learners who want to apply material and rehearse for an exam rather than just watch courses. The free catalog is the lower-risk starting point, but learners seeking these subscription resources need to pay.

Digital Classroom and team controls

AWS Digital Classroom courses are self-paced training based on classroom courses. They are included with the Individual annual and Team subscriptions, making those plans more suitable than monthly access for learners who specifically want that course format. Teams can assign and track training, while administrators can review course enrollment, labs, AWS Cloud Quest, active users and AWS Jam challenge results. Team learners can use company sign-in when the organization has SSO integration; supported providers include ADFS, Azure AD, Ping and Okta. Organizations also receive a technical account manager for technical support questions.

Team seats are restricted to the purchasing company’s employees and contractors, so the team plan is not a way to provide access to outside learners. On mobile phones and tablets, learners can browse, search and enroll; labs and game-based learning are better suited to a laptop or workstation.

Pricing

Free learning resources: 0.00 USD per free, with 1,000+ learning resources. A sensible first choice for exploring AWS learning, though it does not include the subscription-only courses and practice resources.
Individual monthly subscription: 29.00 USD per month, billed $29 / month. It includes self-paced digital training, exam prep and immersive learning experiences. This is the flexible paid option for an individual who wants labs and exam practice without committing for a year.
Individual annual subscription: 449.00 USD per year, billed $449 / year. It includes the monthly plan content plus AWS Digital Classroom. Choose it if those classroom-based digital courses justify annual access; it costs more upfront than the monthly option.
Team subscription: 449.00 USD per year, billed $449/year per seat, for teams of 5 or more. It adds team administration and AWS Digital Classroom, but AWS Classroom Training is not included. The five-seat minimum and employee-or-contractor seat restriction make it a fit for organizations training their own workforce, not small ad hoc groups or external partners.

Platforms

Skill Builder runs on the web. Mobile devices support browsing, searching and course enrollment, but a laptop or workstation is the better choice for labs and game-based learning.

Who it's for

Choose Skill Builder if AWS is your main learning target, whether you are starting with free self-paced courses, preparing for an AWS certification, or managing structured training for a team. It is less suitable if you need live instruction, the certification exam itself, training seats for people outside your organization, or a broad cloud-provider catalog.

Pros and cons

Pro: The large free catalog lets learners explore AWS training before paying for a subscription.
Pro: Paid individual access combines guided labs, a sandbox, game-based learning and Official Practice Exams, which supports practice as well as study.
Pro: Team reporting and assignment tools give administrators visibility into participation and learning activity.
Con: Live classroom training and AWS Certification exams are outside the subscription, so learners still need other arrangements for those.
Con: Subscription courses are only available while included in a subscription, limiting their usefulness as a one-time purchase.
Con: Team access starts at five seats and is limited to employees and contractors of the purchasing company.

Verdict

AWS Skill Builder is a strong choice for individuals building AWS skills and organizations training their own employees or contractors. Its free catalog makes it easy to begin, while subscriptions add practical labs, exam preparation and, on annual or team plans, Digital Classroom. Look elsewhere if you need live instruction, the certification exam itself, access for external learners, or training across multiple cloud providers.
