Summary
Flomesh Service Mesh (FSM) is an open-source service mesh for traffic management and service governance of microservices running on Kubernetes. It uses the Flomesh Pipy proxy, automatically injecting it as a sidecar into applications that are onboarded. FSM supports traffic shifting, ingress and egress, and Kubernetes Gateway API capabilities, as well as HTTP, TCP, gRPC and MQTT traffic. For service security, it enables mutual TLS and fine-grained service access policies. Certificate management can use its Tresor implementation, cert-manager or HashiCorp Vault. Prometheus and Grafana integrations are marked stable in the documentation, while Jaeger distributed tracing is beta. Other integration guides cover Dapr and discovery registries including Consul, Eureka and Nacos. FSM supports x86 and ARM architectures and multi-cluster Kubernetes connectivity through the MCS API, though multicluster is marked alpha. It is self-hosted and free. Installation requires Kubernetes 1.19 or later; listed version 1.1 support covers Kubernetes 1.19 through 1.24.
Who it is for
FSM suits teams running microservices on Kubernetes that need traffic controls, service-to-service security and certificate management. It is aimed at self-hosted deployments and has documented compatibility limits worth checking first.
What is good
- Open-source and free to use.
- Supports HTTP, TCP, gRPC and MQTT traffic.
- Mutual TLS and fine-grained access policies are supported.
- Prometheus and Grafana integrations are stable.
What to know first
- Requires Kubernetes 1.19 or later.
- Jaeger distributed tracing is marked beta.
- Multicluster support is marked alpha.
- ReferenceGrant is unsupported; some Gateway API resources are partial.
Verdict
FSM covers traffic management, service security and several observability and certificate integrations for Kubernetes environments. Check the Kubernetes version requirements and the maturity of multicluster and Gateway API support before adopting it.
