Overview

Touch Typer pairs typing practice with performance tracking: WPM and accuracy trends, per-key heatmaps, streaks, goals, and milestones sync across devices. These measures make it easier to see which keys need work and maintain a routine, though the service collects typing performance and keystroke data. Users can delete their account and request a data export by email; account and typing data are deleted within 30 days after account deletion, subject to legal retention requirements.

The privacy policy describes HTTPS/TLS, database row-level security, and restricted production access. The service uses Supabase, Sentry, Fathom Analytics, Stripe, and Apple services. Touch Typer is built by individual developer Robert Koch.

Key features

Practice across layouts and code

Drills adapt to QWERTY, Dvorak, or Colemak, making the tutor more useful to people switching layouts than a QWERTY-only routine. Code Mode supports TypeScript, Python, Rust, Go, and more than 40 other languages, with syntax highlighting and indentation. That makes it relevant to developers practicing punctuation and code structure as well as ordinary typing.

Feedback, competition, and coaching

Live 60-second duels report WPM, accuracy, and errors. Friends can join through a shareable link without an account, lowering the barrier to a quick practice session. A leaderboard can be filtered by layout, language, and time window. The Premium AI Coach uses the previous 30 days of practice to build drills around weak keys and explain stalled progress; that targeted feedback is a meaningful upgrade for learners who have stopped improving, but it is not part of the free tier.

Streaks, goals, and challenges provide ways to keep practice regular. Free users can begin without an account and get core tests, stats, streaks, multiple layouts, and real-time PvP.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes core typing tests, stats and streaks, multiple layouts, and real-time PvP. It is a practical starting point for solo learners or friends who mainly want practice and basic progress tracking, but it omits AI coaching, custom drills, AI insights, and weekly streak freezes.

Premium costs 2.99 USD per month, or $2.39/mo billed yearly, and includes everything in Free plus AI Coach, custom drills, AI insights, and weekly streak freezes. The annual billing lowers the monthly equivalent, while monthly billing avoids committing to a year. A 7-day trial is offered. No seat limits or practice quotas are stated.

Platforms

Touch Typer runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Its cross-device analytics sync is useful for people who practice on more than one supported computer.

Who it's for

Choose Touch Typer if you want a desktop typing tutor with layout-aware drills, code practice, progress analytics, and optional competitive sessions. Developers and users learning Dvorak or Colemak get particular value from its adapted drills. Look elsewhere if you need a web or mobile-first tutor, or if storing keystroke and performance data with a service is a deal-breaker.

Pros and cons

Pros: Drills adapt to three layouts, so practice remains relevant beyond QWERTY.
Pros: Code Mode covers 40+ languages and preserves syntax highlighting and indentation, supporting realistic coding practice.
Pros: Free users get real-time PvP and core progress tools, and friends can join duels without accounts.
Cons: AI coaching, custom drills, and AI insights require Premium, limiting personalized guidance on the free plan.
Cons: The service stores keystroke and typing-performance data, which privacy-conscious users may not want to share.

Alternatives

Compare typing tutor software if you want to consider the wider category. TIPP10 is another free-plan tutor for Linux, macOS, Windows, and the web, and may suit readers who want browser access. Klavaro is a free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with downloadable source code and packages for those platforms. Tux Typing is a free cross-platform option developed by a volunteer group focused on software for children.

TypingClub is worth considering for web or iOS access; its individual edition is free, while its school edition costs 120.00 USD per year with a 20-seat minimum. Typing.com is web-only; its free edition includes grade-based lessons, tests, and games, but has ads, 70-day data retention, email-only support, and classroom-level settings. keybr is a free web or self-hosted option released under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0.

Typesy offers a paid, trial-available option across desktop, web, and mobile; its listed Homeschool Family plan is $6.00 USD per year, billed $72 paid yearly, for one parent-teacher admin and two student accounts. Typing Agent is a paid option for schools and districts, with licensing billed per student and tiered by volume.

Verdict

Touch Typer is best for desktop learners who want progress measures, adaptable layout and code practice, and the option to compete with friends. Its capable free tier makes it easy to start, while Premium adds useful targeted coaching. Choose another tutor if you need web or mobile access, or prefer not to entrust a service with keystroke data.
