StartupDB
StartupDB is a free database of startups, investors, and people, with records of investment relationships and funding rounds.
What StartupDB is
StartupDB is a free database of startups, investors, and people, with records of investment relationships and funding rounds. Company records can include round dates, amounts, investor roles, and source URLs, and each fact links to its source. Data is drawn from reviewed public investor portfolio pages, public news, company and investor websites, and edits by staff, founders, and investors. A read-only MCP server and REST API are available without an account or API key. The MCP server provides six tools to search investors, startups, and people and retrieve individual records; its setup guide covers Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Codex, while other MCP clients can connect over Streamable HTTP. The REST API has GET endpoints for searching and retrieving records, investor portfolios, and company funding activity, with JSON responses. Both interfaces are limited to 120 requests per minute per IP, with no daily cap. StartupDB cautions that its coverage is incomplete, so an absent record does not establish that a round or investor does not exist. Dataset facts and compilation are licensed under CC BY 4.0 for commercial reuse with attribution; third-party logos, photos, and site text are excluded.
Good
- Records link facts to their sources
- Free MCP server and REST API require no account
- API and MCP access have no daily cap
- Dataset facts and compilation allow commercial reuse with attribution
Watch out
- Coverage is incomplete
- Access is limited to 120 requests per minute per IP
Who it suits
StartupDB suits people looking up startup funding and investor relationships, as well as developers who want read-only database access through an API or MCP client.
Verdict
StartupDB combines source-linked records with no-account API and MCP access. Treat its entries as database coverage rather than a complete record of funding activity.
