What rmlint is
rmlint is a free, GPLv3-licensed utility for finding duplicate files and other filesystem waste, then offering candidates for removal. It can identify duplicate directories, nonstripped binaries, broken symbolic links, empty files and directories, and files with broken user or group IDs. Duplicate checks can use several hashes or exact byte-by-byte comparison; optional matching by basename or extension is also available. It scans local paths, mounted volumes, or file lists passed through standard input, and its documentation says it can handle sets containing millions of files. There are numerous output options, and a previous run can be saved so a later scan checks only new files. File previews and automatic selection are available. A Python graphical frontend called Shredder has shipped alongside rmlint since version 2.4.0. It rechecks files before deletion, but its documentation cautions that the interface remains in development and is used at the user's risk. Linux is the project's main target; it also says it runs and compiles on FreeBSD, Darwin, and Solaris, with installation options listed for Linux distributions and macOS.
Good
- Finds duplicates, broken links, empty items, and other waste
- Supports hashes and exact byte comparisons
- Can save a run and scan only new files
- Includes previews and automatic selection
Watch out
- No Recycle Bin or Trash feature
- Shredder is still in development
- The project warns to check deletion candidates
Who it suits
rmlint suits users cleaning up local or mounted filesystems who want several ways to identify redundant or broken items. Linux is its main target, though the project also describes support for macOS and other systems.
Verdict
rmlint covers more than duplicate-file searches, with multiple matching methods and output options. Check proposed deletions carefully, particularly when using Shredder, and note that removed files have no built-in Trash route.
