Overview

Algolia is a cloud search service for developers building search into websites and apps. It suits teams that want to tune search relevance as well as retrieve results; its free tier makes it practical to start small, while larger projects need to weigh its index limits and paid-plan terms.

It uses a hybrid of keyword and semantic search, with a REST query interface and cloud deployment. Algolia says average search response time is under 20 milliseconds and that it processes more than 1 billion queries every 5 seconds. Those figures indicate the scale it targets, not a promise of performance for every implementation. Its use cases span retail, manufacturing, media, financial services, ecommerce, site search, and enterprise search.

Key features

Algolia combines retrieval with tools to shape the experience: autocomplete, AI Synonyms, AI Ranking, personalization, merchandising, query categorization, analytics, A/B testing, and a crawler. That breadth is useful for teams that need to refine results and understand search activity, rather than simply add a search box. Vector and faceted search extend the options for matching and narrowing results. NeuralSearch, AI Collections, and Smart Groups are reserved for Elevate, so teams that need those features should expect an annual enterprise contract.

InstantSearch libraries cover JavaScript, React, Vue, Angular, iOS, and Android, and API clients are available for multiple programming languages. Integrations include Shopify, BigCommerce, Adobe, commercetools, Supabase, Salesforce, Segment, and Google Tag Manager. This gives developers several routes into common storefront, product, and analytics setups.

Security controls include encrypted data transmission and data encryption. Algolia's Trust Center lists SOC 2, ISO 27001:2022, ISO 27017, GDPR, CCPA, and BSI Cloud Computing Compliance Criteria Catalogue. Support ranges from community access to 24/7 enterprise-grade response times, with professional services optional.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and requires no credit card. It includes 10K search requests/month, 50K records, 5K recommendation requests/month, and 5K crawls/month. Its 1 GB index and 20-index-per-application caps make it a reasonable starting point for new projects, small online stores, and exploration, but a poor fit once content or index needs grow.

Grow costs 0.50 USD per month, billed Monthly, with no contract required. It includes 10K search requests/month and 100K records; additional records cost $0.40 per 1K after the included 100K. Its 100 GB index and 50-index cap are substantially roomier than Free, but the 10 rules/index and 30 days of analytics retention keep it focused on basic search projects. US, UK, and EU hosting locations are offered.

Grow Plus costs 1.75 USD per month, billed Monthly, with no contract required. It has the same stated request and record allowance and additional-record rate as Grow, while adding 10,000 rules/index, AI Synonyms, AI Ranking, Advanced Personalization, and 90 days of analytics retention. It is the stronger fit for teams actively tuning relevance, though it does not raise the included search-request or record quota over Grow.

Elevate has custom pricing under an Annual contract, with volume-based discounts and custom search-request and record volumes. It adds NeuralSearch, AI Collections, Smart Groups, 99.99% availability, SSO, enhanced SLA access, and enterprise support plans. This is the tier for organizations that need those advanced capabilities and enterprise terms, not small projects looking for a flexible monthly plan.

Platforms

Algolia supports web, iOS, Android, and API use. Its published hosting choices are US, UK, and EU for Grow and Grow Plus, and global for Elevate.

Who it's for

Algolia is best suited to development and product teams building search for commerce, content, or larger digital services, particularly when they need controls for relevance and analytics as well as search delivery. Free can validate a small project without a card; Grow suits modest production needs, and Grow Plus makes more sense when ranking and personalization matter. Teams whose requirements exceed the free caps, or who need advanced enterprise features, should budget for a paid tier. It is less compelling for a project that only needs a small, fixed search index and none of the tuning tools.

Pros and cons

Broad search toolkit: ranking, personalization, analytics, merchandising, and testing let teams manage more than query retrieval.
Low-cost entry: Free has no card requirement, and Grow and Grow Plus are monthly with no contract required.
Useful developer coverage: libraries span web frameworks and mobile platforms, alongside API clients and multiple integrations.
Free-tier ceilings: 1 GB and 20 indices per application can constrain growing catalogs or multi-index projects.
Same base allowance on paid entry tiers: Grow Plus adds substantial tuning features but keeps Grow's stated 10K monthly searches and 100K included records.
Enterprise features require an annual commitment: Elevate's custom volumes and advanced capabilities come with an Annual contract.

Alternatives

For teams comparing adjacent API infrastructure rather than search services, Gravitee API Gateway has a free Apache 2.0 Community Edition; its Planet plan is 2500.00 USD per month. Kong Gateway offers an open-source gateway and a free trial, making it an option when API gateway software is the need. Apigee API hub is available at no additional cost to eligible Apigee organizations in supported regions.

Google Cloud Endpoints has a free usage tier of 1,999,999 API calls and a Standard usage tier priced at 3.00 USD per month; consider it when API-call pricing is the relevant comparison. Jitterbit App Builder offers app and instance-based Standard and Professional plans without per-user fees. WSO2 API Designer offers a 30-Day Trial with API Designer access and 5 Managed Interfaces. Tyk API Management has a Professional plan described as flat-rate, with unlimited API gateways, APIs, and monthly API requests. Boomi offers a 30-day trial and a Pay-As-You-Go plan at 99.00 USD per month plus usage. These products address API management, design, or app building rather than search, so they are alternatives only when that is the project's actual requirement.

Verdict

Choose Algolia if you are building app or site search and want a broad set of relevance tools, developer libraries, and a low-cost way to start. Its main trade-off is capacity and capability: Free is tightly capped, Grow Plus keeps the same basic monthly search and record allowance as Grow, and the most advanced features require an annual Elevate contract.
