Overview

The design toolkit combines auto layouts, components, variables and prototyping with real-time collaboration. Work can stay local and continue without an internet connection, and native .sketch support plus Figma document imports can help when moving existing work into Lunacy.

Icons, illustrations, photos and UI kits are built in, alongside AI tools for image upscaling, background removal, text generation and avatar generation. That breadth makes Lunacy useful for interface and graphic design in one workspace. It is a weaker fit for workflows dependent on third-party integrations: plugins, animation, 3D support and .fig support are among features unlikely to appear soon.

Key features

Design, assets and AI

Reusable components and variables support consistent design work, while auto layouts and prototyping cover layout and interaction planning. Built-in assets can reduce the need to source common visual elements separately. The full graphics subscription specifies upscaling up to 7680 × 7680 px; the Pro plan includes an AI upscaler and background remover, but not the text and avatar generators in its listed benefits.

Offline work and private cloud

Local documents and offline use suit designers who cannot depend on a continuous connection. Enterprise private cloud can be deployed on a company's premises or on a VPS, with access controls, single sign-on, detailed logs, data recovery and administrator-approved updates. On-premises customers manage their server and backups; VPS customers can handle backups themselves or delegate them to Icons8 engineers. That is meaningful control, but it also makes deployment and backup ownership a practical decision rather than a setting to overlook.

Pricing

Lunacy is freemium, with no free trial. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and allows up to 10 cloud documents, 10 document editors/exporters and 30 days of version history. It suits beginners, but the document, editor and history caps make it a limited base for ongoing team work.

The Personal cloud plan costs 4.99 USD per month, billed monthly, and removes cloud-document and editor/exporter limits while adding unlimited viewers, entire version history and deleted-file storage forever. It fits an individual or small workflow needing room beyond the free caps. The Professional team plan also costs 4.99 USD per month, billed monthly; it includes unlimited cloud documents, editors/exporters and viewers, with additional members at $4.99 per user/month and deleted files stored forever. Choose it for a team that needs shared capacity, while accounting for the per-member charge.

The Trial team plan has custom pricing and is capped at 10 team cloud documents, three editors/exporters and three team members, with unlimited viewers and 30 days of version history. It is a restricted team option rather than a substitute for the uncapped Professional plan.

The Full graphics subscription costs 9.99 USD per month, with that price valid when subscribed through the Lunacy app; its listed benefit is image upscaling up to 7680 × 7680 px. Pro costs 11.99 USD per year, billed per user/month and billed yearly. It adds editable vector icons and illustrations, studio-quality photos, AI upscaling and background removal, no attribution or backlink, and unlimited cloud documents, version history and deleted-document storage. Pro is the clearer fit for a solo designer seeking asset and storage benefits; compare its annual term and stated per-user billing carefully against monthly cloud plans.

Enterprise has custom pricing for large corporate teams. It includes a tailored plan, granular access control, priority feature development, a dedicated customer success manager, 24/7 priority support, private cloud on-premises or VPS, and bunker mode. Its value depends on whether those governance, hosting and support needs justify a custom arrangement.

Platforms

Lunacy is available on Linux, macOS, Windows and the web, with self-hosted deployment also supported. Desktop apps and web access give teams multiple ways to work, while self-hosting is an Enterprise deployment choice rather than a general platform substitute.

Who it's for

Beginners can start within the Free plan's modest cloud and history limits; solo designers and teams can move to paid cloud plans as their document and editor needs grow. Lunacy is especially compelling for designers who value local offline work, built-in creative assets or .sketch compatibility. Corporate teams with strict hosting and access requirements may find Enterprise's private cloud controls useful, provided they are prepared to manage or delegate infrastructure and backups.

Look elsewhere if your workflow depends on plugins, animation, 3D tools, .fig files or third-party integrations, or if your team needs broader integration options than Lunacy plans to pursue soon.

Pros and cons

Pro: Local documents and offline mode support work without internet access.
Pro: Built-in icons, illustrations, photos and UI kits sit alongside design and AI tools, keeping common creative resources close to the workflow.
Pro: Private-cloud deployments offer access controls and administrative safeguards for organizations that need more hosting control.
Con: Free users are limited to 10 cloud documents, 10 editors/exporters and 30 days of version history.
Con: Private hosting brings operational responsibility: on-premises customers manage servers and backups, while VPS backup handling remains a customer choice unless delegated.
Con: Teams relying on plugins, animation, 3D, .fig support or third-party integrations may find important gaps.

Alternatives

For a free, open-source vector editor on Linux, macOS or Windows, choose Inkscape; its listed plan is 0.00 USD per free and GPL-licensed. Affinity is another free option for macOS and Windows, combining vector design, pixel photo editing, page layout and export tools with Canva integration.

If you want a freemium vector tool across iOS, macOS and web, consider Vector Ink. For Apple-device use, Amadine offers a free version on iPad and iPhone, though exporting, printing and image tracing require purchase. Linearity Curve is another freemium choice for iOS and macOS; its free plan includes 250 lifetime credits, one basic brand kit and 5GB cloud storage.

Vecteezy is a freemium web service with image and video download plans. Tilda is a freemium web option for building websites, including a free plan for one website. Concepts is a freemium option on Windows, iOS and Android, with a Pro monthly subscription at 4.99 USD per month.

Verdict

Lunacy is a strong choice for solo designers and teams who want collaborative interface and graphic design, built-in assets, offline work and a path to private hosting. Its free tier is capped, and its custom Enterprise deployment shifts real responsibility for infrastructure and backups to the customer. Choose it for that combination of design breadth and control; look elsewhere if integrations, plugins, animation, 3D or .fig support are central to your workflow.
