Overview

Alfred learns which results a user returns to and prioritizes them, making repeated searches more direct over time. The free app is a focused option for launching apps and finding files. It becomes more distinctive with Powerpack, which adds tools for clipboard history, text expansion, file handling, and custom workflows.

That split works well for Mac users who want to start with a launcher and pay only if they need automation or additional utilities. If all you want is a no-cost launcher, Alfred's free core is capable, but users who need its more advanced tools must buy a license.

Key features

Search, launching, and file actions

Alfred searches files and the web alongside app launching, with results shaped by usage. Powerpack adds navigation through the Mac file system, file previews, and actions to email, move, copy, or reveal items in Finder. These deeper actions suit people who frequently handle files from the keyboard; for simple searches and launches, the free core may be enough.

Clipboard, snippets, and workflows

Powerpack's Clipboard History saves copied text, images, and file paths, while Snippets expand short keywords into saved text. Workflows connect objects to automate tasks and can be triggered by a hotkey, keyword, or a button in Alfred Remote. The maker lists workflows for services and apps including Dash, Twitter, Spotify, and YouTube, and workflows can connect to app APIs. This range rewards users willing to set up their own routines; it is unnecessary overhead for anyone seeking only a basic launcher.

Preferences, privacy, and support

Powerpack can sync preferences between Macs through Dropbox or a similar file-syncing service. Alfred says preferences, usage, and settings stay on the Mac rather than being sent to the maker or third parties. The app runs as a user-level process; lower-level access, such as that needed for text expansion, is isolated in a separate process. Workflows may contact servers or APIs, so their behavior depends on what each workflow connects to.

Help is available through preference help icons, in-app search, the forum, Twitter, and email for license-related or private questions. Running with Crayons Ltd, founded in 2010 by Andrew Pepperrell and Vero Pepperrell, is based in the United Kingdom and Portugal.

Pricing

Alfred uses a freemium model. Alfred core is 0.00 USD per free and includes app launching and file searching. It suits users who do not need Powerpack's added utilities or automation.

Single License costs 34.00 USD per once for one user on two of their own Macs, for the current version. This is the straightforward Powerpack choice for an individual who wants the added features but does not need lifetime free upgrades. Personal Powerpack licenses are for individual use, not team seats.

Mega Supporter costs 59.00 USD per once for one user on their own Macs and includes lifetime free upgrades. It suits someone who expects to keep using Alfred across versions; its higher upfront cost buys ongoing upgrades rather than a broader team license. Both paid plans are one-time purchases, not recurring subscriptions.

Platforms

Alfred's main app is for macOS. Version 5.8.1 requires macOS 10.14 or later and supports 64-bit Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. Although the broader platform listing includes iOS, that refers to Alfred Remote, a companion app for controlling Alfred on a Mac. Its core actions require the Mac and iOS device to share a network, so it is not a standalone iPhone launcher.

Who it's for

Alfred is best suited to Mac users who prefer keyboard-driven app and file access and want the option to build shortcuts, snippets, and workflows. The free core is a sensible starting point for basic launching and search; Powerpack is the better fit for people who will use clipboard history, file actions, or custom automation. Choose something else if you need a Windows or Linux launcher, a multi-user license, or a mobile tool that works independently of a Mac.

Pros and cons

Pros: The free core handles app launching and file search, so basic use does not require a purchase.
Pros: Powerpack combines clipboard history, snippets, workflows, and file actions, giving keyboard-focused users ways to automate repeated tasks.
Pros: Preferences stay on the Mac according to Alfred, with optional syncing through Dropbox or a similar file-syncing service.
Cons: The main app requires macOS 10.14 or later, ruling out Windows and Linux users.
Cons: Clipboard history, snippets, workflows, and expanded file actions require a paid Powerpack license.
Cons: The Single License is limited to one user and two of their own Macs, and Alfred Remote depends on a shared network connection with the Mac.

Alternatives

App Launcher Software is a useful starting point for comparing launchers by category. Consider Raycast if its free plan's core features, thousands of extensions, three months of Clipboard History, and five Notes better match your needs; it is also freemium and supports macOS, Windows, iOS, and other listed platforms. Ueli is a free alternative for someone who wants a launcher across Linux, macOS, or Windows without a paid plan or stated usage limits.

Launchy suits readers looking for a free download with a pay-what-you-want option and broad desktop and Android platform support. Windows-only users can consider Keypirinha, whose freeware has no nag screen, time limit, or ads. Wox is another free option, released under the GPL-3.0 License. Linux users may prefer Walker, a free, open-source Linux desktop application under GPL-3.0. Rofi is free and supports Linux and macOS. Flow Launcher is a free option for Windows.

Verdict

Choose Alfred if you use a compatible Mac, value keyboard-led search, and expect to make practical use of Powerpack's automation or file utilities. The free core is enough for app launching and file search, while the paid licenses add real depth for individual users. Look elsewhere if you need a cross-platform launcher, team licensing, or iOS control that does not depend on a nearby Mac.
