Overview

melonDS aims to emulate the Nintendo DS quickly and accurately, with a nearly complete CPU, video and audio core and a JIT recompiler. OpenGL rendering, 3D upscaling, joystick support and savestates give desktop players useful flexibility beyond basic game playback. But feature breadth should not be mistaken for uniform maturity: Wi-Fi and DSi emulation are still works in progress, and a specific save format remains unsupported.

DS emulation requires BIOS and firmware files; DSi emulation also needs a DSi NAND image. That makes melonDS a better fit for players who can provide those files than for anyone expecting to start without configuration. It uses raw save files and offers an import function for saves from DeSmuME, DraStic or a flashcard. The special save memory type used by WarioWare DIY and Jam with the Band is not supported.

Key features

Core emulation and rendering: The nearly complete CPU, video and audio core is backed by a JIT recompiler. OpenGL and 3D upscaling provide a sharper rendering option, while the software renderer favors accuracy at a higher CPU cost. OpenGL may be faster, but can be less accurate, so the best choice depends on whether performance or fidelity matters more on a given setup.
Controls and display: Joystick support, microphone and lid controls, plus display positioning, sizing and rotation modes, give players ways to adapt play to desktop hardware and preferences.
Save handling: Savestates add a convenient way to preserve progress, and save import eases migration from several other sources. Players of the two unsupported games should account for the save limitation before relying on melonDS.
Connectivity: Wi-Fi supports local multiplayer and online connectivity in principle, but it remains a work in progress and may fail with some games. Local multiplayer is unstable because of timing requirements and may not work correctly with more than two emulator instances. Direct online connectivity requires libpcap or WinPcap, an Ethernet connection and administrator or superuser privileges; indirect mode avoids Ethernet and elevated permissions.
DSi and add-ons: DLDI support is included, but DSi emulation and GBA slot add-ons are still in progress. DSi is therefore not a sound reason to choose melonDS if you need mature support now.

Pricing

melonDS is free: its sole plan costs 0.00 USD per free. There is no paid tier to unlock additional features, making it an easy choice for desktop players who already have the required BIOS and firmware files. The main cost is practical rather than financial: setup depends on those files, and unfinished features may rule it out for particular games or network needs.

Platforms

Official builds are available for Linux, macOS and Windows, with ARM64 builds for some operating systems. Release downloads display SHA256 checksums alongside their sizes. The software is open source. Although unofficial ports such as Android versions exist, the melonDS team does not develop or support them; port-specific help belongs with their developers.

Who it's for

Choose melonDS if you want a free desktop Nintendo DS emulator with upscaling, savestates, joystick support and flexible display controls, and you can configure the required console files. It is less suitable if DSi emulation, dependable Wi-Fi multiplayer or support for the two named games' special save type is essential. The project's FAQ directs bug reports and feature requests to its GitHub issue tracker or forums.

Pros and cons

Pro: A substantial core and JIT recompiler provide a strong foundation for DS emulation.
Pro: OpenGL, 3D upscaling, savestates and joystick support offer useful desktop options at no cost.
Pro: Save imports from DeSmuME, DraStic and flashcards make it easier to bring existing saves over.
Con: BIOS and firmware files are required for DS emulation, and DSi needs an additional NAND image.
Con: Wi-Fi and local multiplayer have reliability caveats, with direct online play also requiring specific networking setup and elevated permissions.
Con: DSi and GBA slot add-on support are unfinished, and two games' special save type is unsupported.

Alternatives

DeSmuME is another free, open-source desktop option for Nintendo DS and DS Lite emulation; choose it if DSi support is not needed and you prefer that alternative. Pilas-melonDS is a free web option for readers who want to use a browser-based alternative; its maker is José Pilas, a video game developer and influencer. DSperate is a free Linux alternative. WatermelonDS is a free Android alternative. Delta is a free iOS and macOS option with in-app purchases. nds4droid is a free, ad-free Android Nintendo DS emulator. SkyEmu offers free stable builds across desktop, mobile and web platforms, though its DS emulation is beta quality. dasShiny is another free option for Linux, macOS and Windows. Browse more options in Nintendo DS Emulators, Game Console Emulators or Emulator Software.

Verdict

Choose melonDS for free, feature-rich Nintendo DS emulation on a Linux, macOS or Windows desktop, especially if upscaling, configurable display modes and save migration matter to you. Its unfinished DSi and networking features, required console files and narrow save incompatibility are the main reasons to look elsewhere.
