Overview

Ahrefs is a web-based SEO and marketing platform made by Ahrefs, a company founded in 2010 and headquartered in Singapore. Its core tools cover keyword research, rank tracking, site audits, backlink analysis, and competitor research, with API access for programmatic use. The freemium setup includes a free plan for site data and fixes, while paid plans start at $29.00 USD per month.

Ahrefs says its web index contains 170 trillion pages, tracks 41.9 billion keywords, and filters 28.7 billion keywords. Its AhrefsBot crawls 8 billion pages daily. These are figures describing the service’s data infrastructure; what an individual user can do also depends on plan limits for projects, tracked keywords, and crawl credits.

The platform also includes AI assistants and MCP access. Content Explorer helps find web mentions and potential link prospects, while AI Content Helper is designed to improve content. Ahrefs offers native integration, Looker Studio integration, and connections to AI chatbots.

Key features

SEO research and monitoring

Keyword research and competitor research help users investigate search demand and the competitive landscape. Rank tracking monitors selected keywords, while backlink analysis focuses on links pointing to sites. Site Audit checks a site for issues and fixes; crawl allowances and project limits vary by plan.

Content and AI tools

Content Explorer can surface mentions across the web and identify link prospects. AI Content Helper supports content improvement. Ask Ahrefs, an AI feature, is free during beta for Lite+ plans. Separate prompt packages provide defined monthly check allowances and per-check overage rates.

API and team administration

API access supports programmatic use. Enterprise adds SSO, two-factor authentication, and ISO27001 certification, along with access management, audit logs, and unlimited additional users. Multilingual customer support is available five days a week; the stated median first response time is 5:58 minutes.

Who it's for

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad coverage across keyword and competitor research, rank tracking, audits, and backlink analysis.
A free plan provides site data and fixes, with limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access.
API access, AI features, and integrations with Looker Studio and AI chatbots extend its uses.
Enterprise includes security and team administration features, including SSO, two-factor authentication, ISO27001 certification, access management, and audit logs.

Cons

Free access is limited, and the more extensive paid plans cost substantially more than the entry-level Starter price.
Project, tracked-keyword, and crawl-credit allowances are plan-dependent, so users need to match limits to their workload.
Ask Ahrefs is described as a beta feature, and prompt packages carry separate charges.
No trial or refund policy is stated.

Alternatives

For a different mix of SEO tools, consider Semrush, SpyFu, or Moz Pro. Site auditing needs may also lead to Screaming Frog SEO Spider, while Google Search Console is another option for site search data. For content work, compare Frase and Rank Math SEO; DefiniteSEO is another SEO alternative.

Verdict

Ahrefs brings research, rank monitoring, site auditing, backlink analysis, content tools, and API access into one platform. Its free plan can cover limited site-data and fix workflows, while paid subscriptions scale project counts, keyword tracking, and crawl credits. The main decision is whether those limits and the relevant subscription price fit the size of the work; teams that need enterprise access controls or high allowances have a higher-priced plan, and AI prompt tracking may add a separate package cost.
