Overview

Paperpal brings academic research, writing assistance and submission checks into one workspace, rather than concentrating on a single editing task. It is a strong fit for students and researchers working with sources and formal documents; casual users who only need occasional polishing may find its breadth unnecessary.

Key features

Users can upload references and PDFs, ask questions and receive cited findings drawn from more than 300 million verified research articles. Having source exploration alongside writing tools can streamline research workflows, but cited findings still need to be checked against their underlying sources before they inform an argument.

Writing support includes academic suggestions, paraphrasing, tone changes, word reduction, grammar correction, proofreading and citation formatting. Plagiarism and AI-writing checks, reference checks and journal-submission readiness assessments add value for work headed toward review or publication. This scope is more useful to academic writers than to someone seeking only a general-purpose rewriter.

Paperpal offers a Microsoft Word add-in and browser-extension support for Google Docs and Overleaf, including Microsoft Edge support for those browser workflows. Paperpal says it does not use documents, uploads or personal information to train its AI models, and users can delete documents. It also states that data is encrypted in transit with 256-bit encryption and at rest with KMS keys, and that it uses SSAE 18/SOC1-certified data centers. Its stated compliance credentials include GDPR, PECR, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, CSA STAR Level 1, FERPA and ISO/IEC 42001:2023.

Pricing

The Free plan costs $0.00 USD per free. It includes 200 language suggestions, five generative AI uses per day, unlimited citation generation, 7,000 plagiarism-check words per month and five AI-detection scans per day, each up to 1,200 words. Those caps make it useful for trying the workflow or occasional checks, but restrictive for sustained drafting or repeated document review.

Prime is $12/month billed annually, charged as $144 a year, or $25/month billed monthly. It is aimed at regular research and writing needs; the annual option lowers the monthly equivalent but requires an annual commitment, while monthly billing costs more over a year. Pro is $29/month billed annually, charged as $348 a year, or $59/month billed monthly. It is positioned for high-stakes research writing such as journal articles, theses and clinical documents, so it is the more suitable tier for intensive submission work. The plans include a 10,000-word monthly limit; readers should weigh that against their document volume.

For institutions, Paperpal offers shared libraries, access management and institution-wide pricing, with a free trial arranged through sales. A Help Center and hello@paperpal.com are available for support.

Platforms

Paperpal is available on the web and as a browser extension. The Word add-in and browser support for Google Docs and Overleaf let academic writers use it alongside common document workflows rather than moving every task into a separate editor.

Who it's for

Paperpal is best suited to students and researchers who want research assistance, academic editing and integrity checks in the same product. Its submission-focused tools also make it relevant to authors preparing journal articles, theses or clinical documents. Someone who only needs citation generation or occasional paraphrasing may be better served by a narrower option.

Pros and cons

Pro: Research discovery, writing support and submission checks sit together, which suits multi-stage academic work.
Pro: Word, Google Docs and Overleaf support can keep assistance close to established writing workflows.
Pro: The stated document-deletion option and security and privacy commitments address concerns around unpublished work.
Con: The free tier's language, generative AI, plagiarism and detection quotas are limited for frequent use.
Con: The 10,000-word monthly limit may constrain larger or repeated review workloads.

Verdict

Choose Paperpal if academic writing is a regular workflow and you want research discovery, editing and submission checks together. Its strongest case is that academic breadth; look elsewhere if you need only a narrow citation or rewriting tool, or if the free quotas and monthly word limit will not cover your workload.
